From that day forward, Saul took David with him and did not permit him to return to his father’s house.

David went out and was successful in everything Saul sent him to do. Saul gave him command over the soldiers, and he was well-liked by everyone, including Saul’s officers.

As David was returning after striking down the Philistine, women came from all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing to meet King Saul with tambourines, songs of joy, and musical instruments.

The women sang as they danced: "Saul has killed his thousands, and David his tens of thousands."

Saul became very angry at this and it displeased him greatly. He said, "They have credited David with tens of thousands but only thousands to me. What more can he have but the kingdom?"

From that day onward, Saul kept a close and suspicious eye on David.

Neste dag kom en ond ånd fra Gud over Saul, og han profeterte i sitt hus, mens David spilte med hånden som hver dag. Og Saul hadde et spyd i hånden.

The next day, an evil spirit from God came powerfully upon Saul, and he raved inside the house while David was playing the harp, as he usually did. Saul had a spear in his hand.

Saul kastet spydet og tenkte: «Jeg skal kaste det mot David og feste ham til veggen.» Men David vek unna for ham to ganger.

Saul hurled the spear, saying, "I’ll pin David to the wall." But David evaded him twice.

Saul was afraid of David because the LORD was with David but had departed from Saul.

Derfor fjernet Saul ham fra seg og satte ham som høvding over tusen. Og han gikk ut og inn blant folket.

So Saul removed David from his presence and appointed him as a commander over a thousand men. David led the troops out and brought them back in.

David viste klokskap i alt sitt virke, og Herren var med ham.

David succeeded in everything he did because the LORD was with him.

Da Saul så at han var meget klok, ble han redd for ham.

When Saul saw how successful David was, he became afraid of him.

Men hele Israel og Juda elsket David, fordi han gikk ut og inn foran dem.

But all Israel and Judah loved David because he led them in their campaigns.

Saul sa til David: «Se, min eldste datter Merab, henne vil jeg gi deg til hustru. Vær da en tapper mann for meg, og strid Herrens kriger.» For Saul tenkte: «La ikke min hånd komme over ham, men filisternes hånd.»

Saul said to David, 'Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage, but you must serve me bravely and fight the LORD’s battles.' For Saul thought, 'I will not raise my hand against him; let the Philistines do that.'

David svarte Saul: «Hvem er jeg, og hva er mitt liv, min fars slekt i Israel, at jeg skulle være kongens svigersønn?»

But David said to Saul, 'Who am I, and what is my family or my father’s clan in Israel, that I should become the king’s son-in-law?'

Men på den tiden da Saul skulle gi sin datter Merab til David, ble hun gitt til Adriel, meholatitten, til hustru.

But when the time came for Merab, Saul’s daughter, to be given to David, she was given instead to Adriel of Meholah in marriage.

Men Mikal, Sauls datter, elsket David, og da de fortalte det til Saul, syntes han det var godt.

Now Saul’s daughter Michal loved David, and when they told Saul about it, he was pleased.

Then Saul ordered his servants, 'Speak to David privately and say, "Look, the king likes you, and all his servants love you; now become his son-in-law."'

Sauls tjenere talte disse ordene i Davids ører. David sa: «Synes dere det er lite å bli kongens svigersønn, etter som jeg er en fattig og ringe mann?»

They repeated these words to David. But David said, 'Do you think it is a small matter to become the king’s son-in-law? I’m only a poor man and little known.'

When Saul’s servants reported back what David had said,

Saul replied, 'Say to David, "The king wants no other price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies."' Saul’s plan was to have David fall by the hands of the Philistines.

When Saul’s servants told David these words, it pleased David to become the king’s son-in-law. However, the allotted time had not yet passed.

Så reiste David seg og gikk, han og hans menn, og slo to hundre menn blant filisterne. David tok deres forhuder og førte dem, fullt antall, til kongen, for å bli kongens svigersønn. Saul ga ham derfor sin datter Mikal til hustru.

So David arose and went out with his men, and they struck down two hundred Philistines. David brought their foreskins and presented the full number to the king so that he might become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage.

Da Saul så og skjønte at Herren var med David, og at Mikal, Sauls datter, elsket ham,

When Saul realized that the LORD was with David and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him,

da fryktet Saul enda mer for David, og Saul ble Davids fiende for alltid.

Saul grew even more afraid of David. He continually regarded him as an enemy for the rest of his days.

Da filisternes fyrster dro ut, skjedde det at David handlet klokere enn alle Sauls tjenere, så hans navn ble meget ansett.

The Philistine commanders continued to go out to battle, but every time they went out, David had more success than all of Saul’s servants, and he became highly esteemed.
