Troen er visshet om det vi håper, bevis om det vi ikke ser.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

For ved den fikk de gamle godt vitnesbyrd.

For by it the ancients were commended.

Ved tro forstår vi at verden ble formet ved Guds ord, så det synlige ikke ble til av det som sees.

By faith we understand that the universe was formed by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

Ved tro bar Abel fram for Gud et bedre offer enn Kain. Ved det fikk han vitnesbyrd om at han var rettferdig, for Gud vitnet om gavene hans. Og ved troen taler han ennå, selv om han er død.

By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God testifying about his gifts; and through faith, even though he is dead, he still speaks.

Ved tro ble Enok tatt bort, så han ikke skulle se døden, og han ble ikke funnet, fordi Gud hadde tatt ham bort. For før han ble tatt bort, fikk han dette vitnesbyrdet: at han hadde behaget Gud.

By faith Enoch was taken up so that he would not see death, and he was not found, because God took him up. For before he was taken up, he was commended as one who had pleased God.

Uten tro er det umulig å behage Gud, for den som kommer til Gud, må tro at han er til og at han lønner dem som søker ham.

And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever comes to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

Ved tro ble Noa, da han fikk guddommelig advarsel om det som ennå ikke var sett, grepet av gudfryktig frykt og bygde en ark til frelse for sitt hus. Ved den fordømte han verden, og ble arving til den rettferdighet som er i troen.

By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverent fear prepared an ark for the salvation of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed and went out to a place he was to receive as an inheritance, and he went out, not knowing where he was going.

By faith he sojourned in the land of promise as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise.

By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered Him faithful who had promised.

Derfor ble det også, fra en, som var så godt som død, født så mange som stjernene i himmelen, som sanden ved havets bredd, utallige.

And so from one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.

All these people died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them from afar and been persuaded of them, and having embraced them, they openly declared that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.

Hadde de hatt i tankene det landet de dro ut fra, hadde de nok hatt tid til å vende tilbake.

If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.

Men nå ønsker de et bedre, det vil si et himmelsk. Derfor skammer ikke Gud seg over dem, ved å bli kalt deres Gud, for han har gjort i stand en by for dem.

But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.

Ved tro bar Abraham fram Isak som offer da han ble prøvet. Han som hadde mottatt løftene, bar fram sin enbårne.

By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac. He who had received the promises was ready to offer his only son,

Til ham var det sagt: "Gjennom Isak skal din slekt kalles."

even though it was said to him, 'Through Isaac your descendants will be named.'

Han regnet med at Gud også er mektig til å oppreise fra de døde. Derfor fikk han ham også tilbake som en lignelse.

Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and in a sense, he did receive Isaac back from death as a symbol.

Ved tro velsignet Isak Jakob og Esau angående det som skulle komme.

By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning the future.

Ved tro velsignet Jakob hver av Josefs sønner da han var døende, og tilba mens han lente seg på toppen av staven sin.

By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the anger of the king, for he persevered as though seeing the one who is invisible.

quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, gained strength out of weakness, became mighty in battle, and routed foreign armies.

Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might gain a better resurrection.

Still others experienced mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment.

They were stoned, they were sawed in two, and they were killed with the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted, and mistreated.

The world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts, and on mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground.

And all of these, though they were commended for their faith, did not receive what was promised.

Gud hadde noe bedre for oss, slik at de ikke skulle nå fullendelsen uten oss.

Since God had provided something better for us, so that they would not be made perfect without us.
