Jakob løftet blikket, og så, Esau kom mot ham med fire hundre menn. Han delte barna mellom Lea, Rakel og de to tjenestepikene.

And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau was coming, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.

Han satte tjenestepikene med barna fremst, Lea og barna etter, og bakerst Rakel og Josef.

And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.

Han gikk selv foran dem og bøyde seg mot jorden sju ganger, til han kom nær sin bror.

And he himself passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

Esau løp mot ham, omfavnet ham, falt om hans hals, kysset ham, og de gråt.

And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.

Da Esau løftet blikket og så kvinnene og barna, spurte han, Hvem er disse med deg? Jakob svarte, Barna som Gud har gitt din tjener i nåde.

And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are these with thee? And he said, The children whom God hath graciously given thy servant.

Tjenestepikene nærmet seg med sine barn og bøyde seg.

Then the handmaids came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.

Lea og hennes barn gikk også frem og bøyde seg, deretter Josef og Rakel, og de bøyde seg.

And Leah also and her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.

Esau spurte, Hva betyr hele denne flokken som jeg møtte? Jakob svarte, For å finne velvilje i din øyne, min herre.

And he said, What meanest thou by all this company which I met? And he said, To find favor in the sight of my lord.

Esau sa, Jeg har nok, min bror; behold det du har.

And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; let that which thou hast be thine.

Men Jakob svarte, Nei, jeg ber deg, hvis jeg har funnet nåde i dine øyne, ta imot min gave fra min hånd; for jeg har sett ditt ansikt som om jeg så Guds eget ansikt, og du har vært vennlig mot meg.

And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found favor in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand; forasmuch as I have seen thy face, as one seeth the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.

Jeg ber deg, ta imot min gave, som er brakt til deg; for Gud har vært nådig mot meg, og jeg har alt jeg trenger. Han insisterte, og Esau tok imot gaven.

Take, I pray thee, my gift that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.

Esau sa, La oss dra videre sammen, så skal jeg lede veien for deg.

And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.

Men Jakob sa til ham, Min herre vet at barna er svake, og jeg har omsorg for buskapen og dyrene som har unger. Hvis de drives hardt en dag, vil hele flokken dø.

And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and that the flocks and herds with me have their young: and if they overdrive them one day, all the flocks will die.

La min herre derfor dra foran sin tjener, så vil jeg lede flokken langsomt, etter farten til buskapen og barna, til jeg når min herre i Seir.

Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on gently, according to the pace of the cattle that are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.

Esau sa, La meg da etterlate noen av mine folk hos deg. Jakob svarte, Hvorfor skulle det være nødvendig? La meg finne nåde i din øyne, min herre.

And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me. And he said, What needeth it? let me find favor in the sight of my lord.

Samme dag vendte Esau tilbake til Seir.

So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.

Jakob dro videre til Sukkot, bygde seg et hus og lagde boder til buskapen. Derfor kalles stedet Sukkot.

And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him a house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.

Jakob kom i fred til byen Sikem, i Kanaan, fra Paddan-aram, og slo opp leir før byen.

And Jacob came in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan-aram; and encamped before the city.

Han kjøpte jordstykket hvor han satte opp sitt telt, av Hamors barn, Sikems far, for hundre penge.

And he bought the parcel of ground, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for a hundred pieces of money.

Der reiste han et alter og kalte det El-Elohe-Israel.

And he erected there an altar, and called it El-elohe-israel.
