1 Ahab fortalte Jezebel alt det Elia hadde gjort, og hvordan han hadde drept alle profetene med sverdet.

And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

2 Da sendte Jezebel en budbringer til Elia og sa: Måtte gudene gjøre meg det samme og mer til, dersom jeg ikke gjør ditt liv som en av deres innen denne tid i morgen.

Then Jezebel send a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to-morrow about this time.

3 Da han så det, sto han opp og flyktet for livet og kom til Beer-Seba, som tilhører Juda, og der lot han sin tjener bli igjen.

And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.

4 Men han selv gikk en dagsreise ut i ørkenen, og han satte seg under en gyvelbusk og ba om å få dø og sa: Det er nok; ta nå mitt liv, Herre, for jeg er ikke bedre enn mine fedre.

But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper-tree: and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is enough; now, O Jehovah, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

5 Han la seg ned og sovnet under gyvelbusken, men en engel rørte ved ham og sa til ham: Stå opp og spis.

And he lay down and slept under a juniper-tree; and, behold, an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.

6 Da han så opp, så han en kake som var bakt på glør og en karaffel med vann ved hodet sitt. Han spiste og drakk og la seg ned igjen.

And he looked, and, behold, there was at his head a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.

7 Men Herrens engel kom igjen for andre gang, rørte ved ham og sa: Stå opp og spis, for ellers blir veien for lang for deg.

And the angel of Jehovah came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for thee.

8 Han sto opp, spiste og drakk, og styrket av den maten gikk han i førti dager og førti netter til Guds fjell Horeb.

And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

9 Der gikk han inn i en hule og overnattet der. Da kom Herrens ord til ham, og han sa til ham: Hva gjør du her, Elia?

And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of Jehovah came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

10 Han svarte: Jeg har vært meget nidkjær for Herren, hærskarenes Gud, for Israels barn har forlatt din pakt, revet ned dine altere og drept dine profeter med sverdet. Jeg alene er igjen, og de trakter etter mitt liv for å ta det.

And he said, I have been very jealous for Jehovah, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword: and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

11 Da sa han: Gå ut og stå på fjellet for Herrens åsyn. Og se, Herren gikk forbi, og en stor og sterk vind som rev fjell i stykker og knuste klipper for Herren; men Herren var ikke i vinden. Etter vinden kom det et jordskjelv; men Herren var ikke i jordskjelvet.

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before Jehovah. And, behold, Jehovah passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before Jehovah; but Jehovah was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but Jehovah was not in the earthquake:

12 Etter jordskjelvet kom det en ild; men Herren var ikke i ilden. Etter ilden kom det en stille, lav stemme.

and after the earthquake a fire; but Jehovah was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

13 Da Elia hørte det, dekket han ansiktet med kappen og gikk ut og sto ved inngangen til hulen. Og se, en stemme kom til ham og sa: Hva gjør du her, Elia?

And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

14 Han svarte: Jeg har vært meget nidkjær for Herren, hærskarenes Gud, for Israels barn har forlatt din pakt, revet ned dine altere og drept dine profeter med sverdet. Jeg alene er igjen, og de trakter etter mitt liv for å ta det.

And he said, I have been very jealous for Jehovah, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

15 Herren sa til ham: Gå tilbake på din vei til ørkenen ved Damaskus; og når du kommer dit, skal du salve Hazael til konge over Syria.

And Jehovah said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, thou shalt anoint Hazael to be king over Syria;

16 Jehu, sønn av Nimshi, skal du salve til konge over Israel; og Elisha, sønn av Safat fra Abel-Mehola, skal du salve til profet i ditt sted.

and Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.

17 Den som slipper unna Hazaels sverd, skal Jehu drepe, og den som slipper unna Jehus sverd, skal Elisha drepe.

And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay; and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.

18 Men jeg vil etterlate meg sju tusen i Israel, alle de knær som ikke har bøyd seg for Baal, og hver munn som ikke har kysset ham.

Yet will I leave `me' seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

19 Da dro han derfra og fant Elisha, sønn av Safat, som holdt på å pløye med tolv par okser foran seg, og han var med det tolvte. Elia gikk bort til ham og kastet kappen over ham.

So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing, with twelve yoke `of oxen' before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed over unto him, and cast his mantle upon him.

20 Så forlot han oksene, løp etter Elia og sa: La meg få kysse min far og min mor, så vil jeg følge deg. Elia svarte: Gå tilbake igjen, for hva har jeg gjort med deg?

And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again; for what have I done to thee?

21 Så vendte han tilbake fra Elia, tok paret med okser og slaktet dem, kokte kjøttet med redskapene til oksene og ga folket, og de spiste. Deretter reiste han seg og fulgte Elia og tjente ham.

And he returned from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
