Balaam said to Balak, 'Stand beside your burnt offering while I go. Perhaps the LORD will meet me, and whatever He shows me I will tell you.' Then he went to a barren height.

God met with Balaam, and Balaam said to Him, 'I have prepared seven altars, and on each altar I have placed a bull and a ram.'

The LORD put a word in Balaam’s mouth and said, 'Go back to Balak and speak this to him.'

He returned to Balak, and there he was, standing beside his burnt offering along with all the officials of Moab.

Så fremsa han sitt budskap: 'Fra Aram førte Balak meg, Moabs konge fra fjellene i øst: 'Kom og forbann Jakob for meg, kom og forbann Israel!'

Then Balaam uttered his oracle and said: 'From Aram Balak brought me, the king of Moab from the eastern mountains: "Come, curse Jacob for me; come, denounce Israel."'

Hvordan kan jeg forbanne den Gud ikke har forbannet? Hvordan kan jeg fordømme når Herren ikke har fordømt?

How can I curse those whom God has not cursed? How can I denounce those the LORD has not denounced?

For fra toppen av klippene ser jeg ham, og fra høydene skuer jeg ham: Se, et folk som bor for seg selv og ikke regner seg blant folkene.

For from the top of the rocks I see them, from the hills I behold them; they are a people who live apart and do not consider themselves among the nations.

Hvem kan telle Jakobs støv eller tallfeste Israels mengde? Måtte min sjel dø de rettferdiges død, og måtte min ende være som deres.

Who can count the dust of Jacob or number a fourth of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and may my final end be like theirs!

Balak said to Balaam, 'What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies, but you have done nothing but bless them!'

He answered, 'Must I not speak what the LORD puts in my mouth?'

Balak sa til ham: 'Kom nå, la oss gå til et annet sted hvorfra du kan se dem; du vil bare se ytterkanten av dem, ikke dem alle. Forbann dem derfra for meg.'

Then Balak said to him, 'Please come with me to another place where you can see them. You will see only a part of them, not all of them. From there, curse them for me.'

So he took him to the field of Zophim on the top of Pisgah. There he built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.

Balaam said to Balak, 'Stay here beside your burnt offering while I meet the LORD over there.'

The LORD met with Balaam and put a message in his mouth, saying, 'Return to Balak and speak these words.'

So Balaam returned to Balak, who was standing beside his burnt offering with the officials of Moab. Balak asked him, 'What did the LORD say?'

Then Balaam proclaimed his oracle, saying: 'Stand up, Balak, and listen; hear me, son of Zippor!'

Gud er ikke et menneske, så han lyver, eller et menneskes barn, så han angrer. Har han sagt det, vil han ikke gjøre det? Har han talt, vil han ikke fullføre det?

'God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?'

'Behold, I have received a command to bless; He has blessed, and I cannot change it.'

Han har ikke sett noe ondt i Jakob, ikke har han sett noe ondt i Israel. Herren deres Gud er med dem, og Kongens jubelrop er blant dem.

'He has not observed iniquity in Jacob or seen trouble in Israel. The LORD their God is with them; the shout of a king is among them.'

Gud som førte dem ut av Egypt, for ham er de som den ville oksens horn.

'God brought them out of Egypt; they have the strength of a wild ox.'

For det er ingen trolldom imot Jakob, og ingen spådom mot Israel. Nå skal det sies om Jakob og Israel, hva Gud har gjort!

'There is no divination against Jacob, no sorcery against Israel. It will now be said of Jacob and of Israel: "See what God has done!"'

Se, et folk som reiser seg som en løve, opphever seg som en ung løve, han legger seg ikke før han har fortæret byttet og drukket blodet av de slagne.

'The people rise like a lioness; they rouse themselves like a lion. They will not lie down until they devour their prey and drink the blood of the slain.'

Balak sa til Bileam: 'Ikke forbann dem, ikke velsign dem heller!'

Then Balak said to Balaam, 'If you won’t curse them for me, then at least don’t bless them!'

But Balaam replied, 'Didn’t I tell you that I must do whatever the LORD says?'

Then Balak said to Balaam, 'Come, let me take you to another place. Perhaps it will please God to let you curse them for me from there.'

So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, which overlooks the wasteland.
