1 Ben-Hadad, kongen av Syria, samlet hele sin hær; det var trettito konger med ham, med hester og vogner. Han dro opp og beleiret Samaria, og kjempet mot det.

And Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together; and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and fought against it.

2 Han sendte budbringere til Ahab, kongen av Israel, i byen, og sa til ham: Slik sier Ben-Hadad.

And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel, into the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Ben-hadad,

3 Ditt sølv og ditt gull tilhører meg; dine koner og dine skjønneste barn er også mine.

Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine.

4 Israels konge svarte og sa: Det er som du sier, min herre, konge; jeg er din og alt jeg har.

And the king of Israel answered and said, It is according to thy saying, my lord, O king; I am thine, and all that I have.

5 Budbringerne kom igjen og sa: Slik sier Ben-Hadad: Jeg sendte virkelig bud til deg og sa: Du skal gi meg ditt sølv og ditt gull, dine koner og dine barn.

And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Ben-hadad, saying, I sent indeed unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;

6 Men i morgen ved denne tid vil jeg sende mine tjenere til deg, og de skal gjennomsøke ditt hus og dine tjeneres hus. Alt som er behagelig for dine øyne, skal de ta i sine hender og bære bort.

but I will send my servants unto thee to-morrow about this time, and they shall search thy house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.

7 Da kalte Israels konge sammen alle landets eldste og sa: Se, og legg merke til hvordan denne mannen søker trøbbel, for han har sendt bud etter mine koner, mine barn, mitt sølv og mitt gull, og jeg har ikke nektet ham det.

Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.

8 Alle de eldste og hele folket sa til ham: Lytt ikke til ham, og samtykk ikke.

And all the elders and all the people said unto him, Hearken thou not, neither consent.

9 Så sa han til Ben-Hadads budbringere: Si til min herre kongen: Alt som du først sendte om til din tjener, vil jeg gjøre; men denne tingen kan jeg ikke gjøre. Og budbringerne dro og ga ham beskjed igjen.

Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Ben-hadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do; but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.

10 Ben-Hadad sendte da til ham og sa: Må gudene gjøre så slik mot meg og mer til, hvis støvet fra Samaria vil være nok til å fylle håndfuller for alle folkene som følger meg.

And Ben-hadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.

11 Israels konge svarte og sa: Si til ham: Den som binder på sitt våpenutstyr, skal ikke skryte som den som tar det av.

And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on `his armor' boast himself as he that putteth it off.

12 Da Ben-Hadad hørte denne meldingen, mens han drakk, han og kongene, i teltene, sa han til sine tjenere: Klar til kamp! Og de stilte seg opp mot byen.

And it came to pass, when `Ben-hadad' heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings, in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants, Set `yourselves in array'. And they set `themselves in array' against the city.

13 Se, en profet kom til Ahab, Israels konge, og sa: Så sier Herren: Har du sett all denne store mengden? Se, jeg vil gi den i din hånd i dag, og du skal vite at jeg er Herren.

And, behold, a prophet came near unto Ahab king of Israel, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thy hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am Jehovah.

14 Ahab sa: Hvem skal gjøre det? Og han sa: Så sier Herren: Ved de unge mennene blant fyrstene i provinsene. Da sa han: Hvem skal begynne slaget? Og han svarte: Du.

And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith Jehovah, By the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall begin the battle? And he answered, Thou.

15 Så talte han opp de unge mennene blant fyrstene i provinsene, og de var to hundre og trettito. Etter dem tellet han opp hele folket, alle Israels barn, som var sju tusen.

Then he mustered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty-two: and after them he mustered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.

16 De gikk ut ved middagstid. Men Ben-Hadad drakk seg full i teltene, han og de trettito kongene som hjalp ham.

And they went out at noon. But Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.

17 De unge mennene blant fyrstene i provinsene kom ut først; og Ben-Hadad sendte ut speidere, som sa: Det er menn som kommer ut fra Samaria.

And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out from Samaria.

18 Han sa: Enten de kommer ut for fred, ta dem levende, eller om de kommer ut for krig, ta dem levende.

And he said, Whether they are come out for peace, take them alive, or whether they are come out for war, taken them alive.

19 Så gikk de ut av byen, de unge mennene blant fyrstene i provinsene og hæren som fulgte dem.

So these went out of the city, the young men of the princes of the provinces, and the army which followed them.

20 Og hver mann slo sin motstander; syrerne flyktet, og Israel forfulgte dem. Ben-Hadad, kongen av Syria, slapp unna på en hest med ryttere.

And they slew every one his man; and the Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them: and Ben-hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen.

21 Israels konge gikk ut, slo hester og vogner, og fullførte et stort slag mot syrerne.

And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.

22 Profeten kom til Israels konge og sa til ham: Gå, styrk deg, og tenk nøye over hva du gjør; for ved årets slutt vil kongen av Syria komme opp mot deg igjen.

And the prophet came near to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest; for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.

