Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu each took his own censer, put fire in it, placed incense on it, and offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them to do.

Da kom det ild ut fra Herren og fortærte dem, så de døde for Herren.

Fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD.

Da sa Moses til Aron: «Dette er det Herren har sagt: Ved dem som kommer nær meg, vil jeg helliggjøres, og for hele folket vil jeg vises som den ærefulle.» Og Aron var stille.

Then Moses said to Aaron, 'This is what the LORD has said: I will be shown as holy to those who draw near me, and I will be honored in the sight of all the people.' And Aaron remained silent.

Moses kalte på Mishael og Elzafan, sønner av Arons onkel Uzziel, og sa til dem: «Kom nær og bær deres brødre bort fra helligdommen utenfor leiren.»

Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Aaron's uncle Uzziel, and said to them, 'Come here and carry your relatives away from the front of the sanctuary to a place outside the camp.'

De kom nær og bar dem bort i deres tunikaer utenfor leiren, slik Moses hadde sagt.

So they came forward and carried them out of the camp by their tunics, as Moses had instructed.

Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, 'Do not uncover your heads or tear your clothes in mourning, or you will die, and the LORD’s wrath will come upon the entire community. However, your relatives—all the house of Israel—may mourn for those the LORD burned.

«Og dere skal ikke gå bort fra inngangen til Åpenbaringsteltet, for da skal dere dø, siden Herrens salvingsolje er over dere.» Og de gjorde som Moses sa.

Do not leave the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, or you will die, for the LORD’s anointing oil is on you.' So they did as Moses said.

Og Herren talte til Aron og sa:

The LORD spoke to Aaron, saying,

«Vin eller sterk drikk skal du og dine sønner med deg ikke drikke når dere går inn i Åpenbaringsteltet, så dere ikke skal dø. Dette er en evig forskrift gjennom alle slekter.

'Do not drink wine or strong drink, you or your sons, when you enter the Tent of Meeting, or you will die. This is a permanent statute for all your generations.

For å skille mellom hellig og uhellig, mellom urent og rent.

You are to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean.

Og for å lære Israels barn alle de lover som Herren har talt til dem ved Moses.»

You must teach the Israelites all the statutes that the LORD has given to them through Moses.'

Moses talte til Aron og til Eleazar og Itamar, hans gjenværende sønner: «Ta matofferet som er igjen av Herrens ildofre, og spis det usyret ved alteret, for det er høyhellig.

Moses said to Aaron and to his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, 'Take the grain offering that remains from the LORD’s offerings by fire and eat it prepared without yeast beside the altar, for it is most holy.

Dere skal spise det på et hellig sted, for det er din og dine sønners rett av Herrens ildofre, for slik er jeg befalt.

You are to eat it in a holy place because it is your portion and your sons’ portion from the offerings made by fire to the LORD, for this is what I was commanded.'

Og brystet som bæres frem som en svingeoffer og låret som en heloffer, skal dere spise på et rent sted, du og dine sønner og døtre med deg, for det er gitt deg som din rett og dine sønners rett av Israels sønners fredsofre.

You, your sons, and your daughters are to eat the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering in a place that is ceremonially clean. These have been given to you and your descendants as your portion from the Israelites' peace offerings.

Låret som en heloffer og brystet som en svingeoffer skal bringes sammen med fettstykkene som blir brent, for å frembære et svingeoffer for Herrens åsyn, og det skal være ditt og dine sønners rett til en evig lov, som Herren har befalt.

The thigh of the heave offering and the breast of the wave offering must be brought with the fat portions of the fire offerings to present as a wave offering before the LORD. They will belong to you and your descendants as a perpetual statute, just as the LORD commanded.

Og Moses lette grundig etter syndofferbukken, men se, den var brent. Da ble han sint på Eleazar og Itamar, Arons gjenværende sønner, og sa:

Then Moses inquired diligently about the goat of the sin offering and discovered it had been burned up. He was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's remaining sons, and said,

«Hvorfor har dere ikke spist syndofferet på det hellige stedet? For det er høyhellig, og han har gitt det dere for å bære menighetens synd bort og gjøre soning for dem for Herrens åsyn.

Why didn’t you eat the sin offering in the sanctuary area? It is most holy, and it was given to you to take away the guilt of the congregation and to make atonement for them before the LORD.

For se, blodet er ikke brakt inn i det hellige stedet. Dere skulle ha spist det på det hellige stedet, som jeg er befalt.»

Since its blood was not brought inside the sanctuary, you should have eaten it in the holy place as I commanded.

Men Aron sa til Moses: «Se, i dag har de båret frem sitt syndoffer og sitt brennoffer for Herrens åsyn, og slike ting har skjedd meg. Og jeg har spist syndofferet i dag, ville det ha vært godt i Herrens øyne?»

But Aaron replied to Moses, 'Behold, today they presented their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD, and such things as these have happened to me. Would it have been pleasing to the LORD if I had eaten the sin offering today?'

Da Moses hørte dette, var det godt i hans øyne.

When Moses heard this, he was satisfied.
