Da året var gått, på tiden når konger drar ut i krig, sendte David Joab og sine tjenere med ham, og hele Israel. De ødela ammonittene og beleiret Rabba. Men David ble værende i Jerusalem.

And it came to pass, at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out `to battle', that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem.

Det skjedde en kveld at David sto opp fra sengen og gikk omkring på taket av kongens hus. Fra taket så han en kvinne som badet, og kvinnen var meget vakker.

And it came to pass at eventide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

David sendte bud og spurte om kvinnen. En sa: Er ikke dette Batseba, datteren til Eliam, kona til Uria, hetitten?

And David send and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?

David sendte budbringerne sine, og hun kom til ham, og han lå med henne (for hun hadde renset seg fra sin urenhet). Så vendte hun tilbake til huset sitt.

And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her (for she was purified from her uncleanness); and she returned unto her house.

Kvinnen ble gravid og sendte bud til David og sa: Jeg er med barn.

And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

David sendte beskjed til Joab: Send meg Uria, hetitten. Og Joab sendte Uria til David.

And David sent to Joab, `saying', Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.

Da Uria kom til ham, spurte David ham hvordan Joab hadde det, hvordan folket hadde det, og hvordan krigen gikk.

And when Uriah was come unto him, David asked of him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.

David sa til Uria: Gå hjem og vask føttene dine. Uria forlot kongens hus, og det ble sendt en gave fra kongen etter ham.

And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess `of food' from the king.

Men Uria sov ved inngangen til kongens hus sammen med alle sin herres tjenere og gikk ikke hjem.

But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.

Da de fortalte David at Uria ikke hadde gått hjem, sa David til Uria: Har du ikke kommet fra en reise? Hvorfor gikk du ikke hjem?

And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Art thou not come from a journey? wherefore didst thou not go down unto thy house?

Uria svarte David: Arken, Israel og Juda bor i telt; min herre Joab og min herres tjenere ligger i leiren på marken. Skulle da jeg gå hjem for å spise, drikke og ligge med min kone? Så sant du lever, og så sant din sjel lever, jeg vil ikke gjøre det.

And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in booths; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.

David sa til Uria: Bli her i dag også, så vil jeg la deg dra i morgen. Så ble Uria i Jerusalem den dagen og den neste.

And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to-day also, and to-morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.

David kalte ham til seg, og han spiste og drakk hos ham, og David gjorde ham full. Om kvelden gikk han ut for å legge seg blant sin herres tjenere, men han gikk ikke hjem.

And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.

Om morgenen skrev David et brev til Joab og sendte det med Uria.

And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

I brevet skrev han: Sett Uria i fronten der striden er hardest, og trekk dere så tilbake fra ham, slik at han blir slått og dør.

And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.

Da Joab holdt vakt ved byen, satte han Uria på det stedet han visste de tapreste mennene var.

And it came to pass, when Joab kept watch upon the city, that he assigned Uriah unto the place where he knew that valiant men were.

Byens menn gikk ut og kjempet mot Joab, og noen av Davids tjenere falt, også Uria, hetitten, døde.

And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people, even of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

Da sendte Joab bud og fortalte David alt om krigen.

Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;

Han ga budbringeren beskjed om å si til David alt om krigen,

and he charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling all the things concerning the war unto the king,

og hvis kongen blir sint og spør: Hvorfor gikk dere så nær byen og kjempet? Visste dere ikke at de ville skyte fra muren?

it shall be that, if the king's wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore went ye so nigh unto the city to fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?

Hvem som drepte Abimelek, Jerubbeshets sønn? Var det ikke en kvinne som kastet en kvernstein på ham fra muren, så han døde i Tebes? Hvorfor gikk dere så nær muren? Da skal du si: Din tjener Uria, hetitten, er også død.

who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast an upper millstone upon him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? why went ye so nigh the wall? then shalt thou say, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

Budbringeren dro og kom til David og fortalte alt Joab hadde sagt han skulle si.

So the messenger went, and came and showed David all that Joab had sent him for.

Budbringeren sa til David: Mennene var sterkere enn oss, de kom ut mot oss på marken, men vi slo dem tilbake helt til byens port.

And the messenger said unto David, The men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entrance of the gate.

Skyterne skjøt fra muren på dine tjenere, og noen av kongens tjenere er døde; din tjener Uria, hetitten, er også død.

And the shooters shot at thy servants from off the wall; and some of the king's servants are dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

David sa til budbringeren: Slik skal du si til Joab: La ikke dette bekymre deg, for sverdet fortærer den ene som den andre. Legg mer kraft i kampene mot byen og ødelegg den. Oppmuntre ham.

Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another; make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.

Da Uria, hennes mann, var død, sørget Uria's kone over mannen sin.

And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband.

Da sørgetiden var over, sendte David bud etter henne og tok henne hjem til seg. Hun ble hans kone og fødte ham en sønn. Men det David hadde gjort, mishaget Herren.

And when the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased Jehovah.
