In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD unto hariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying,

Herren har vært meget misfornøyd med deres fedre.

The LORD hath been sore displeased with your fathers.

Derfor skal du si til dem: Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Vend dere til meg, sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, så vil jeg vende meg til dere, sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud.

Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts.

Vær ikke som deres fedre, til hvem de tidligere profeter ropte, og sa: Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Vend dere nå fra deres onde veier og deres onde gjerninger. Men de hørte ikke, og de adlød ikke meg, sier Herren.

Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the LORD.

Deres fedre, hvor er de? Og profetene, lever de for alltid?

Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever?

Men mine ord og mine forskrifter, som jeg befalte mine tjenere profetene, tok de ikke fatt på deres fedre? Og de vendte tilbake og sa: Som Herren, hærskarenes Gud, hadde i sinne å gjøre med oss, i tråd med våre veier og våre gjerninger, slik har han gjort med oss.

But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the LORD of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.

På den tjuefjerde dagen i den ellevte måneden, som er måneden Sebat, i det andre året av Darius, kom Herrens ord til Sakarja, sønn av Berekja, sønn av Iddo, profeten, og sa:

Upon the four and twentieth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Sebat, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD unto hariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying,

Jeg så om natten, og se, en mann red på en rød hest, og han sto blant myrtetrærne som var i dalbunnen; og bak ham var det røde hester, spraglete og hvite.

I saw by night, and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees that were in the bottom; and behind him were there red horses, speckled, and white.

Da sa jeg: Å, min herre, hva er disse? Og engelen som talte med meg sa til meg: Jeg vil vise deg hva dette er.

Then said I, O my lord, what are these? And the angel that talked with me said unto me, I will shew thee what these be.

Og mannen som sto blant myrtetrærne svarte og sa: Dette er de som Herren har sendt for å vandre gjennom jorden.

And the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the LORD hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth.

Og de svarte Herrens engel som sto blant myrtetrærne og sa: Vi har vandret gjennom jorden, og se, hele jorden sitter stille og er i ro.

And they answered the angel of the LORD that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.

Da svarte Herrens engel og sa: Å, Herre, hærskarenes Gud, hvor lenge vil du ikke vise barmhjertighet mot Jerusalem og byene i Juda, som du har vært vred på i disse sytti årene?

Then the angel of the LORD answered and said, O LORD of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years?

Og Herren svarte engelen som talte med meg med gode og trøstende ord.

And the LORD answered the angel that talked with me with good words and comfortable words.

Så sa engelen som talte med meg: Rop ut og si: Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Jeg er nidkjær for Jerusalem og Sion med stor nidkjærhet.

So the angel that communed with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy.

Og jeg er svært misfornøyd med hedningene som lever i ro; for jeg var bare litt vred, men de hjalp til med å øke uroen.

And I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction.

Derfor sier Herren: Jeg har vendt tilbake til Jerusalem med barmhjertighet; mitt hus skal bli bygget i den, sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, og en målesnor skal strekkes ut over Jerusalem.

Therefore thus saith the LORD; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith the LORD of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem.

Rop enda en gang og si: Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Mine byer skal enda en gang flyte over av velstand; og Herren skal enda en gang trøste Sion og enda en gang velge Jerusalem.

Cry yet, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and the LORD shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem.

Da løftet jeg mine øyne opp og så, og se, fire horn.

Then lifted I up mine eyes, and saw, and behold four horns.

Og jeg spurte engelen som talte med meg: Hva er disse? Og han svarte meg: Dette er hornene som har spredt Juda, Israel og Jerusalem.

And I said unto the angel that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.

Og Herren viste meg fire håndverkere.

And the LORD shewed me four carpenters.

Da sa jeg: Hva kommer disse for å gjøre? Og han svarte og sa: Dette er hornene som har spredt Juda, så ingen kunne løfte hodet; men disse er kommet for å skremme dem, for å kaste ut hornene til hedningene som løftet sine horn over Juda-landet for å spre det.

Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it.
