Festus kom til provinsen og dro etter tre dager opp til Jerusalem fra Cæsarea.

Festus therefore, having come into the province, after three days went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea.

Da fortalte overpresten og de ledende menn blant jødene ham om Paulus, og de tryglet ham.

Then the high priest and the principal men of the Jews informed him against Paul, and they begged him,

De ba om en tjeneste mot Paulus, at han skulle kalle ham til Jerusalem, mens de planla å drepe ham på veien.

asking a favor against him, that he would summon him to Jerusalem; plotting to kill him on the way.

Men Festus svarte at Paulus skulle holdes i forvaring i Cæsarea, og at han selv snart skulle dra tilbake dit.

However Festus answered that Paul should be kept in custody at Caesarea, and that he himself was about to depart shortly.

"La derfor de som er mektige blant dere dra ned med meg, og hvis det er noe galt ved mannen, la dem anklage ham."

"Let them therefore," said he, "that are in power among you go down with me, and if there is anything wrong in the man, let them accuse him."

Da han hadde vært blant dem i mer enn ti dager, dro han ned til Cæsarea. Dagen etter satte han seg på dommersetet og befalte at Paulus skulle bli fremført.

When he had stayed among them more than ten days, he went down to Caesarea, and on the next day he sat on the judgment seat, and commanded Paul to be brought.

Da han kom, stod jødene som hadde kommet fra Jerusalem rundt ham og fremførte mange alvorlige anklager mot ham, som de ikke kunne bevise.

When he had come, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing against him many and grievous charges which they could not prove,

Mens Paulus forsvarte seg, sa han: "Verken mot jødenes lov, tempelet eller mot keiseren har jeg syndet i det hele tatt."

while he said in his defense, "Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar, have I sinned at all."

Men Festus, som ønsket å vinne jødenes gunst, svarte Paulus og sa: "Er du villig til å dra opp til Jerusalem og bli dømt der av meg i disse sakene?"

But Festus, desiring to gain favor with the Jews, answered Paul and said, "Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem, and be judged by me there concerning these things?"

Men Paulus sa: "Jeg står foran keiserens dommersete, hvor jeg bør bli dømt. Jeg har ikke gjort noe galt mot jødene, som du også vet svært godt.

But Paul said, "I am standing before Caesar's judgment seat, where I ought to be tried. I have done no wrong to the Jews, as you also know very well.

For hvis jeg har gjort noe galt og har gjort meg fortjent til døden, nekter jeg ikke å dø; men hvis ingenting av det de anklager meg for er sant, kan ingen overgi meg til dem. Jeg appellerer til keiseren!"

For if I have done wrong, and have committed anything worthy of death, I don't refuse to die; but if none of those things is true that they accuse me of, no one can give me up to them. I appeal to Caesar!"

Da Festus hadde rådført seg med rådet, svarte han: "Du har appellerte til keiseren. Til keiseren skal du dra."

Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, "You have appealed to Caesar. To Caesar you shall go."

Noen dager senere kom kong Agrippa og Bernike til Cæsarea og hilste på Festus.

Now when some days had passed, Agrippa the King and Bernice arrived at Caesarea, and greeted Festus.

Mens de oppholdt seg der i flere dager, la Festus fram Paulus’ sak for kongen, og sa: "Det er en mann som er blitt etterlatt som fange av Felix;

As he stayed there many days, Festus laid Paul's case before the king, saying, "There is a certain man left a prisoner by Felix;

about whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, asking for a sentence against him.

Til dem svarte jeg at det ikke er romernes skikk å gi noen mann over til undergang før den anklagede har møtt anklagerne ansikt til ansikt og har fått mulighet til å forsvare seg mot det han anklages for.

To whom I answered that it is not the custom of the Romans to give up any man to destruction, before the accused has met the accusers face to face, and has had opportunity to make his defense concerning the matter laid against him.

Da de var samlet her, nølte jeg ikke, men dagen etter satte jeg meg på dommersetet og befalte at mannen skulle bringes fram.

When therefore they had come together here, I didn't delay, but on the next day sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought.

Da anklagerne reiste seg, brakte de ingen anklager av den typen som jeg hadde forventet;

Concerning whom, when the accusers stood up, they brought no charge of such things as I supposed;

men de hadde visse spørsmål mot ham om deres egen religion og om en viss Jesus, som var død, men som Paulus hevdet var i live.

but had certain questions against him about their own religion, and about one Jesus, who was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.

Being perplexed how to inquire concerning these things, I asked whether he was willing to go to Jerusalem and there be judged concerning these matters.

But when Paul had appealed to be kept for the decision of the emperor, I commanded him to be kept until I could send him to Caesar."

Agrippa sa til Festus: "Jeg vil også gjerne høre denne mannen selv." "I morgen," sa han, "skal du få høre ham."

Agrippa said to Festus, "I also would like to hear the man myself." "Tomorrow," he said, "you shall hear him."

Så neste dag, da Agrippa og Bernike hadde kommet med stor prakt, gikk de inn i høringshallen med kommandantene og byens ledende menn, og ved Festus’ befaling ble Paulus ført inn.

So on the next day, when Agrippa and Bernice had come with great pomp, and they had entered into the place of hearing with the commanding officers and principal men of the city, at the command of Festus, Paul was brought in.

Festus sa: "Kong Agrippa, og alle som er til stede hos oss, ser dere denne mannen, om hvem all mengden av jødene har bedt meg, både i Jerusalem og her, med rop om at han ikke burde leve lenger.

Festus said, "King Agrippa, and all men who are here present with us, you see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews petitioned me, both at Jerusalem and here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.

Men når jeg fant at han ikke hadde gjort noe som fortjener dødsstraff, og siden han selv har appellerte til keiseren, bestemte jeg meg for å sende ham.

But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and as he himself appealed to the emperor I determined to send him.

Om ham har jeg ingenting bestemt å skrive til min herre. Derfor har jeg ført ham fram for dere, og spesielt for deg, kong Agrippa, for at jeg etter undersøkelse kan ha noe å skrive.

Of whom I have no certain thing to write to my lord. Therefore I have brought him forth before you, and especially before you, King Agrippa, that, after examination, I may have something to write.

For det virker urimelig for meg å sende en fange uten også å spesifisere anklagene mot ham."

For it seems to me unreasonable, in sending a prisoner, not to also specify the charges against him."
