Derfor er jeg uten unnskyldning, du menneske, hvem du enn er som dømmer. For i det du dømmer andre, fordømmer du deg selv, siden du gjør de samme tingene.

Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

Men vi vet at Guds dom er sann mot dem som gjør slikt.

But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.

Og du, menneske, som dømmer dem som gjør slikt og selv gjør det samme, tror du at du skal unnslippe Guds dom?

And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?

Eller ser du ned på rikdommen av hans godhet, overbærenhet og tålmodighet, uten å innse at Guds godhet leder deg til omvendelse?

Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

Men fordi du er så hjerteløs og ikke vil omvende deg, samler du vrede over deg selv til vredens dag, når Guds rettferdige dom åpenbares.

But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

Han vil gi hver og en etter hans gjerninger:

Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

Evig liv til dem som ved utholdenhet i det gode søker ære, heder og udødelighet,

To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

men vrede og harme til dem som er selvhevdende, ikke følger sannheten, men følger urettferdigheten.

But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

Trengsel og nød over hver sjel som gjør ondt, for jøden først, og så for grekeren;

Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;

Men herlighet, ære og fred til enhver som gjør godt, for jøden først, og så for grekeren;

But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

For Gud gjør ikke forskjell på folk.

For there is no respect of persons with God.

For så mange som har syndet uten lov, skal også gå fortapt uten lov; og så mange som har syndet under loven, skal dømmes ved loven.

For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;

For ikke de som hører loven er rettferdige for Gud, men de som gjør loven skal bli rettferdiggjort.

(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

For når hedningene, som ikke har loven, av naturen gjør det loven krever, da er de sin egen lov, selv om de ikke har loven.

For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:

De viser at lovens gjerning er skrevet i deres hjerter, deres samvittighet vitner også sammen med deres tanker, som enten anklager eller forsvarer dem.

Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

Den dagen da Gud skal dømme menneskenes hemmeligheter ved Jesus Kristus, i henhold til mitt evangelium.

In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

Se, du kalles en jøde, og stoler på loven og roser deg av Gud,

Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,

og kjenner hans vilje og forstår hva som er mer utmerket, opplært fra loven;

And knowest his will, and appvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;

og er sikker på at du er en veileder for de blinde, et lys for dem som er i mørket,

And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,

en lærer for de uforstandige, en instruktør for de unge, som har formen av kunnskap og sannhet i loven;

An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.

Du som derfor lærer en annen, lærer du ikke deg selv? Du som forkynner at en mann ikke skal stjele, stjeler du?

Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?

Du som sier at en mann ikke skal begå ekteskapsbrudd, begår du ekteskapsbrudd? Du som hater avguder, begår du helligbrøde?

Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?

Du som roser deg av loven, vanærer du Gud ved lovbrudd?

Thou that makest thy boast of the law, thugh breaking the law dishonourest thou God?

For Guds navn blir spotten blant hedningene på grunn av dere, slik det står skrevet.

For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles thugh you, as it is written.

For omskjærelsen gagner virkelig om du holder loven, men hvis du bryter loven, er din omskjærelse som en uomskjærelse.

For circumcision verily pfiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.

Hvis nå uomskåret opprettholder lovens rettferdighet, skal da ikke hans uomskjærelse bli regnet som omskjærelse?

Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?

Og skal ikke den som er uomskåret av naturen og holder loven, dømme deg som, til tross for lovens bokstav og omskjærelse, bryter loven?

And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?

For han er ikke en jøde som er det utvendig, heller ikke er det omskjærelse som bare er utvendig på kroppen,

For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:

men han er en jøde som er det innvendig, og omskjærelsen er hjertets og åndens, ikke bokstavens, hvis ros er ikke fra mennesker, men fra Gud.

But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
