Israels barn dro videre og slo leir på Moabs sletter, på denne siden av Jordan, ved Jeriko.

And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho.

Balak, sønn av Sippor, så alt det Israel hadde gjort med amorittene.

And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

Moab ble svært redd for folket, fordi de var mange, og de ble engstelige på grunn av Israels barn.

And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.

Moab sa til de eldste i Midian: «Nå vil denne flokken slikke opp alt rundt oss, som en okse slikker opp gresset på marken.» Balak, sønn av Sippor, var på den tiden konge over Moab.

And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.

Han sendte budbringere til Bileam, sønn av Beor, i Petor ved elven, der hans folk bodde, for å kalle ham og si: «Se, et folk har kommet ut av Egypt. De dekker hele landet og har slått seg ned overfor meg.

He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me:

Kom nå, vær så snill, og forbann dette folket for meg, for de er for sterke for meg. Kanskje jeg da kan klare å slå dem og drive dem ut av landet. Jeg vet at den du velsigner er velsignet, og den du forbanner er forbannet.»

Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.

De eldste i Moab og de eldste i Midian dro av sted med belønninger for spådomskraft i hendene. De ankom til Bileam og overbrakte ham Balaks ord.

And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.

Bileam sa til dem: «Bli her i natt, så skal jeg gi dere svar etter hva Herren sier til meg.» Og lederne fra Moab ble hos Bileam.

And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the LORD shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.

Gud kom til Bileam og sa: «Hvem er de mennene som er hos deg?»

And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?

Bileam svarte Gud: «Balak, sønn av Sippor, Moabs konge, har sendt bud til meg og sagt:

And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,

Se, et folk har kommet ut av Egypt og dekker hele landet. Kom nå, forbann dem for meg. Kanskje jeg kan overvinne dem og drive dem ut.»

Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.

Gud sa til Bileam: «Du skal ikke gå med dem. Du skal ikke forbanne folket, for de er velsignet.»

And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed.

Bileam sto opp om morgenen og sa til Balaks ledere: «Dra tilbake til landet deres, for Herren vil ikke la meg dra med dere.»

And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you.

Moabs ledere dro av sted og kom til Balak og sa: «Bileam nektet å komme med oss.»

And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.

Balak sendte enda flere og mer ærefulle ledere enn de forrige.

And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than they.

De kom til Bileam og sa: «Så sier Balak, sønn av Sippor: 'La ikke noe hindre deg i å komme til meg,

And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:

for jeg vil hedre deg høyt og gjøre alt du ber meg om. Kom, forbann dette folket for meg.'»

For I will promote thee unto very great honour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.

Bileam svarte Balaks tjenere: «Om Balak så gir meg hele huset sitt fylt med sølv og gull, kan jeg ikke gjøre noe mer eller mindre enn det Herren, min Gud, sier.»

And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more.

«Bli derfor natten over her også, så jeg kan få vite hva mer Herren vil si til meg.»

Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more.

Gud kom til Bileam om natten og sa til ham: «Hvis mennene kommer for å kalle på deg, skal du dra med dem, men bare gjøre det jeg sier til deg.»

And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.

Bileam sto opp om morgenen, salte eselet sitt og dro med Moabs ledere.

And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.

Men Guds vrede ble opptent fordi han dro, og Herrens engel sto i veien for å sette seg imot ham. Bileam red på eslet sitt og hadde to tjenere med seg.

And God's anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.

Eselet så Herrens engel stå i veien med dragen sverd i hånden, og eslet svingte av veien og gikk ut på marken. Bileam slo eslet for å få det tilbake på veien.

And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.

Herrens engel sto deretter på en smal sti mellom vingårdene med en mur på begge sider.

But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.

Da eslet så Herrens engel, presset det seg mot muren og klemte Bileams fot mot muren, og han slo det igjen.

And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again.

Herrens engel flyttet seg igjen og sto på et trangt sted hvor det ikke var mulig å svinge hverken til høyre eller venstre.

And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

Da eslet så Herrens engel, la det seg ned under Bileam. Bileam ble sint og slo eslet med staven sin.

And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.

Herrens engel åpnet eslets munn, og det sa til Bileam: «Hva har jeg gjort mot deg, siden du har slått meg disse tre gangene?»

And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

Bileam svarte eslet: «Fordi du har gjort narr av meg! Hadde jeg hatt et sverd i hånden, ville jeg nå ha drept deg.»

And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.

Eslet sa til Bileam: «Er jeg ikke ditt esel som du har ridd på fra den dagen jeg ble din til i dag? Har jeg noen gang gjort slik mot deg?» Han svarte: «Nei.»

And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay.

Da åpnet Herren Bileams øyne, og han så Herrens engel stå i veien med dragen sverd i hånden. Han bøyde hodet og falt på sitt ansikt.

Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.

Herrens engel sa til ham: «Hvorfor har du slått eslet ditt disse tre gangene? Se, jeg har gått ut for å motsette meg deg fordi veien din er pervers i mine øyne.

And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:

Eslet så meg og vendte seg fra meg disse tre gangene. Hadde det ikke vendt seg fra meg, ville jeg nå ha drept deg, men latt det leve.»

And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.

Bileam sa til Herrens engel: «Jeg har syndet. Jeg visste ikke at det var du som sto i veien for meg. Men hvis dette er ondt i dine øyne, vil jeg vende tilbake.»

And Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.

Herrens engel sa til Bileam: «Dra med mennene, men du skal bare si det jeg forteller deg.» Så Bileam gikk sammen med Balaks ledere.

And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

Da Balak hørte at Bileam kom, gikk han ham i møte ved en by i Moab, ved grensen til Arnon, ytterst i landet.

And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.

Balak sa til Bileam: «Har jeg ikke sendt bud om å kalle deg? Hvorfor kom du ikke til meg? Er jeg ikke i stand til å hedre deg?»

And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?

Bileam svarte Balak: «Se, nå har jeg kommet til deg. Men har jeg nå makt til å si noe som helst? Det ord Gud legger i min munn, det skal jeg tale.»

And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.

Bileam dro med Balak, og de kom til Kirjat-Husot.

And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjath-huzoth.

Balak ofret storfe og sauer og sendte noe til Bileam og de lederne som var med ham.

And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.

Neste dag tok Balak med seg Bileam og førte ham opp til Bamoths høyder, så han kunne se en del av folket.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.
