Da kong Arad, kanaaneeren som bodde i sør, hørte at Israel kom på speidernes vei, kjempet han mot Israel og tok noen av dem til fange.

And when king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners.

Og Israel avla et løfte til Herren og sa: Hvis du virkelig gir dette folket i min hånd, skal jeg utslette deres byer fullstendig.

And Israel vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.

Og Herren hørte Israels røst og overga kanaaneerne. De utslettet dem og deres byer totalt, og stedet ble kaldt Horma.

And the LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.

Så dro de fra fjellet Hor på veien til Rødehavet for å gå rundt Edoms land, og folket mistet motet på grunn av reisen.

And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.

Folket talte mot Gud og mot Moses: Hvorfor har dere ført oss opp fra Egypt for å dø i ørkenen? Det er verken brød eller vann, og vi er lei av dette elendige brødet.

And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

Da sendte Herren brennende slanger blant folket. De bet folket, og mange av Israels folk døde.

And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

Da kom folket til Moses og sa: Vi har syndet, for vi har talt mot Herren og mot deg. Be til Herren om å ta bort slangene fra oss. Og Moses ba for folket.

Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

Og Herren sa til Moses: Lag deg en brennende slange og sett den på en stang, og det skal skje at hver den som er bitt, når han ser på den, skal leve.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

Moses lagde da en kobberslange og satte den på en stang. Hvis noen ble bitt av en slange, og han så på kobberslangen, levde han.

And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

Og Israels barn dro videre og slo leir ved Obot.

And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in Oboth.

Deretter reiste de fra Obot og slo leir ved Ije-Abarim, i ørkenen øst for Moab, mot soloppgangen.

And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at Ije-abarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising.

Derfra dro de og slo leir i Zered-dalen.

From thence they removed, and pitched in the valley of Zared.

Derfra dro de og slo leir på den andre siden av Arnon, som er i ørkenen som kommer fra amorittenes land. For Arnon er grensen mellom Moab og amorittene.

From thence they removed, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness that cometh out of the coasts of the Amorites: for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

Derfor står det i Herrens krigsbok: Det han gjorde ved Rødehavet og ved bekkene i Arnon.

Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,

Og ved bekkenes strøm som flyter ned til bosetningen Ar og ligger langs Moabs grense.

And at the stream of the brooks that goeth down to the dwelling of Ar, and lieth upon the border of Moab.

Derfra dro de til Beer, det er brønnen som Herren talte om til Moses: Samle folket, så jeg kan gi dem vann.

And from thence they went to Beer: that is the well whereof the LORD spake unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

Da sang Israel denne sangen: Spring opp, du brønn, syng til den:

Then Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:

Fyrstene gravde brønnen, folkets adelige gravde den ved lovgivers befaling, med sine staver. Fra ørkenen dro de til Mattana.

The princes digged the well, the nobles of the people digged it, by the direction of the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah:

Fra Mattana dro de til Nahaliel, og fra Nahaliel til Bamot.

And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from Nahaliel to Bamoth:

Fra Bamot, i dalen som er i Moabs land, til toppen av Pisga, som ser ut over Jeshimon.

And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh toward Jeshimon.

Og Israel sendte budbringere til Sihon, amorittenes konge, og sa:

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

La meg få gå gjennom ditt land; vi skal ikke gå inn på jordene eller de vingårdene; vi skal ikke drikke av brønnens vann, men vi skal gå langs kongens hovedvei til vi har passert dine grenser.

Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink of the waters of the well: but we will go along by the king's high way, until we be past thy borders.

Men Sihon tillot ikke Israel å gå gjennom hans grense. Sihon samlet hele sitt folk og gikk ut mot Israel i ørkenen. Han kom til Jahs og kjempet mot Israel.

And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

Israel slo ham med sverdets egg og erobret hans land fra Arnon til Jabbok, helt til ammonittenes grenser, for ammonittenes grense var sterk.

And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon unto Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

Israel tok alle disse byene, og Israel bodde i alle amorittenes byer, i Hesjbon og alle dens landsbyer.

And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof.

For Hesjbon var amorittenes konge Sihons by; han hadde kjempet mot Moabs tidligere konge og tatt alt hans land fra ham, helt til Arnon.

For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto Arnon.

Derfor sier de som taler i ordspråk: Kom til Hesjbon, la Sihons by bli bygd og beredt.

Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come into Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and prepared:

For en ild har gått ut fra Hesjbon, en flamme fra Sihons by. Den har fortært Ar i Moab og herrene til høydene ved Arnon.

For there is a fire gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon: it hath consumed Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of Arnon.

Ve deg, Moab! Du er ødelagt, du folk av Kemosj. Han har gitt sine sønner som slapp unna, og sine døtre, til fangenskap hos amorittenes konge Sihon.

Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: he hath given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity unto Sihon king of the Amorites.

Vi har skutt på dem. Hesjbon er ødelagt helt til Dibon, og vi har lagt dem øde helt til Nofa, som når til Medeba.

We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba.

På denne måten bodde Israel i amorittenes land.

Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

Moses sendte folk for å speide opp Jaser, og de tok dens landsbyer og drev amorittene ut derfra.

And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took the villages thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.

Deretter vendte de om og dro opp veien til Basan, og kongen av Basan, Og, dro ut mot dem med hele sitt folk til kamp ved Edrei.

And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.

Herren sa til Moses: Frykt ham ikke, for jeg har gitt ham i din hånd, og alt hans folk og hans land. Du skal gjøre med ham som du gjorde med amorittenes konge Sihon, som bodde i Hesjbon.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

Så slo de ham og hans sønner og hele hans folk til ingen var igjen, og de tok hans land i eie.

So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.
