After these events, King Ahasuerus promoted Haman, the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, elevating him and setting his position above all the officials who were with him.

Alle kongens tjenere som var ved kongens port, knelte og bøyde seg for Haman, for slik hadde kongen befalt. Men Mordekai knelte ikke og bøyde seg heller ikke for ham.

All the king's servants who were at the king's gate would bow down and pay homage to Haman, for so the king had commanded concerning him. But Mordecai would not bow or pay homage.

Kongens tjenere som var ved porten sa til Mordekai: «Hvorfor overtrer du kongens befaling?»

Then the king's servants who were at the gate asked Mordecai, "Why do you transgress the king's command?"

Da de dag etter dag talte til ham uten at han adlød dem, meldte de dette til Haman for å se om Mordekais ord ville holde, siden han hadde fortalt dem at han var jøde.

Day after day they spoke to him, but he refused to listen to them. So they reported the matter to Haman to see whether Mordecai’s behavior would stand, since he had told them that he was a Jew.

When Haman saw that Mordecai would not bow down or pay homage to him, he was filled with rage.

Men han foraktet tanken på å legge hånd på bare Mordekai. Fordi de hadde fortalt ham hvilket folk Mordekai tilhørte, søkte Haman å utslette alle jødene, Mordekais folk, i hele kong Ahasverus' rike.

But he considered it beneath him to attack Mordecai alone, for they had told him about Mordecai’s people. So Haman sought to destroy all the Jews throughout the kingdom of Ahasuerus, the people of Mordecai.

I den første måneden, som er måneden nisan, i det tolvte året av kong Ahasverus’ regjering, kastet de pur, det vil si lodd, for å fastsette dag og måned, og loddet falt på den tolvte måned, som er måneden adar.

In the first month, the month of Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, they cast Pur (that is, the lot) before Haman for each day and each month, until the twelfth month, the month of Adar.

Haman sa til kong Ahasverus: «Det er et folk som er spredt og adskilt blant folkene i alle provinsene i ditt rike. Deres lover er forskjellige fra alle andre folks, og kongens lover følger de ikke. Derfor er det ikke passende for kongen å la dem være.

Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus, "There is a certain people scattered and separated among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom. Their laws differ from those of every other people, and they do not obey the king’s laws. Therefore, it is not beneficial for the king to tolerate them.

If it pleases the king, let a decree be written to destroy them, and I will weigh out ten thousand talents of silver into the hands of those who carry out the work, to be deposited in the king’s treasuries."

Kongen tok sin signetring av hånden og ga den til Haman, sønn av Hammedata, agagitten, jødenes fiende.

So the king removed his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman, the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.

Kongen sa til Haman: «Sølvet er ditt, og folket også, gjør med dem som du finner godt.»

The king said to Haman, "The silver is given to you, as well as the people, to do with them as it seems good to you."

Så ble kongens skrivere kalt inn på den trettende dagen i den første måneden, og det ble skrevet nøyaktig slik Haman befalte, til kongens satraper og til høvdingene som var over hver provins, og til lederne for hvert folk, til hver provins på dens eget skriftspråk og til hvert folk på deres eget språk. Det ble skrevet i kong Ahasverus’ navn, og det ble forseglet med kongens signetring.

On the thirteenth day of the first month, the king’s scribes were summoned and an edict was written according to all that Haman commanded. It was addressed to the satraps of the king, to the governors of each province, and to the officials of every people, to each province in its script and to each people in its language. It was written in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed with the king’s signet ring.

Brevene ble sendt med bud til alle kongens provinser for å ødelegge, drepe og utslette alle jødene, unge og gamle, barn og kvinner, på én dag, den trettende dagen i den tolvte måneden, som er måneden adar, og for å plyndre deres eiendeler.

Letters were sent by couriers to all the king’s provinces, ordering the destruction, killing, and annihilation of all the Jews—young and old, children and women—in a single day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, and to plunder their possessions.

En kopi av skrivelsen, som skulle utgjøre en lov i hver provins, ble gjort kjent for alle folkene, for at de skulle være klare til denne dagen.

A copy of the edict was to be issued as a law in every province and made known to all the peoples, so that they would be ready for that day.

Budene drog ut i hast på kongens ordre, og dekretet ble kunngjort i borgen Susa. Kongen og Haman satte seg for å drikke, men byen Susa var forvirret.

The couriers went out hurriedly by order of the king, and the decree was issued in the citadel of Susa. And while the king and Haman sat down to drink, the city of Susa was in confusion.
