På den tjuefjerde dagen i denne måneden samlet Israels barn seg, fastet, kledde seg i sekk og hadde jord på seg.

Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them.

Og Israels etterkommere skilte seg fra alle fremmede og stod og bekjente sine synder og fedres misgjerninger.

And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.

De reiste seg på sin plass, og leste fra Herrens lovbok en fjerdedel av dagen; og den neste fjerdedelen bekjente de sine synder og tilba Herren sin Gud.

And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the LORD their God o fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the LORD their God.

Så stod Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebanja, Bunni, Sherebja, Bani og Kenani fra levittene på trappen og ropte med høy røst til Herren sin Gud.

Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God.

Da sa levittene, Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabnia, Sherebja, Hodia, Shebanja og Petahja: Reis dere opp og velsign Herren deres Gud for alltid og evig, og velsignet være ditt herlige navn, som er opphøyd over all velsignelse og pris.

Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

Du alene er Herren; du har skapt himmelen, himmelenes himmel med hele deres hær, jorden og alt som er på den, havene og alt som er i dem, og du bevarer dem alle; himmelens hær tilber deg.

Thou, even thou, art LORD alo; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.

Du er Herren Gud, som valgte Abram og førte ham ut fra Ur i Kaldea og ga ham navnet Abraham.

Thou art the LORD the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham;

Du fant hans hjerte trofast for deg og inngikk en pakt med ham om å gi landet til kanaaneerne, hetittene, amorittene, perisittene, jebusittene og girgasittene – for å gi det til hans etterkommere. Du har oppfylt dine ord, for du er rettferdig.

And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous:

Du så våre fedres nød i Egypt og hørte deres rop ved Rødehavet.

And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardest their cry by the Red sea;

Du gjorde tegn og under mot farao og alle hans tjenere og hele hans land, for du visste at de handlet stolt mot dem. Du fikk deg et navn, slik det er i dag.

And shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou kwest that they dealt proudly against them. So didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day.

Du kløvde havet foran dem, så de gikk midt igjennom havet på tørt land; men du kastet deres forfølgere i dypet, som en stein i mektige vann.

And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a sto into the mighty waters.

Du ledet dem om dagen med en skyssøyle, og om natten med en ildsøyle, for å gi dem lys på veien de skulle gå.

Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go.

Du kom også ned på Sinaifjellet og talte med dem fra himmelen, og ga dem rettferdige lover og trofaste bud, gode forskrifter og bud.

Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments:

Du kunngjorde for dem din hellige sabbat, og ga dem bud, forskrifter og lover ved din tjener Moses.

And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant:

Du ga dem brød fra himmelen for deres sult, og brakte vann ut av klippen for deres tørst, og lovet at de skulle gå inn og ta i eie landet du sverget å gi dem.

And gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and promisedst them that they should go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them.

Men de og våre fedre handlet hovmodig, og gjorde sine nakker stive og hørte ikke på dine bud.

But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and harded their cks, and hearked not to thy commandments,

De nektet å lyde, og glemte dine underverker som du hadde gjort blant dem; de gjorde sine nakker stive, og i sitt opprør utnevnte de en leder for å vende tilbake til sitt slaveri. Men du er en Gud som er klar til å tilgi, nådig og barmhjertig, sen til vrede og rik på miskunn, og du forlot dem ikke.

And refused to obey, ither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but harded their cks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindss, and forsookest them not.

Ja, da de laget seg en støpt kalv og sa: 'Dette er din Gud som førte deg opp fra Egypt,' og begikk store ugjerninger,

Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This is thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations;

forlot du dem likevel ikke i ørkenen i din store miskunn. Skyssøylen vek ikke fra dem om dagen for å lede dem på veien, ei heller ildsøylen om natten for å gi dem lys og vise dem veien de skulle gå.

Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderss: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; ither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.

Du ga også din gode ånd for å undervise dem, og holdt ikke ditt manna tilbake fra deres munn, og ga dem vann for deres tørst.

Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.

