Da svarte Elifas fra Teman og sa,

Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

Kan et menneske være til nytte for Gud? Sannelig, den vise er til nytte for seg selv.

Can a man be profitable unto God? Surely he that is wise is profitable unto himself.

Er det en glede for Den Allmektige at du er rettferdig? Eller er det en gevinst for ham at du gjør dine veier fullkomne?

Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? Or is it gain `to him', that thou makest thy ways perfect?

Er det på grunn av din frykt for ham at han refser deg, eller at han fører sak mot deg?

Is it for thy fear `of him' that he reproveth thee, That he entereth with thee into judgment?

Er ikke din ondskap stor? Og det er ingen ende på dine synder.

Is not thy wickedness great? Neither is there any end to thine iniquities.

For du har tatt pant av din bror uten grunn, og ribbet de nakne for deres klær.

For thou hast taken pledges of thy brother for nought, And stripped the naked of their clothing.

Du har ikke gitt vann til de tørste, og du har holdt tilbake brød fra de sultne.

Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, And thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

Men den mektige mannen hadde jorden, og den ærefulle mannen bodde i den.

But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; And the honorable man, he dwelt in it.

Du har sendt enker bort med tomme hender, og den farløses armer er blitt knust.

Thou hast sent widows away empty, And the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

Derfor er snarer rundt deg, og plutselig frykt forferder deg,

Therefore snares are round about thee, And sudden fear troubleth thee,

eller mørke, slik at du ikke kan se, og overstrømmende vann dekker deg.

Or darkness, so that thou canst not see, And abundance of waters cover thee.

Er ikke Gud i himmelens høyde? Og se på stjernenes høyde, hvor høye de er!

Is not God in the height of heaven? And behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

Og du sier: Hva vet Gud? Kan han dømme gjennom det tette mørket?

And thou sayest, What doth God know? Can he judge through the thick darkness?

Tykk sky er et dekke for ham, så han ser ikke; og han vandrer på himmelhvelvingen.

Thick clouds are a covering to him, so that he seeth not; And he walketh on the vault of heaven.

Vil du holde fast ved den gamle veien som de onde gikk?

Wilt thou keep the old way Which wicked men have trodden?

De ble revet bort før sin tid, og deres grunnvoll ble skyllet bort som en elv,

Who were snatched away before their time, Whose foundation was poured out as a stream,

som sa til Gud: Gå bort fra oss; og: Hva kan Den Allmektige gjøre for oss?

Who said unto God, Depart from us; And, What can the Almighty do for us?

Likevel fylte han deres hus med gode ting. Men de ondes råd er langt borte fra meg.

Yet he filled their houses with good things: But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

De rettferdige ser det og gleder seg, og de uskyldige ler dem til skamme,

The righteous see it, and are glad; And the innocent laugh them to scorn,

som sier: Sannelig, de som reiste seg mot oss, er utryddet, og resten av dem har ilden fortært.

`Saying', Surely they that did rise up against us are cut off, And the remnant of them the fire hath consumed.

Bli nå kjent med ham og vær i fred, og godt vil komme til deg.

Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: Thereby good shall come unto thee.

Ta loven fra hans munn, jeg ber deg, og legg hans ord i ditt hjerte.

Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, And lay up his words in thy heart.

Hvis du vender tilbake til Den Allmektige, skal du bli bygd opp. Hvis du fjerner urettferdighet langt fra dine telt,

If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, If thou put away unrighteousness far from thy tents.

og legger din rikdom i støvet, og gullet fra Ofir blant bekkens steiner,

And lay thou `thy' treasure in the dust, And `the gold of' Ophir among the stones of the brooks;

da vil Den Allmektige være din skatt og ditt dyrebare sølv.

And the Almighty will be thy treasure, And precious silver unto thee.

For da skal du fryde deg i Den Allmektige og løfte ditt ansikt til Gud.

For then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty, And shalt lift up thy face unto God.

Du skal be til ham, og han vil høre deg, og du skal oppfylle dine løfter.

Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee; And thou shalt pay thy vows.

Du skal også befale noe, og det skal bli opprettet for deg, og lys skal skinne på dine veier.

Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; And light shall shine upon thy ways.

Når de kaster deg ned, skal du si: Det er en opphøyelse, og han vil redde den ydmyke.

When they cast `thee' down, thou shalt say, `There is' lifting up; And the humble person he will save.

Han vil til og med utfri den som ikke er uskyldig; ja, han skal bli frelst ved dine rene hender.

He will deliver `even' him that is not innocent: Yea, he shall be delivered through the cleanness of thy hands.
