1 Agrippa sa til Paulus, "Du kan tale for deg selv." Da rakte Paulus ut hånden og begynte sin forsvarstale.

Agrippa said to Paul, "You may speak for yourself." Then Paul stretched out his hand, and made his defense.

2 "Jeg anser meg selv heldig, kong Agrippa, at jeg i dag kan forsvare meg for deg om alle de anklager som jødene har reist mot meg,

"I think myself happy, King Agrippa, that I am to make my defense before you this day concerning all the things that I am accused by the Jews,

3 særlig fordi du er ekspert på alle skikkene og spørsmålene blant jødene. Derfor ber jeg deg innstendig om å høre meg med tålmodighet.

especially because you are expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews. Therefore I beg you to hear me patiently.

4 Alle jødene kjenner min livsførsel fra ungdommen av, den begynte blant mitt eget folk og i Jerusalem.

"Indeed, all the Jews know my way of life from my youth up, which was from the beginning among my own nation and at Jerusalem;

5 De har kjent meg fra begynnelsen, om de bare vil vitne, at jeg levde som fariseer etter den strengeste retningen innen vår religion.

having known me from the first, if they are willing to testify, that after the strictest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

6 Nå står jeg her for å bli dømt for håpet om det løftet Gud ga våre fedre,

Now I stand here to be judged for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers,

7 som våre tolv stammer, ivrig tjener dag og natt, håper å oppnå. For dette håpet, kong Agrippa, er jeg anklaget av jødene!

which our twelve tribes, earnestly serving night and day, hope to attain. Concerning this hope I am accused by the Jews, King Agrippa!

8 Hvorfor regnes det som utrolig blant dere, at Gud reiser opp de døde?

Why is it judged incredible with you, if God does raise the dead?

9 Jeg trodde selv en gang at jeg burde gjøre mye for å motarbeide navnet Jesus fra Nasaret.

"I myself most assuredly thought that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

10 Dette gjorde jeg også i Jerusalem. Jeg fengslet mange av de hellige med fullmakt fra øversteprestene, og når de ble dømt til døden ga jeg min stemme mot dem.

This I also did in Jerusalem. I both shut up many of the saints in prisons, having received authority from the chief priests, and when they were put to death I gave my vote against them.

11 Jeg straffet dem ofte i alle synagogene og forsøkte å få dem til å spotte. I voldsomt raseri forfulgte jeg dem helt til fremmede byer.

Punishing them often in all the synagogues, I tried to make them blaspheme. Being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities.

12 Da jeg reiste til Damaskus med fullmakt og oppdrag fra øversteprestene,

"Whereupon as I traveled to Damascus with the authority and commission from the chief priests,

13 så jeg, ved middagstid, konge, på veien et lys fra himmelen, sterkere enn solen, som skinte omkring meg og de som reiste med meg.

at noon, O King, I saw on the way a light from the sky, brighter than the sun, shining around me and those who traveled with me.

14 Da vi alle falt til jorden, hørte jeg en stemme som talte til meg på hebraisk: 'Saul, Saul, hvorfor forfølger du meg? Det er hardt for deg å slå mot brodden.'

When we had all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.'

15 Jeg spurte: 'Hvem er du, Herre?' Han svarte: 'Jeg er Jesus, som du forfølger.

"I said, 'Who are you, Lord?' "He said, 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.

16 Men stå opp, og reis deg, for jeg har vist meg for deg for å gjøre deg til tjener og vitne, både om det du har sett, og om det jeg vil åpenbare for deg;

But arise, and stand on your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose: to appoint you a servant and a witness both of the things which you have seen, and of the things which I will reveal to you;

17 jeg skal redde deg fra ditt eget folk og fra hedningene, til hvem jeg sender deg,

delivering you from the people, and from the Gentiles, to whom I send you,

18 for å åpne deres øyne, så de vender seg fra mørket til lyset, og fra Satans makt til Gud, så de kan få syndsforlatelse og en plass blant dem som er helliget ved troen på meg.'

to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive remission of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'

19 Derfor, kong Agrippa, var jeg ikke ulydig mot den himmelske syn.

"Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision,

20 Men jeg forkynte først for dem i Damaskus, i Jerusalem, i hele Judea, og for hedningene, at de skulle omvende seg og vende seg til Gud, og gjøre gjerninger som beviser omvendelsen.

but declared first to them of Damascus, at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.

21 Det var på grunn av dette at jødene grep meg i tempelet og prøvde å drepe meg.

For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple, and tried to kill me.

22 Men ved Guds hjelp står jeg til denne dag og vitner både for små og store, uten å si noe annet enn det profetene og Moses sa skulle skje,

Having therefore obtained the help that is from God, I stand to this day testifying both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses said would happen,

23 hvordan Kristus skulle lide, og hvordan han ved oppstandelsen fra de døde skulle være den første som skulle forkynne lys både for folket og for hedningene."

how the Christ must suffer, and how, by the resurrection of the dead, he would be first to proclaim light both to these people and to the Gentiles."

24 Mens han forsvarte seg slik, sa Festus med høy røst: "Paulus, du er gal! Den store lærdommen driver deg til vanvidd!"

As he thus made his defense, Festus said with a loud voice, "Paul, you are crazy! Your great learning is driving you insane!"

25 Men han svarte: "Jeg er ikke gal, høyt ærede Festus, men taler sanne og fornuftige ord.

But he said, "I am not crazy, most excellent Festus, but boldly declare words of truth and reasonableness.

26 For kongen kjenner til disse sakene, og jeg taler åpent til ham. Jeg er overbevist om at ingen av disse ting er skjult for ham, for dette har ikke skjedd i en bortgjemt krok.

For the king knows of these things, to whom also I speak freely. For I am persuaded that none of these things is hidden from him, for this has not been done in a corner.

27 Kong Agrippa, tror du på profetene? Jeg vet at du tror."

King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe."

28 Agrippa sa til Paulus: "Med litt mer overtalelse, forsøker du å gjøre meg til en kristen?"

Agrippa said to Paul, "With a little persuasion are you trying to make me a Christian?"

29 Paulus svarte: "Jeg ber til Gud, at enten med litt eller mye, ikke bare du, men også alle som hører meg i dag, må bli som jeg er, bortsett fra disse lenkene."

Paul said, "I pray to God, that whether with little or with much, not only you, but also all that hear me this day, might become such as I am, except for these bonds."

30 Kongen reiste seg med guvernøren, Bernice, og de som satt sammen med dem.

The king rose up with the governor, and Bernice, and those who sat with them.

31 Da de hadde trukket seg tilbake, snakket de med hverandre og sa: "Denne mannen gjør ingenting som fortjener døden eller lenker."

When they had withdrawn, they spoke one to another, saying, "This man does nothing worthy of death or of bonds."

32 Agrippa sa til Festus: "Denne mannen kunne vært satt fri om han ikke hadde anket til Cæsar."

Agrippa said to Festus, "This man might have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar."
