1 Etter mange dager kom Herrens ord til Elia, i det tredje året, og sa: Gå og vis deg for Akab, så vil jeg sende regn over jorden.

And it came to pass after many days, that the word of Jehovah came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

2 Elia gikk for å vise seg for Akab. Hungersnøden var stor i Samaria.

And Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And the famine was sore in Samaria.

3 Akab kalte til seg Obadja, som var over husholdningen. (Obadja hadde stor frykt for Herren:

And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared Jehovah greatly:

4 Da Jesabel utryddet Herrens profeter, tok Obadja hundre profeter og skjulte dem, femti og femti i hver sin hule, og forsynte dem med brød og vann.)

for it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

5 Og Akab sa til Obadja: Gå gjennom landet til alle vannkilder og til alle bekker; kanskje finner vi gress og kan holde hestene og muldyrene i live, så vi slipper å miste alle dyrene.

And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go through the land, unto all the fountains of water, and unto all the brooks: peradventure we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.

6 Så delte de landet mellom seg for å gå gjennom det: Akab gikk en vei alene, og Obadja gikk en annen vei alene.

So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

7 Mens Obadja var på veien, møtte Elia ham. Han kjente ham igjen og falt på ansiktet og sa: Er det deg, min herre Elia?

And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Is it thou, my lord Elijah?

8 Han svarte: Det er meg. Gå og si til din herre: Se, Elia er her.

And he answered him, It is I: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah `is here'.

9 Obadja sa: Hva har jeg syndet siden du overgir din tjener i Akabs hånd, for at han skal drepe meg?

And he said, Wherein have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?

10 Så sant Herren din Gud lever, det er ikke noe rike eller noen nasjon hvor min herre ikke har sendt etter deg. Når de sa: Han er ikke her, tok han en ed av rike og nasjon på at de ikke hadde funnet deg.

As Jehovah thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not here, he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

11 Og nå sier du: Gå og si til din herre: Se, Elia er her.

And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah `is here'.

12 Så snart jeg går fra deg, vil Herrens Ånd føre deg dit jeg ikke vet, og når jeg går og sier til Akab, og han ikke finner deg, vil han drepe meg. Men din tjener har fryktet Herren fra ungdommen av.

And it will come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of Jehovah will carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he will slay me: but I thy servant fear Jehovah from my youth.

13 Er det ikke blitt fortalt min herre hva jeg gjorde da Jesabel drepte Herrens profeter? Jeg skjulte hundre av Herrens profeter, femti og femti i hver sin hule, og forsynte dem med brød og vann.

Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of Jehovah, how I hid a hundred men of Jehovah's prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

14 Og nå sier du: Gå og si til din herre: Se, Elia er her; og han vil drepe meg.

And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah `is here'; and he will slay me.

15 Elia sa: Så sant Herren, hærskarenes Gud, lever, som jeg står for, i dag skal jeg vise meg for ham.

And Elijah said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to-day.

16 Da gikk Obadja for å møte Akab og fortalte ham dette, og Akab gikk for å møte Elia.

So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

17 Så da Akab så Elia, sa Akab til ham: Er det deg, du som fører ulykke over Israel?

And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Is it thou, thou troubler of Israel?

18 Han svarte: Jeg har ikke ført ulykke over Israel; men du og din fars hus, fordi dere har forlatt Herrens bud og fulgt Baalene.

And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baalim.

19 Send nå bud og samle hele Israel til meg på Karmelfjellet, og Baals fire hundre og femti profeter, og Asjeras fire hundre profeter, som spiser ved Jesabels bord.

Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, that eat at Jezebel's table.

20 Så sendte Akab bud til alle Israels barn og samlet profetene på Karmelfjellet.

So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

21 Elia gikk frem for hele folket og sa: Hvor lenge vil dere vingle mellom to meninger? Hvis Herren er Gud, følg ham; men hvis Baal er det, så følg ham. Folket svarte ham ikke et ord.

And Elijah came near unto all the people, and said, How long go ye limping between the two sides? if Jehovah be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

22 Da sa Elia til folket: Jeg, bare jeg, er igjen som en Herrens profet; men Baals profeter er fire hundre og femti mann.

Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, am left a prophet of Jehovah; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

23 La dem nå gi oss to okser; de kan velge seg en okse og skjære den i stykker og legge den på veden uten å tenne ild under; jeg vil stelle til den andre oksen og legge den på veden uten å tenne ild under.

Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under.

