Samuel sa til hele Israel: "Se, jeg har hørt på deres røst i alt dere har sagt til meg og har satt en konge over dere.

Then Samuel said to all Israel, 'Here I am; I have listened to you in everything you have said to me, and I have set a king over you.'

Nå ser dere at kongen går foran dere. Jeg er gammel og grå, og mine sønner er hos dere. Jeg har gått foran dere fra min ungdom til denne dag.

Now here is the king walking before you, but I am old and gray, and my sons are here with you. I have walked before you from my youth until this day.

Her er jeg. Vitne mot meg for Herren og hans salvede: Hvem har jeg tatt en okse fra? Hvem har jeg tatt en esel fra? Hvem har jeg undertrykt? Hvilken gave har jeg tatt for å lukke øynene for noe? Jeg vil gi det tilbake til dere.

Here I am. Testify against me before the LORD and before His anointed: Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I defrauded or oppressed? From whose hand have I taken a bribe to blind my eyes to wrongdoing? If so, I will restore it to you.

De svarte: "Du har ikke undertrykt oss, ikke knust oss, og du har ikke tatt noe fra noen manns hånd."

They replied, 'You have not defrauded us, oppressed us, or taken anything from anyone’s hand.'

Han sa til dem: "Herren er vitne, og hans salvede er vitne i dag, at dere ikke har funnet noe i min hånd." Og de svarte: "Han er vitne."

Samuel said to them, 'The LORD is a witness against you, and His anointed is a witness today, that you have not found anything in my hand.' 'He is a witness,' they said.

Samuel sa til folket: "Det er Herren som gjorde Moses og Aron og som førte deres fedre opp fra Egyptens land.

Then Samuel said to the people, 'It is the LORD who appointed Moses and Aaron and who brought your ancestors out of the land of Egypt.'

Stå nå fram, så skal jeg føre sak med dere for Herren om alle de rettferdige gjerningene til Herren, som han gjorde for dere og deres fedre.

Now then, stand here, that I may confront you before the LORD regarding all His righteous acts that He has done for you and your ancestors.

Da Jakob kom til Egypt, ropte deres fedre til Herren, og Herren sendte Moses og Aron og førte deres fedre ut av Egypt og lot dem bo på dette stedet.

When Jacob went into Egypt, your ancestors cried out to the LORD, and He sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your ancestors out of Egypt and settled them in this place.

Men de glemte Herren sin Gud, og han solgte dem i hånden til Sisera, hærføreren i Khasor, og i hånden til filisterne, og i hånden til Moabs konge, som kjempet mot dem.

But they forgot the LORD their God, so He sold them into the hands of Sisera, the commander of Hazor’s army, and into the hands of the Philistines and the king of Moab, who fought against them.

De ropte til Herren og sa: 'Vi har syndet, for vi har forlatt Herren og tjent Baalene og Astarte. Redde oss nå fra våre fienders hånd, så vil vi tjene deg.'

Then they cried out to the LORD, saying, 'We have sinned, for we have abandoned the LORD and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. But now, deliver us from the hands of our enemies, and we will serve You.'

Herren sendte Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jefta og Samuel og reddet dere fra fiendene rundt om. Dere bodde trygt.

Then the LORD sent Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jephthah, and Samuel, and He delivered you from the hand of your enemies on every side, so that you lived in safety.

Men da dere så at Nahasj, kongen av Ammon, kom mot dere, sa dere til meg: 'Nei, vi vil ha en konge over oss,' mens Herren deres Gud er deres konge.

But when you saw that Nahash, king of the Ammonites, came against you, you said to me, ‘No, we want a king to reign over us,’ even though the LORD your God was your king.

Se nå kongen dere har valgt, den dere har bedt om. Se, Herren har satt en konge over dere.

Now here is the king you have chosen, the one you asked for. See, the LORD has set a king over you.

Hvis dere frykter Herren, tjener ham, hører på hans røst og ikke gjør opprør mot Herrens bud, så skal både dere og den konge som hersker over dere følge Herren deres Gud.

If you fear the LORD, serve Him, obey His voice, and do not rebel against His command, then both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the LORD your God.

Men hvis dere ikke hører på Herrens røst og gjør opprør mot hans bud, da skal Herrens hånd være mot dere, som den var mot deres fedre.

But if you do not obey the LORD and rebel against His command, then the hand of the LORD will be against you, as it was against your ancestors.

Stå nå fram og se denne store saken som Herren skal gjøre for deres øyne.

Now then, stand still and see this great thing the LORD is about to do before your eyes.

Er det ikke nå hvetens innhøstning? Jeg vil påkalle Herren, så vil han sende torden og regn. Da skal dere erkjenne og se hvor stor ondskap dere har gjort i Herrens øyne ved å be om en konge.

Is it not wheat harvest today? I will call out to the LORD, and He will send thunder and rain. Then you will realize and see how great is the evil you have done in the eyes of the LORD by asking for a king.

Samuel påkalte Herren, og Herren sendte torden og regn den dagen. Hele folket fryktet Herren og Samuel svært.

So Samuel called to the LORD, and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day, and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.

Folket sa til Samuel: "Be for dine tjenere til Herren din Gud, så vi ikke dør; for vi har lagt til all vår synd denne onde gjerning, å be om en konge for oss."

The people all said to Samuel, 'Pray to the LORD your God for your servants, so that we will not die, for we have added this evil to all our sins by asking for a king.'

Samuel sa til folket: "Frykt ikke. Dere har gjort alt dette onde, men avvik ikke fra å følge Herren. Tjen Herren av hele deres hjerte.

Samuel said to the people, 'Do not be afraid. You have done all this evil, yet do not turn away from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart.'

Ikke avvik for å følge tomhet, som ikke kan gagne eller redde, for det er tomhet.

Do not turn aside, for you would be following things that are worthless and cannot benefit or deliver you, for they are meaningless.

Herren vil ikke forlate sitt folk, for sitt store navns skyld, fordi det har behaget Herren å gjøre dere til sitt folk.

For the LORD will not abandon His people for the sake of His great name, because it has pleased the LORD to make you His people.

For også jeg vil ikke synde mot Herren ved å oppholde bønnen for dere. Jeg skal veilede dere på den gode og rette vei.

As for me, far be it from me to sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you. Instead, I will instruct you in the good and upright way.

Frykt bare Herren og tjen ham trofast av hele deres hjerte. Tenk på de store ting han har gjort for dere.

Only fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully with all your heart. Consider what great things He has done for you.

Men hvis dere gjør ondt, vil både dere og deres konge bli feid bort.

But if you persist in doing evil, both you and your king will be swept away.
