I begynnelsen av kongedømmet til Jehojakim, sønn av Josjia, konge av Juda, kom dette ordet fra Herren som sa:

At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the LORD:

Så sier Herren: Stå i forgården til Herrens hus og tal til alle byene i Juda som kommer for å tilbe i Herrens hus alle de ordene jeg har befalt deg å tale til dem. Ikke utelat noe ord.

The LORD says, 'Stand in the courtyard of the LORD's house and declare to all the cities of Judah, who come to worship in the LORD's house, all the words I command you to speak to them. Do not omit a single word.'

Kanskje vil de høre og vende seg fra sitt onde vei, slik at jeg vil angre på den onde ulykken jeg har tenkt å gjøre mot dem på grunn av det onde i deres gjerninger.

Perhaps they will listen and turn, each one, from their evil ways. Then I will relent concerning the disaster that I plan to bring on them because of the evil they have done.

Og si til dem: Så sier Herren: Om dere ikke hører på meg, slik at dere følger min lov som jeg har gitt dere,

And you shall say to them, 'The LORD says: If you do not listen to Me and follow My law which I have set before you...

...and listen to the words of My servants the prophets, whom I have persistently sent to you (though you have not listened),

så vil jeg gjøre dette huset som Sjilo og denne byen til en forbannelse for alle jordens nasjoner.

then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city an object of cursing among all the nations on earth.'

Prestene, profetene og hele folket hørte Jeremia tale disse ordene i Herrens hus.

And the priests, the prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD.

Og det skjedde, da Jeremia hadde sluttet å tale alt det Herren hadde befalt ham å tale til hele folket, at prestene og profetene og hele folket tok tak i ham og sa: Du må dø!

And when Jeremiah finished speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak to all the people, the priests, the prophets, and all the people seized him, saying, 'You shall surely die!'

'Why have you prophesied in the name of the LORD, saying, “This house will become like Shiloh, and this city will be desolate, without inhabitants”?' And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the LORD's house.

Da hørte lederne av Juda disse ordene, og de gikk opp fra kongens hus til Herrens hus og satte seg ved inngangen til Herrens nye port.

When the officials of Judah heard these things, they went up from the king’s house to the house of the LORD and sat at the entrance of the New Gate of the LORD's house.

Prestene og profetene sa til lederne og hele folket: Denne mannens dom er dødsdom fordi han har profetert mot denne byen, slik dere har hørt med egne ører.

Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people, 'This man deserves the death sentence, for he has prophesied against this city as you have heard with your own ears.'

Da sa Jeremia til alle lederne og til hele folket: Herren har sendt meg for å profetere mot dette huset og mot denne byen alle de ordene dere har hørt.

But Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people, 'The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard.'

Og nå, gjør godt i deres veier og deres gjerninger, og hør Herrens, deres Guds, røst, så vil Herren angre på den ulykken han har talt mot dere.

'Now, therefore, amend your ways and your deeds, and obey the voice of the LORD your God. Then the LORD will relent concerning the disaster that He has pronounced against you.'

Men jeg er i deres hånd, gjør med meg som det synes godt og rett i deres øyne.

'But as for me, I am in your hands; do with me whatever you think is good and right in your eyes.'

Men vit for visst at om dere dreper meg, vil dere bringe uskyldig blod over dere selv, over denne byen og over dens innbyggere, for i sannhet har Herren sendt meg til dere for å tale alle disse ordene i ørene deres.

But you should certainly know that if you put me to death, you are bringing innocent blood upon yourselves, this city, and its inhabitants, for truly the LORD has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing.

Da sa lederne og hele folket til prestene og profetene: Det er ingen dødsdom mot denne mannen, for han har talt til oss i navnet til Herren vår Gud.

Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and prophets, 'This man does not deserve the death penalty, for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God.'

Da reiste noen av de eldste i landet seg og sa til hele forsamlingen av folket:

And some of the elders of the land stood up and spoke to the whole assembly of the people, saying:

Mika, morashtitten, profeterte i Hiskias tid, kongen av Juda, og sa til hele Judas folk: Så sier Herren over hærskarene: Sion skal bli som en åker, og Jerusalem skal bli til ruinhauger, og tempelhøyden til skogsrygger.

'Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah, king of Judah, and said to all the people of Judah, “This is what the LORD of Hosts says: Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a pile of ruins, and the temple mount will become overgrown with thickets.”'

Drepte Hiskia, Judas konge, og hele Juda ham ikke? Fryktet han ikke Herren og tryglet om Herrens nåde, så Herren angret på den ulykken han hadde talt mot dem? Men vi gjør et stort onde mot våre liv.

Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear the LORD and plead for His favor? And the LORD relented concerning the disaster that He pronounced against them. But we are about to bring a terrible disaster upon ourselves!

Det var også en mann som profeterte i Herrens navn, Uria, sønn av Sjemaja fra Kirjat-Jearim. Han profeterte mot denne byen og mot dette landet i ord som lignet Jeremias' ord.

Now there was another man who prophesied in the name of the LORD, Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. He prophesied against this city and this land in words exactly like those of Jeremiah.

Da kong Jehojakim, alle hans mektige menn og alle lederne hørte denne mannens ord, søkte kongen å drepe ham. Da Uria hørte det, ble han redd og flyktet til Egypt.

When King Jehoiakim, all his mighty men, and all the officials heard his words, the king sought to put him to death. But Uriah heard about it, and he was afraid, so he fled and went to Egypt.

Da sendte kong Jehojakim menn til Egypt, Elnatan, sønn av Akbor, og noen menn med ham til Egypt.

Then King Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt: Elnathan son of Achbor and some others went with him.

De hentet Uria opp fra Egypt og førte ham til kong Jehojakim, som drepte ham med sverdet og kastet liket hans i gravene til folket.

They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him struck down with the sword and threw his body into the burial place of the common people.

Men Ahikam, sønn av Sjafan, sto ved Jeremias' side, så han ikke ble overgitt i folkets hender for å bli drept.

Nevertheless, Ahikam son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah, so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.