23 Syrerkongens tjenere sa til ham: Deres Gud er en gud av høydene; derfor var de sterkere enn oss. La oss sloss mot dem på slettene, så vil vi visselig være sterkere enn de.

And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their god is a god of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we: but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.

24 Gjør dette: Ta kongene bort fra deres plasser, og sett hærførere i stedet for dem.

And do this thing: take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their room;

25 Tel en hær lik den du har mistet, hest for hest og vogn for vogn. La oss kjempe mot dem på slettene, og vi vil visstelig være sterkere enn de. Og han lyttet til dem, og gjorde slik.

and number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot; and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did so.

26 Ved årets slutt telte Ben-Hadad syrerne og dro opp til Afek for å kjempe mot Israel.

And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Ben-hadad mustered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.

27 Israels barn ble telt og forsynte seg, og dro mot dem. Israels barn slo leir foran dem som to små flokker av geiter, mens syrerne fylte landet.

And the children of Israel were mustered, and were victualled, and went against them: and the children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.

28 En gudsmann kom nær og talte til Israels konge og sa: Så sier Herren: Fordi syrerne har sagt: Herren er en gud av høydene, men han er ikke en gud av dalene, vil jeg gi hele denne store mengden i din hånd, så dere skal vite at jeg er Herren.

And a man of God came near and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, Because the Syrians have said, Jehovah is a god of the hills, but he is not a god of the valleys; therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thy hand, and ye shall know that I am Jehovah.

29 De leiret seg mot hverandre i syv dager. På den syvende dagen begynte slaget, og Israels barn slo et hundre tusen fotfolk av syrerne på én dag.

And they encamped one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians a hundred thousand footmen in one day.

30 De som var igjen, flyktet til Afek, opp i byen, og veggen falt og drepte tjuesyv tusen av de gjenværende mennene. Ben-Hadad flyktet inn i byen, inn i et indre kammer.

But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and the wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand men that were left. And Ben-hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.

31 Hans tjenere sa til ham: Se, vi har hørt at Israels konger er barmhjertige konger. La oss ta sekkeleret om våre hofter og tau om våre hoder, og gå ut til Israels konge. Kanskje vil han spare ditt liv.

And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, we pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life.

32 Så iførte de seg sekkeleret om hofter og tau om hodene, kom til Israels konge og sa: Din tjener Ben-Hadad sier: Jeg ber deg, la meg leve. Og han sa: Er han ennå i live? Han er min bror.

So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and `put' ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.

33 Mennene tok dette som et godt tegn og skyndte seg å gripe ordene fra hans munn. De sa: Din bror Ben-Hadad. Da sa han: Gå og hent ham. Så kom Ben-Hadad ut til ham, og han lot ham stige opp i vognen.

Now the men observed diligently, and hasted to catch whether it were his mind; and they said, Thy brother Ben-hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben-hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.

34 Ben-Hadad sa til ham: Byene som min far tok fra din far, vil jeg gi tilbake, og du skal gjøre gater for deg i Damaskus, slik min far gjorde i Samaria. Ahab sa: Jeg vil la deg gå med denne avtalen. Så inngikk han en avtale med ham og lot ham gå.

And `Ben-hadad' said unto him, The cities which my father took from thy father I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. And I, `said Ahab', will let thee go with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and let him go.

35 En av profetsønnene sa til sin medkommandant ved Herrens ord: Slå meg, jeg ber deg. Mannen nektet å slå ham.

And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his fellow by the word of Jehovah, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.

36 Da sa han til ham: Fordi du ikke har adlydt Herrens stemme, vil se, en løve drepe deg så snart du går bort fra meg. Da han dro fra ham, fant en løve ham og drepte ham.

Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of Jehovah, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.

37 Han fant en annen mann og sa: Slå meg, jeg ber deg. Mannen slo ham og såret ham.

Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, smiting and wounding him.

38 Så dro profeten avsted, ventende på kongen ved veien, og forkledde seg med et bind for øynene.

So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with his headband over his eyes.

39 Da kongen kom forbi, ropte han til kongen og sa: Din tjener gikk midt inn i slaget, da brakte en mann en mann til meg og sa: Hold denne mannen; hvis han mangler, skal ditt liv være for hans liv, eller du skal betale en talent sølv.

And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king; and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.

40 Mens din tjener var opptatt her og der, var han borte. Israels konge sa til ham: Så skal din dom være; du har selv bestemt det.

And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.

41 Han skyndte seg å fjerne bindet fra øynene; og Israels konge kjente ham igjen som en av profetene.

And he hasted, and took the headband away from his eyes; and the king of israel discerned him that he was of the prophets.

42 Han sa til ham: Så sier Herren: Fordi du har latt mannen gå, han som jeg har viet til utslettelse, vil ditt liv gå for hans liv, og ditt folk for hans folk.

And he said unto him, Thus saith Jehovah, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.

43 Israels konge dro hjem, tungsinnet og misfornøyd, og kom til Samaria.

And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.
