Verse 1
Do you know the time when the mountain goats give birth? Can you observe the labor of the deer?
Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve?
Verse 2
Can you count the months they fulfill, or do you know the time when they give birth?
Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?
Verse 3
They crouch down, give birth to their young, and deliver their offspring.
They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.
Verse 4
Their young grow strong, thrive in the open field, and leave, never returning to them.
Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto them.
Verse 5
Who set the wild donkey free? Who released the bonds of the onager?
Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass?
Verse 6
I made the wilderness its home and the barren land its dwelling place.
Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.
Verse 7
It laughs at the commotion of the city; it does not hear the shouts of the driver.
He scorneth the multitude of the city, neither regardeth he the crying of the driver.
Verse 8
It searches the mountains for its grazing, pursuing every green thing.
The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.
Verse 9
Will the wild ox consent to serve you? Will it spend the night at your manger?
Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?
Verse 10
Can you bind the wild ox in a furrow with a rope? Can it harrow the valleys behind you?
Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?
Verse 11
Will you trust it because its strength is great and leave your labor to it?
Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him?
Verse 12
Can you rely on it to bring back your grain and gather it to your threshing floor?
Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?
Verse 13
The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully, but are they the pinions and plumage of a stork?
Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich?
Verse 14
She leaves her eggs on the ground and lets them warm in the dust.
Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust,
Verse 15
She forgets that a foot may crush them or a wild animal may trample them.
And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.
Verse 16
She treats her young harshly, as if they were not hers; her labor is in vain because she has no fear.
She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear;
Verse 17
For God has deprived her of wisdom and has not given her understanding.
Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding.
Verse 18
When she rises on high, she mocks the horse and its rider.
What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.
Verse 19
Do you give strength to the horse or clothe its neck with a flowing mane?
Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder?
Verse 20
Do you make it leap like a locust, its majestic snorting filling the air with terror?
Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible.
Verse 21
It paws eagerly in the valley, rejoices in its strength, and charges into the battle.
He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men.
Verse 22
It laughs at fear, unshaken and undeterred by the sword.
He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword.
Verse 23
The quiver rattles against it, along with the flashing spear and javelin.
The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield.
Verse 24
With fierce excitement and rage, it devours the ground, unable to stand still when it hears the trumpet sound.
He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet.
Verse 25
At the sound of the trumpet, it says, 'Aha!' It scents the battle from afar, the thunder of commanders and the war cries.
He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.
Verse 26
Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom and spread its wings toward the south?
Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?
Verse 27
Does the eagle soar at your command and build its nest on high?
Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high?
Verse 28
It dwells and lodges on the rocky crag, on the sharp point of the cliff and its stronghold.
She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place.
Verse 29
From there it searches for food; its eyes see it from afar.
From thence she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.
Verse 30
Its young ones drink blood, and where the slain are, there it is.
Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.
