Da kom døtrene til Selofhad, sønn av Hefer, sønn av Gilead, sønn av Makir, sønn av Manasse, av familiene til Manasse, sønn av Josef. Døtrene hans het Mahla, Noa, Hogla, Milka og Tirsa.

Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph: and these are the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.

De stilte seg foran Moses, Eleasar, presten, og foran høvdingene og hele menigheten ved inngangen til møteteltet og sa,

And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,

Vår far døde i ørkenen. Han var ikke blant dem som fulgte Korah og var i opprør mot Herren, men døde for sin egen synd, og han etterlot seg ingen sønner.

Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah; but died in his own sin, and had no sons.

Hvorfor skal vår fars navn bli utslettet fra hans slekt fordi han ikke hadde noen sønn? Så gi oss en arv blant våre fars brødre.

Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.

Da brakte Moses saken deres fram for Herren.

And Moses brought their cause before the LORD.

Og Herren talte til Moses og sa,

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Døtrene til Selofhad har rett; du skal gi dem en eiendom som arv blant deres fars brødre, og føre arven fra deres far over til dem.

The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.

Si til Israels barn: Når en mann dør og ikke etterlater seg en sønn, skal dere føre arven over til hans datter.

And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.

Hvis han ikke har noen datter, skal dere gi hans arv til hans brødre.

And if he have no daughter, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren.

Hvis han ikke har noen brødre, skal dere gi hans arv til hans fars brødre.

And if he have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his father's brethren.

Og hvis hans far ikke har noen brødre, skal dere gi arven til den nærmeste slektningen innen hans familie, og han skal eie den. Dette skal være en lov for Israels barn, som Herren har befalt Moses.

And if his father have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be unto the children of Israel a statute of judgment, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Og Herren sa til Moses: Gå opp på Abarim-fjellet og se landet som jeg har gitt Israels barn.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Get thee up into this mount Abarim, and see the land which I have given unto the children of Israel.

Når du har sett det, skal du samle deg til dine forfedre, slik som din bror Aron ble samlet.

And when thou hast seen it, thou also shalt be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother was gathered.

For dere var ulydige mot mitt ord ved vannet i ørkenen Zin, da menigheten kom i strid, og dere helliget meg ikke ved vannet foran deres øyne. Dette er Meribas vann i Kadesj, i ørkenen Zin.

For ye rebelled against my commandment in the desert of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the water before their eyes: that is the water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.

Moses talte til Herren og sa,

And Moses spake unto the LORD, saying,

Må Herren, alle levende ånders Gud, utpeke en mann over menigheten,

Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation,

som kan gå ut og komme inn foran dem, og som kan lede dem ut og lede dem inn, slik at Herrens menighet ikke blir som sauer uten hyrde.

Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD be not as sheep which have no shepherd.

Og Herren sa til Moses: Ta Josva, sønn av Nun, en mann som har ånden i seg, og legg din hånd på ham,

And the LORD said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of n, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him;

og still ham framfor Eleasar, presten, og for hele menigheten og gi ham hans oppgave i deres nærvær.

And set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight.

Du skal gi ham noe av din ære, slik at alle Israels barn kan adlyde ham.

And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.

Han skal stå foran Eleasar, presten, som skal rådspørre Herren for ham ved hjelp av Urim; og ved hans ord skal de gå ut, og ved hans ord skal de komme inn, både han og alle Israels barn med ham, hele menigheten.

And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of Urim before the LORD: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.

Moses gjorde som Herren hadde befalt ham. Han tok Josva og stilte ham foran Eleasar, presten, og hele menigheten,

And Moses did as the LORD commanded him: and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation:

og han la sine hender på ham og gav ham oppgaven, slik Herren hadde befalt ved Moses.

And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.
