Da Bileam så at det var til glede for Herren å velsigne Israel, gikk han ikke som før for å søke tegn, men vendte sitt ansikt mot ørkenen.

And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.

Bileam løftet blikket og så Israel boende i sine telt etter sine stammer, og Guds Ånd kom over ham.

And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him.

Han tok opp sin lignelse og sa: «Så sier Bileam, Beors sønn, mannen med åpne øyne:

And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said:

Han som hørte Guds ord, som så Den Allmektiges syn, som falt i transe, men hadde åpne øyne.

He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:

Hvor vakre er dine telt, Jakob, dine boliger, Israel!

How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel!

De brer seg ut som daler, som hager langs elven, som aloe-trær Herren har plantet, som sedertrær ved vannet.

As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river's side, as the trees of lign aloes which the LORD hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters.

Han vil øse vann fra sine spann, og hans etterkommere skal være i mange vann. Hans konge skal være større enn Agag, og hans rike skal bli opphøyet.

He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted.

Gud førte ham ut av Egypt; han har styrke som en villokse, han skal fortære folkene som er hans fiender og knuse deres ben og gjennombore dem med sine piler.

God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.

Han la seg ned, han strakte seg som en løve, som en stor løvinne: hvem tør vekke ham? Velsignet er den som velsigner deg, og forbannet er den som forbanner deg.

He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall stir him up? Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth thee.

Da ble Balak brennende sint på Bileam, og han klappet i hendene og sa til Bileam: «Jeg har kalt deg for å forbanne mine fiender, men se, du har velsignet dem grundig disse tre gangene.

And Balak's anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together: and Balak said unto Balaam, I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed them these three times.

Gå nå til ditt eget sted! Jeg tenkte å hedre deg stort, men se, Herren har holdt deg tilbake fra ære.»

Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto great honour; but, lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honour.

Bileam svarte Balak: «Talte jeg ikke også til dine sendebud som du sendte til meg og sa:

And Balaam said unto Balak, Spake I not also to thy messengers which thou sentest unto me, saying,

Om Balak gir meg sitt hus fylt med sølv og gull, kan jeg ikke gå utover Herrens befaling for å gjøre godt eller ondt av meg selv. Det Herren sier, det vil jeg tale.

If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own mind; but what the LORD saith, that will I speak?

Nå, se, jeg går til mitt folk. Kom, jeg vil la deg vite hva dette folk skal gjøre med ditt folk i de siste dager.»

And now, behold, I go unto my people: come therefore, and I will advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days.

Han tok opp sin lignelse og sa: «Så sier Bileam, Beors sønn, mannen med åpne øyne:

Han som hørte Guds ord, som kjenner Den Høyestes viten, som så Den Allmektiges syn, som falt i transe, men hadde åpne øyne.

He hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:

Jeg ser ham, men ikke nå; jeg skuer ham, men ikke nær. En stjerne stiger opp fra Jakob, en herskerstav reiser seg fra Israel. Han skal slå Moabs hjørner og ødelegge alle etterkommere av Sheth.

I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.

Edom skal bli en eiendom, og Se'ir skal også bli en eiendom for sine fiender, mens Israel skal vise kraft.

And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly.

Fra Jakob skal det komme en som skal herske, og han skal ødelegge det som blir igjen av byen.

Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.

Da han så på Amalek, tok han opp sin lignelse og sa: «Amalek var den første blant nasjonene, men hans siste dag vil være å gå til grunne for alltid.»

And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, Amalek was the first of the nations; but his latter end shall be that he perish for ever.

Så han mot kenittene og tok opp sin lignelse: «Sterk er din bolig, du har gjort din rede i en klippe.

And he looked on the Kenites, and took up his parable, and said, Strong is thy dwellingplace, and thou puttest thy nest in a rock.

Likevel skal kenitten bli ødelagt før Assur fører deg bort i fangenskap.»

Nevertheless the Kenite shall be wasted, until Asshur shall carry thee away captive.

Han tok opp sin lignelse og sa: «Ve, hvem skal leve når Gud gjør dette!

And he took up his parable, and said, Alas, who shall live when God doeth this!

Skip skal komme fra Kittim-kysten, og de skal plage Assur og plage Eber, og han skal også gå til grunne for alltid.»

And ships shall come from the coast of Chittim, and shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber, and he also shall perish for ever.

Bileam reiste seg, dro og vendte tilbake til sitt sted, og Balak dro også sin vei.

And Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place: and Balak also went his way.