24 Dere skal påkalle deres guds navn, og jeg vil påkalle Herrens navn. Den Gud som svarer med ild, han er Gud. Og hele folket svarte og sa: Det er godt talt.

And call ye on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Jehovah; and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

25 Elia sa da til Baals profeter: Velg dere en okse og stell først til, for dere er mange; påkall så deres guds navn, men start ikke ild under.

And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under.

26 De tok oksen de hadde fått, stelte til og påkalte Baals navn fra morgen til middag: Baal, hør oss! Men det var ingen stemme og ingen som svarte. De danset omkring alteret som de hadde laget.

And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped about the altar which was made.

27 Ved middagstid begynte Elia å spotte dem: Rop høyere! Han er jo en gud. Kanskje han sitter og tenker, eller han har gått bort, eller han er på reise, eller kanskje han sover og må vekkes.

And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god: either he is musing, or he is gone aside, or he is on a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth and must be awaked.

28 Så ropte de høyere og skar seg som de pleide, med sverd og spyd, så blodet fløt over dem.

And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lances, till the blood gushed out upon them.

29 Da det ble middag, fortsatte de frem til tiden for matofferet, men det kom verken noen stemme, noe svar eller noen som hørte.

And it was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the `evening' oblation; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

30 Da sa Elia til hele folket: Kom nær til meg. Hele folket kom nær til ham. Han reparerte Herrens alter som var revet ned.

And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me; and all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of Jehovah that was thrown down.

31 Elia tok tolv steiner etter antall av Jakobs barns stammer, for ham var Herrens ord kommet, og sagt: Israel skal være ditt navn.

And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of Jehovah came, saying, Israel shall be thy name.

32 Han bygde et alter i Herrens navn med steinene, gravde en grøft rundt alteret, så stor at den kunne romme to sekkemål med såkorn.

And with the stones he built an altar in the name of Jehovah; and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

33 Han la veden i orden, skar oksen i stykker og la den på veden. Han sa: Fyll fire krukker med vann og hell det over brennofferet og veden.

And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the wood.

34 Han sa: Gjør det igjen. Og de gjorde det igjen. Og han sa: Gjør det en tredje gang. Og de gjorde det en tredje gang.

And he said, Do it the second time; and they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time; and they did it the third time.

35 Vannet rant rundt omkring alteret. Han fylte også grøften med vann.

And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

36 Da det ble tid for matofferet, trådte profeten Elia frem og sa: Herre, Abrahams, Isaks og Israels Gud, la det bli kjent i dag at du er Gud i Israel, og at jeg er din tjener, og at jeg har gjort alt dette etter ditt ord.

And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the `evening' oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

37 Svar meg, Herre, svar meg, så dette folket kan vite at du, Herre, er Gud, og at du har vendt deres hjerte tilbake.

Hear me, O Jehovah, hear me, that this people may know that thou, Jehovah, art God, and `that' thou hast turned their heart back again.

38 Da falt Herrens ild og fortærte brennofferet, veden, steinene og støvet, og slikket opp vannet i grøften.

Then the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

39 Da hele folket så det, falt de på sitt ansikt og sa: Herren, han er Gud! Herren, han er Gud!

And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, Jehovah, he is God; Jehovah, he is God.

40 Elia sa til dem: Grijp Baals profeter, la ingen av dem slippe unna! De grep dem, og Elia førte dem ned til bekken Kishon og drepte dem der.

and Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

41 Så sa Elia til Akab: Gå opp, spis og drikk, for jeg hører lyden av styrtregn.

And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.

42 Akab gikk opp for å spise og drikke, mens Elia gikk opp til toppen av Karmel. Han kastet seg ned på jorden med ansiktet mellom knærne.

So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees.

43 Han sa til sin tjener: Gå opp og se mot sjøen. Han gikk opp og så og sa: Det er ingenting. Elia sa: Gå opp igjen, syv ganger.

And he said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

44 Det skjedde den syvende gangen, at han sa: Se, en liten sky som en manns hånd stiger opp fra havet. Elia sa: Gå opp, si til Akab: Spenn for vognen og dra ned, så regnet ikke stopper deg.

And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a cloud out of the sea, as small as a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Make ready `thy chariot', and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.

45 På den tiden ble himmelen svart med skyer og vind, og det kom et voldsomt regn. Akab red og dro til Jisreel.

And it came to pass in a little while, that the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel:

46 Herren var med Elia. Han bandt opp om seg og løp foran Akab til inngangen til Jisreel.

and the hand of Jehovah was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