I førti år sørget du for dem i ørkenen, så de ikke manglet noe; deres klær ble ikke utslitt, og føttene deres hovnet ikke opp.

Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderss, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.

Du ga dem også kongeriker og folk og delte dem inn i distrikter, så de tok i eie landet til Sihon, Hesbons konge, og landet til Og, Basans konge.

Moreover thou gavest them kingdoms and nations, and didst divide them into corrs: so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

Du gjorde også deres barn mange som himmelens stjerner, og førte dem inn i landet, det som du hadde lovet deres fedre at de skulle komme inn og ta i eie.

Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.

Så gikk barna inn og tok landet i eie, og du underla dem dem som bodde i landet, kanaaneerne, og ga dem i deres hender, både deres konger og folkene i landet, så de kunne gjøre med dem som de ville.

So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would.

De inntok befestede byer og et fruktbart land, tok hus fulle av alle gode ting, uthuggede brønner, vingårder, olivenlunder og mengdevis av frukttrær. Så de åt og ble mette, og vokste i velstand ved din store godhet.

And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, wells digged, viyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodss.

Likevel var de ulydige og gjorde opprør mot deg, kastet din lov bak ryggen, drepte dine profeter som vitnet mot dem for å vende dem tilbake til deg, og de begikk store ugjerninger.

vertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations.

Derfor overgav du dem i hendene på deres fiender, som plaget dem. Men i sin nød ropte de til deg, og du hørte dem fra himmelen, og i din store miskunn ga du dem frelsere som frelste dem fra deres fienders hånd.

Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their emies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their emies.

Men så snart de hadde hvile, vendte de tilbake til å gjøre ondt foran deg. Da overlot du dem i fienders hender, så de hersket over dem; men når de vendte tilbake og ropte til deg, hørte du dem fra himmelen; og mange ganger fridde du dem i din miskunn.

But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their emies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returd, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies;

Du vitnet mot dem for å føre dem tilbake til din lov, men de handlet hovmodig og hørte ikke på dine bud, men syndet mot dine rettferdige dommer, som et menneske, hvis han følger dem, vil leve ved; de trakk skuldrene til seg, gjorde sine nakker stive og ville ikke høre.

And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearked not unto thy commandments, but sind against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and harded their ck, and would not hear.

Men du var tålmodig med dem i mange år og vitnet mot dem ved din ånd gjennom dine profeter; men de ville ikke høre. Derfor ga du dem i folkenes hånd.

Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.

Likevel, i din store miskunn, gjorde du ikke ende på dem eller forlot dem, for du er en nådig og barmhjertig Gud.

vertheless for thy great mercies' sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God.

Nå derfor, vår Gud, du store, mektige og forferdelige Gud, som holder pakten og viser miskunnhet, se ikke på all den nød som har kommet over oss – våre konger, våre fyrster, våre prester, våre profeter, våre fedre og hele ditt folk – som noe lite, fra assyrerkongenes dager til denne dag.

Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.

Likevel er du rettferdig i alt som har kommet over oss, for du har handlet rett, men vi har gjort ondt.

Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast do right, but we have do wickedly:

Våre konger, våre fyrster, våre prester og våre fedre har ikke holdt din lov, og har ikke hørt på dine bud og dine vitnesbyrd, som du vitnet mot dem.

ither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearked unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them.

For de tjente deg ikke i sine kongedømmer eller i din store godhet som du ga dem, eller i det store og fruktbare landet som du satte foran dem, og de vendte seg ikke fra sine onde gjerninger.

For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodss that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, ither turd they from their wicked works.

Se, vi er slaver i dag, og i det landet som du ga våre fedre til å spise dets frukt og dets gode ting, se, vi er slaver i det.

Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it:

Det gir rikelig avkastning til de kongene du har satt over oss på grunn av våre synder. De hersker også over våre kropper og over våre buskap, etter deres vilje, og vi er i stor nød.

And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.

Og på grunn av alt dette inngår vi en bindende pakt, vi skriver den ned, og våre fyrster, levitter og prester setter sine segl på den.

And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal unto it.
