Deretter kom Israels barn, hele menigheten, til ørkenen Sin i den første måneden. Folket slo seg ned i Kadesh, og der døde Miriam og ble gravlagt.

Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

Det var ikke vann til menigheten, så de samlet seg mot Moses og Aaron.

And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.

Folket klandret Moses og sa: Om vi bare hadde dødd da våre brødre døde for Herrens åsyn!

And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!

Hvorfor har dere ført Herrens menighet ut i denne ørkenen, for at vi og buskapen vår skulle dø her?

And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?

Hvorfor har dere ført oss ut av Egypt for å bringe oss til dette onde stedet? Det er ikke et sted med såkorn, fiken, vinstokker eller granatepler, og det er ikke noe vann å drikke.

And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.

Moses og Aaron forlot forsamlingen og gikk til inngangen til møteteltet, hvor de falt på sine ansikter, og Herrens herlighet viste seg for dem.

And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.

Herren talte til Moses og sa,

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Ta staven og samle menigheten, du og din bror Aaron. Snakk til klippen foran deres øyne, så skal den gi vann, og du skal la vann strømme ut av klippen til menigheten og deres buskap.

Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.

Moses tok staven foran Herren, slik han var befalt.

And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.

Moses og Aaron samlet menigheten foran klippen, og han sa til dem: Hør nå, dere opprørere; skal vi hente vann til dere fra denne klippen?

And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?

Moses løftet hånden og slo klippen to ganger med staven. Da strømmet vannet ut rikelig, så menigheten og buskapen kunne drikke.

And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.

Herren sa til Moses og Aaron: Fordi dere ikke trodde på meg og viste meg hellig blant Israels barn, skal dere ikke føre denne menigheten inn i det landet jeg har gitt dem.

And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

Dette er Meribas vann, der Israels barn skyldte på Herren, og han ble vist hellig blant dem.

This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them.

Moses sendte budbringere fra Kadesh til kongen i Edom og sa: Så sier din bror Israel: Du vet om all motgangen vi har møtt.

And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us:

Våre fedre dro ned til Egypt, og vi har bodd der lenge. Egypterne har gjort oss og våre fedre ulykkelige.

How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers:

Men vi ropte til Herren, og han hørte vår stemme og sendte en engel som førte oss ut av Egypt. Og se, nå er vi i Kadesh, en by ved grensen din.

And when we cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border:

La oss få gå gjennom ditt land. Vi vil ikke gå igjennom åkrene eller vingårdene, vi skal heller ikke drikke av brønnene. Vi vil følge kongeveien, uten å vende oss til høyre eller venstre, inntil vi har passert din grense.

Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.

Men Edom svarte: Du får ikke gå gjennom her, ellers kommer jeg ut mot deg med sverd.

And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.

Israels barn sa til ham: Vi vil gå langs veien, og hvis jeg eller buskapen min drikker av vannet ditt, betaler jeg for det. Jeg vil bare passere til fots, uten å gjøre annet.

And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet.

Men han sa: Du får ikke passere. Og Edom kom ut mot dem med en stor hær og sterk makt.

And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.

Slik nektet Edom å gi Israel lov til å passere gjennom sitt land, så Israel snudde seg bort fra ham.

Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.

Israels barn, hele menigheten, dro fra Kadesh til fjellet Hor.

And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh, and came unto mount Hor.

Herren talte til Moses og Aaron ved grensen av landet Edom på fjellet Hor og sa:

And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the coast of the land of Edom, saying,

Aaron skal forenes med sitt folk; han skal ikke komme inn i det landet jeg har gitt til Israels barn, fordi dere var gjenstridige mot mitt ord ved Meribas vann.

Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Meribah.

Ta Aaron og Eleasar, hans sønn, og før dem opp på fjellet Hor.

Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor:

Ta klærne av Aaron og gi dem til Eleasar, hans sønn. Aaron skal forenes med sitt folk og dø der.

And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son: and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.

Moses gjorde som Herren befalte. De gikk opp på fjellet Hor foran hele menigheten.

And Moses did as the LORD commanded: and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.

Moses tok klærne av Aaron og ga dem til Eleasar, hans sønn. Aaron døde der på toppen av fjellet. Moses og Eleasar kom ned fra fjellet.

And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount: and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.

Da hele menigheten så at Aaron var død, sørget hele Israels hus over Aaron i tretti dager.

And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they mourned for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.
