Verse 1
Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and laying himself down before the house of God, a very large assembly of men, women, and children gathered to him out of Israel, for the people wept bitterly.

Verse 2
And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said to Ezra, We have sinned against our God and have taken foreign wives from the peoples of the land, yet now there is hope for Israel in this matter.
And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.
Verse 3
Therefore, let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and their children, according to the advice of my lord and those who tremble at the command of our God. Let it be done according to the law.

Verse 4
Arise, for this matter is your responsibility. We also are with you. Be strong and do it.
Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it.

Then Ezra arose and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel swear that they would do according to this word. And they swore.

Verse 6
Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib. When he arrived there, he ate no bread and drank no water, for he mourned because of the transgression of those who had been taken captive.

Verse 7
And they issued a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the children of the captivity, that they should gather at Jerusalem;

Verse 8
and that whoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the leaders and elders, all his property would be forfeited, and he himself would be separated from the congregation of those who had been carried away.

Verse 9
Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered at Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month. All the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the heavy rain.

Verse 10
And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, You have transgressed and have taken foreign wives, adding to the guilt of Israel.
And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel.
Verse 11
Now therefore make confession to the LORD, the God of your fathers, and do His will; separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives.

Verse 12
Then all the assembly answered with a loud voice, As you have said, so must we do.
Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do.
Verse 13
But there are many people, and it is a time of heavy rain, and we are not able to stand outside. Nor is this a task that can be accomplished in a day or two, for we have greatly transgressed in this matter.
But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing.
Verse 14
Let our leaders of the entire assembly stand, and let all those in our cities who have taken foreign wives come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of each city, until the fierce wrath of our God concerning this matter is turned away from us.
Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter be turned from us.
Verse 15
Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supported them.
Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah were employed about this matter: and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.
Verse 16
So the descendants of the captivity did accordingly. And Ezra the priest, along with certain heads of the fathers' households, each of them by name, were designated, and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.
And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.
Verse 17
By the first day of the first month, they finished questioning all the men who had taken foreign wives.
And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month.
Verse 18
Among the sons of the priests who had taken foreign wives were found among the sons of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah.
And among the sons of the priests there were found that had taken strange wives: namely, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren; Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.
Verse 19
They gave their promise that they would put away their wives. Being guilty, they presented a ram of the flock for their guilt offering.
And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their trespass.

Also of the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (also called Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.
