Elia fra Tisjbe, en av de som bodde som innflyttere i Gilead, sa til Ahab: «Så sant Herren, Israels Gud, lever, han som jeg står for, skal det ikke komme dugg eller regn i disse årene, uten på mitt ord.»

And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the sojourners of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As Jehovah, the God of Israel, liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

Herrens ord kom til ham og sa:

And the word of Jehovah came unto him, saying,

«Dra av sted herfra, vend deg østover og skjul deg ved bekken Kerit, som ligger øst for Jordan.

Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.

Der skal du drikke av bekken, og jeg har pålagt ravnene å gi deg mat der.»

And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

Så gikk han av sted og gjorde som Herren hadde sagt, og han dro og bodde ved bekken Kerit, som ligger øst for Jordan.

So he went and did according unto the word of Jehovah; for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.

Ravnene brakte ham brød og kjøtt om morgenen, og brød og kjøtt om kvelden, og han drakk av bekken.

And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

Etter en tid tørket bekken ut, for det regnet ikke i landet.

And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.

Herrens ord kom til ham og sa:

And the word of Jehovah came unto him, saying,

«Gå nå til Sarepta, som hører til Sidon, og bli der. Jeg har pålagt en enke der å sørge for deg.»

Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Sidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain thee.

Så dro han til Sarepta. Da han kom til byporten, var det en enke der som samlet ved. Han ropte til henne og sa: «Hent litt vann til meg i en krukke, så jeg kan få drikke.»

So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

Mens hun gikk for å hente det, ropte han etter henne: «Ta med et stykke brød til meg også!»

And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand.

Men hun svarte: «Så sant Herren din Gud lever, jeg har ikke noe kornbrød, bare en håndfull mel i krukken og litt olje i en krukke. Nå samler jeg noen vedpinner, så jeg kan gå hjem og lage til for meg selv og sønnen min. Vi skal spise det og så dø.»

And she said, As Jehovah thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but a handful of meal in the jar, and a little oil in the cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

Da sa Elia til henne: «Frykt ikke! Gå og gjør som du har sagt, men lag først en liten kake til meg og bring den til meg. Deretter kan du lage noe til deg selv og din sønn.

And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said; but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it forth unto me, and afterward make for thee and for thy son.

For så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Melkrukken skal ikke bli tom, og oljekrukken skal ikke mangle før den dagen Herren sender regn over jorden.»

For thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, The jar of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that Jehovah sendeth rain upon the earth.

Hun gikk da og gjorde som Elia hadde sagt; og hun og han og hennes hus spiste i mange dager.

And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat `many' days.

Melkrukken ble ikke tom, og det manglet ikke olje i krukken, etter Herrens ord som han hadde talt ved Elia.

The jar of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake by Elijah.

Senere ble sønnen til kvinnen, som eide huset, syk, og sykdommen ble så alvorlig at han sluttet å puste.

And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.

Da sa hun til Elia: «Hva har jeg med deg å gjøre, du Guds mann? Har du kommet for å gi meg min synd i minne, og for å drepe min sønn?»

And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? thou art come unto me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son!

Men han sa til henne: «Gi meg sønnen din.» Så tok han ham fra hennes arm og bar ham opp til det rommet hvor han bodde, og la ham på sin egen seng.

And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the chamber, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

Så ropte han til Herren og sa: «Herre min Gud, har du også ført ulykke over denne enken jeg bor hos, ved å la hennes sønn dø?»

And he cried unto Jehovah, and said, O Jehovah my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?

Han strakte seg tre ganger over barnet og ropte til Herren og sa: «Herre min Gud, la dette barnets sjel vende tilbake til ham.»

And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto Jehovah, and said, O Jehovah my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again.

Herren hørte Elias bønn, og barnets sjel vendte tilbake til ham, og han ble levende igjen.

And Jehovah hearkened unto the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

Elia tok barnet, bar ham ned fra rommet og inn i huset, og ga ham til hans mor. Elia sa: «Se, din sønn lever.»

And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother; and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.

Da sa kvinnen til Elia: «Nå vet jeg at du er en Guds mann, og at Herrens ord i din munn er sannhet.»

And the woman said to Elijah, Now I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of Jehovah in thy mouth is truth.
