Then the high priest asked, 'Are these charges true?'

Han svarte: «Brødre og fedre, hør på meg! Den herlige Gud viste seg for vår far Abraham mens han var i Mesopotamia, før han slo seg ned i Karan.

Stephen replied: 'Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was living in Mesopotamia, before he settled in Haran.

Han sa til ham: 'Gå ut fra ditt land og fra din slekt, og dra til det landet jeg vil vise deg.'

'He said to him, 'Leave your country and your relatives and come to the land that I will show you.'

Da dro han ut fra kaldeernes land og bosatte seg i Karan. Etter at hans far var død, førte Gud ham til dette landet som dere nå bor i.

So Abraham left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. After his father died, God brought him to this land where you are now living.

Men Gud ga ham ingen arv i det, ikke en gang en fotsbredd, men lovte å gi det til ham til eiendom og til hans etterkommere etter ham, selv om han da ikke hadde noe barn.

But God gave him no inheritance here, not even enough ground to set his foot on. He promised that he would give it to him as a possession and to his descendants after him, even though at that time Abraham had no child.

Gud talte slik: 'Hans etterkommere skal bo som fremmede i et land som ikke er deres, og de skal bli gjort til slaver og plaget i fire hundre år.'

God spoke to Abraham in this way: 'Your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land, and they will be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.

'Men det folket som holder dem i slaveri, vil jeg dømme,' sa Gud. 'Og etter dette skal de dra ut og tilbe meg på dette stedet.'

But I will judge the nation that they serve as slaves,' said God, 'and afterward, they will come out and worship me in this place.'

Han ga ham omskjærelsens pakt. Deretter fikk Abraham sønnen Isak og omskar ham på den åttende dagen. Isak ble far til Jakob, og Jakob ble far til de tolv patriarkene.

Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. Under this covenant, Abraham became the father of Isaac, and on the eighth day, he circumcised him. Isaac then became the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of the twelve patriarchs.

Because they were jealous of Joseph, the patriarchs sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him.

God rescued him from all his troubles, and He granted him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him ruler over Egypt and all his household.

Then a famine came over the entire land of Egypt and Canaan, bringing great distress, and our ancestors could not find food.

This king dealt deceitfully with our people and oppressed our ancestors by forcing them to abandon their infants, so they would not survive.

At that time, Moses was born, and he was beautiful in God's sight. He was cared for in his father's house for three months.

When Moses saw someone being mistreated, he came to his defense and avenged the oppressed man by striking down the Egyptian.

Moses assumed that his brothers would understand that God was using him to deliver them, but they did not understand.

The next day, he appeared to two of them as they were fighting and tried to reconcile them, saying, 'Men, you are brothers. Why are you hurting each other?'

But the man who was wronging his neighbor pushed Moses away and said, 'Who made you ruler and judge over us?'

'Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?' the man continued.

When Moses heard this, he fled and became a foreigner in the land of Midian, where he had two sons.

After forty years had passed, an angel of the Lord appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the wilderness near Mount Sinai.

Moses was amazed at what he saw. As he approached to look more closely, he heard the voice of the Lord say,

'Jeg er dine fedres Gud, Abrahams Gud, Isaks Gud og Jakobs Gud.' Moses skalv av frykt og våget ikke å se opp.

'I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.' Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look closely.

Then the Lord said to him, 'Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.'

'I have surely seen the oppression of my people in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning. I have come down to rescue them. Now come, I will send you to Egypt.'

This same Moses, whom they had rejected by saying, 'Who made you ruler and judge?'—this is the one God sent as ruler and deliverer through the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

This is the one who led them out, performing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.

This is the same Moses who said to the Israelites, 'God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.'

This is the one who was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors; he received living words to pass on to us.

But our ancestors were unwilling to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.

They said to Aaron, 'Make us gods who will lead us, for we do not know what has happened to this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt.'

At that time, they made a calf and offered a sacrifice to the idol, rejoicing in the works of their hands.

But God turned away and gave them up to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: 'Did you bring me offerings and sacrifices for forty years in the wilderness, house of Israel?'

Stivnakkede og uomskårne på hjerte og ører! Dere står alltid imot Den hellige ånd, slik deres fedre gjorde, slik gjør også dere.

You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are always resisting the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors did.

Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, and now you have betrayed and murdered him—

you who received the law through angels but have not obeyed it.

Da de hørte dette, ble de harme i sitt hjerte, og de skar tenner mot ham.

When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him.

But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.

He said, 'Look, I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.'

Men de ropte med høy røst og holdt seg for ørene og stormet alle som én mot ham.

At this they covered their ears and, shouting at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him.

They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul.

While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.'

Then he fell to his knees and cried out, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them.' When he had said this, he fell asleep.
