The Lord said to Moses, "See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet."

You shall speak everything I command you, and your brother Aaron will speak to Pharaoh, so that he may let the Israelites go out of his land.

But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and I will multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt.

Pharaoh will not listen to you, so I will stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring my armies—my people, the Israelites—out of the land of Egypt with great acts of judgment.

Da skal egypterne vite at jeg er Herren når jeg rekker ut min hånd over Egypt, og fører israelittene ut fra deres midte.

The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out from among them.

Moses og Aron gjorde som Herren hadde befalt dem.

Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord commanded them.

Moses var åtti år gammel, og Aron var åtti-tre år gammel da de talte til farao.

Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three years old when they spoke to Pharaoh.

Herren sa til Moses og Aron:

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron,

'Når farao ber dere om å utføre et under, skal du si til Aron: Ta staven din og kast den foran farao, så skal den bli til en slange.'

"When Pharaoh says to you, 'Perform a miracle,' you shall say to Aaron, 'Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh, and it will become a serpent.'"

Da gikk Moses og Aron til farao og gjorde som Herren hadde befalt. Aron kastet sin stav foran farao og hans tjenere, og den ble til en slange.

So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord had commanded. Aaron threw down his staff before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent.

Farao kalte også til seg sine vise menn og trollmenn, og de egyptiske magere gjorde det samme med sine hemmelige kunster.

Pharaoh then summoned the wise men and sorcerers, and the magicians of Egypt did the same things by their secret arts.

Hver av dem kastet sin stav, og stavene ble til slanger. Men Arons stav slukte deres staver.

Each one threw down his staff, and they became serpents. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs.

Likevel forherdet faraos hjerte seg, og han lyttet ikke til dem, slik Herren hadde sagt.

Yet Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.

Herren sa til Moses: 'Faraos hjerte er hardt. Han nekter å la folket gå.'

Then the Lord said to Moses, "Pharaoh’s heart is stubborn; he refuses to let the people go.

Gå til farao om morgenen når han går ut til vannet. Stå og vent på ham ved elvebredden, og ta staven som ble til en slange i hånden din.

"Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes down to the water. Wait to meet him by the riverbank, and take in your hand the staff that was turned into a snake.

Og du skal si til ham: 'Herren, hebreernes Gud, har sendt meg til deg og sagt: Slipp mitt folk, så de kan tjene meg i ørkenen. Men så langt har du ikke lyttet.'

Then say to him, 'The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to say to you: Let my people go so that they may worship me in the wilderness. But so far you have not listened.'

Så sier Herren: 'Ved dette skal du vite at jeg er Herren. Se, jeg vil slå på vannet i Nilen med staven i min hånd, og det skal bli til blod.'

This is what the Lord says: 'By this you will know that I am the Lord. With the staff that is in my hand, I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will be turned into blood.'

Da skal fisken i Nilen dø, og elven skal stinke. Egypterne vil ikke kunne drikke vann fra Nilen.'

The fish in the Nile will die, the river will stink, and the Egyptians will not be able to drink water from the Nile.

Herren sa til Moses: 'Si til Aron: Ta staven din og rekk ut hånden over alle Egyptens vann, over elvene, kanalene, dammene og alle vannsamlingene, så de kan bli til blod. Blodet skal være gjennom hele Egypt, også i trau av tre og stein.'

Then the Lord said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt—over their rivers, canals, ponds, and all their reservoirs—and they will turn to blood. There will be blood throughout the land of Egypt, even in wooden and stone containers.'"

Moses og Aron gjorde som Herren hadde befalt. Aron løftet staven og slo på vannet i Nilen foran øynene til farao og hans tjenere, og alt vannet i elven ble til blod.

Moses and Aaron did as the Lord had commanded. Aaron raised his staff and struck the water of the Nile in the sight of Pharaoh and his officials, and all the water in the river was turned into blood.

Fisken i Nilen døde, og elven stank, så egypterne ikke kunne drikke vannet fra elven. Det var blod over hele Egypt.

The fish in the Nile died, the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water, and blood was everywhere in Egypt.

De egyptiske magere gjorde det samme med sine hemmelige kunster, og faraos hjerte ble hardt. Han hørte ikke på dem, slik Herren hadde sagt.

But the magicians of Egypt did the same thing by their secret arts, and Pharaoh’s heart remained hardened. He would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said.

Farao vendte tilbake til huset sitt, og la ikke denne hendelsen på hjertet.

Pharaoh turned and went back to his palace. He did not take this to heart either.

Hele Egypt gravde rundt omkring Nilen etter vann de kunne drikke, for de kunne ikke drikke fra Nilelven.

All the Egyptians dug along the Nile to get drinking water because they could not drink the water from the river.

Sju dager gikk etter at Herren hadde slått Nilen.

Seven days passed after the Lord struck the Nile.

Da sa Herren til Moses: 'Gå til farao og si til ham: 'Så sier Herren: La mitt folk dra, så de kan tjene meg.'

Then the Lord said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and tell him: 'This is what the Lord says: Let my people go so that they may worship me.'"

Hvis du nekter å la dem dra, vil jeg plage hele ditt land med frosker.

If you refuse to let them go, I will strike your entire country with frogs.

Nilen skal vrimle av frosker, og de skal komme opp og gå inn i huset ditt, soveværelset ditt, senga di, husene til dine tjenere, folket ditt, ovnene dine og deigtrauene dine.

The Nile will teem with frogs. They will come up into your palace, your bedroom, onto your bed, into your officials’ houses, among your people, into your ovens, and into your kneading bowls.

Froskene skal komme opp over deg, folket ditt og alle dine tjenere.'

The frogs will come up on you, your people, and all your officials.
