Now when the king was settled in his house, and the LORD had given him rest from all of his enemies around him,

sa kongen til profeten Natan: «Se, nå bor jeg i et hus av sedertre, mens Guds ark bor under teltduker.»

the king said to Nathan the prophet, "See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God remains in a tent."

Natan sa da til kongen: «Gjør alt som ligger på hjertet ditt, for Herren er med deg.»

Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you."

Men samme natt kom Herrens ord til Natan,

But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan,

og sa: «Gå og si til min tjener David: Så sier Herren: Skal du bygge meg et hus å bo i?

"Go and tell my servant David, 'Thus says the LORD: Is it you who would build me a house to dwell in?

Jeg har ikke bodd i noe hus fra den dag jeg førte israelittene opp fra Egypt, til denne dag; men jeg har vandret omkring i et telt, i et tabernakel.

For I have not lived in a house since the day I brought the people of Israel up from Egypt, to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent, a tabernacle.

Hvor jeg enn har vandret blant hele Israel, har jeg noen gang sagt et ord til en av Israels stammehøvdinger jeg satte til å hyrde mitt folk Israel, og spurt: Hvorfor har dere ikke bygd meg et hus av sedertre?

In all the places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word to any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, 'Why have you not built me a house of cedar?'

Now therefore, this is what you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the LORD of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people Israel.

I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth.

And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. Evil people will not continue to oppress them as they did at the beginning,

helt siden den dag jeg satte dommere over mitt folk Israel. Jeg vil gi deg fred for alle dine fiender. Herren forkynner for deg at Herren vil bygge et hus for deg.

from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house.

Når dine dager er fulltallige og du hviler hos dine fedre, vil jeg oppreise din ætt etter deg, en som skal utgå av ditt eget liv; jeg vil grunnfeste hans kongedømme.

When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom.

Han skal bygge et hus for mitt navn, og jeg vil trygge hans trone til evig tid.

He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

Jeg vil være hans far, og han skal være min sønn. Når han gjør urett, vil jeg tukte ham med menneskenes ris og med plager fra menneskebarn.

I will be his father, and he shall be my son. When he sins, I will discipline him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the sons of men.

Men min miskunn skal ikke vike fra ham, som jeg lot den vike fra Saul, som jeg avsatte for deg.

But my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.

Ditt hus og ditt kongedømme skal alltid stå for mitt ansikt, og din trone skal være grunnfestet til evig tid.

And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.

Natan talte til David etter alle disse ordene og hele dette synet.

Nathan spoke all these words and this entire vision to David.

Da gikk kong David inn og satte seg for Herrens ansikt og sa: «Hvem er jeg, Herre Gud, og hva er mitt hus, siden du har ført meg så langt?

Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said, "Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?

Og dette var ikke nok i dine øyne, Herre Gud, men du har også talt om din tjeners hus i fjern fremtid. Er dette menneskets vei, Herre Gud?

And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord GOD. You have also spoken of your servant's house for a long time to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord GOD!

Hva mer kan David tale til deg? Du kjenner jo din tjener, Herre Gud.

And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord GOD.

For ditt ords skyld, og etter ditt hjerte, har du gjort alt dette store og åpenbart det for din tjener.

Because of your word and according to your own heart, you have done all this great thing to make your servant know it.

Derfor er du stor, Herre Gud. Ingen er som du, og det finnes ingen Gud uten deg, etter alt vi har hørt med våre ører.

Therefore you are great, O LORD God, for there is no one like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem as his people, to make a name for himself and to perform great and awesome deeds for your land, driving out nations and their gods before your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt?

And you established your people Israel as your own people forever, and you, O LORD, became their God.

And now, O LORD God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and his house, and do as you have spoken.

May your name be magnified forever, saying, 'The LORD of hosts is God over Israel,' and may the house of your servant David be established before you.

Now therefore, please bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord GOD, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.
