When it was determined that we should sail for Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners to a centurion named Julius, of the Augustan band.

2 Vi gikk om bord på et skip fra Adramyttium, som skulle seile til steder langs kysten av Asia, og satte til sjøs; Aristarkus, en makedoner fra Tessalonika, var sammen med oss.

Embarking in a ship of Adramyttium, which was about to sail to places on the coast of Asia, we put to sea; Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.

3 Dagen etter nådde vi Sidon. Julius behandlet Paulus vennlig og ga ham tillatelse til å besøke vennene sine og hente seg inn.

The next day, we touched at Sidon. Julius treated Paul kindly, and gave him permission to go to his friends and refresh himself.

4 Da vi seilte derfra, holdt vi oss under Kypros' kystbeskyttelse, fordi vinden var ugunstig.

Putting to sea from there, we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

5 Etter å ha krysset havet utenfor Kilikia og Pamfylia, kom vi til Myra i Lycia.

When we had sailed across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.

6 Der fant centurionen et skip fra Alexandria som var på vei til Italia, og han satte oss om bord.

There the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy, and he put us on board.

7 Vi seilte sakte mange dager, og med vanskelighet kom vi forbi Knidos; vinden tillot oss ikke å fortsette, så vi seilte syd for Kreta, mot Salmone.

When we had sailed slowly many days, and had come with difficulty opposite Cnidus, the wind not allowing us further, we sailed under the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone.

8 Med vanskeligheter seilte vi langs kysten og kom til et sted som heter Gode Havner, nær byen Laséa.

With difficulty sailing along it we came to a certain place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea.

9 Da mye tid hadde gått og reisen nå var farlig, fordi fasten allerede var over, advarte Paulus dem,

When much time had passed and the voyage was now dangerous, because the Fast had now already gone by, Paul admonished them,

10 og sa: "Menn, jeg ser at denne reisen vil føre til skade og stort tap, ikke bare av last og skipet, men også av våre liv."

and said to them, "Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives."

11 Men centurionen stolte mer på kapteinen og skipsrederen enn på det Paulus sa.

But the centurion gave more heed to the master and to the owner of the ship than to those things which were spoken by Paul.

12 Ettersom havnen ikke var egnet til å overvintre, rådet de fleste til å seile derfra, i håp om å nå Føniks og overvintre der, en havn på Kreta som vender mot nordøst og sørøst.

Because the haven was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised going to sea from there, if by any means they could reach Phoenix, and winter there, which is a port of Crete, looking northeast and southeast.

13 Da den sørlige vinden blåste svakt, trodde de at de hadde oppnådd sitt mål, og de heiste anker og seilte langs Kreta, nær kysten.

When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close to shore.

14 Men ikke lenge etter slo en heftig vind ned fra landet, kalt Nordøststorm.

But before long, a tempestuous wind beat down from shore, which is called Euroclydon.{Or, "a northeaster."}

15 Skipet ble grepet, og da vi ikke kunne motstå vinden, måtte vi la det drive.

When the ship was caught, and couldn't face the wind, we gave way to it, and were driven along.

16 Mens vi drev i ly av en liten øy kalt Kauda, klarte vi med vanskelighet å sikre livbåten.

Running under the lee of a small island called Clauda, we were able, with difficulty, to secure the boat.

17 Da de hadde løftet den opp, brukte de kabler for å styrke skipet. Redde for å drive på Syrte-sandene, senket de lyskasteren og lot seg drive med.

After they had hoisted it up, they used cables to help reinforce the ship. Fearing that they would run aground on the Syrtis sand bars, they lowered the sea anchor, and so were driven along.

18 Som vi slet hardt med stormen, begynte de neste dag å kaste ting over bord.

As we labored exceedingly with the storm, the next day they began to throw things overboard.

19 På tredje dagen kastet de skipsredningen over bord med egne hender.

On the third day, they threw out the ship's tackle with their own hands.

20 Da hverken sol eller stjerner lyste på oss i mange dager, og stormen presset hardt på oss, mistet vi alt håp om å bli reddet.

When neither sun nor stars shone on us for many days, and no small tempest pressed on us, all hope that we would be saved was now taken away.

21 Da de hadde vært lenge uten mat, sto Paulus fram blant dem og sa: "Menn, dere burde ha lyttet til meg og ikke seilt fra Kreta og slik sluppet denne skaden og dette tapet.

When they had been long without food, Paul stood up in the middle of them, and said, "Sirs, you should have listened to me, and not have set sail from Crete, and have gotten this injury and loss.

22 Nå oppfordrer jeg dere til å være ved godt mot, for ingen av dere vil miste livet, bare skipet vil gå tapt.

Now I exhort you to cheer up, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.

23 For i natt sto en engel fra den Gud jeg tilhører og tjener ved min side,

For there stood by me this night an angel, belonging to the God whose I am and whom I serve,

24 og sa: 'Frykt ikke, Paulus. Du skal stå for keiseren. Og se, Gud har gitt deg alle som seiler med deg.'

saying, 'Don't be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar. Behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.'

25 Så vær ved godt mot, menn! For jeg tror Gud at det vil bli slik som det er sagt meg.

Therefore, sirs, cheer up! For I believe God, that it will be just as it has been spoken to me.

26 Men vi må strande på en øy."

But we must run aground on a certain island."

27 Da fjortende natt kom, mens vi ble drevet fram og tilbake i Adriaterhavet, mistenkte sjømennene ved midnatt at de nærmet seg land.

But when the fourteenth night had come, as we were driven back and forth in the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors surmised that they were drawing near to some land.

28 De tok dybdemålinger og fant tjue favner dypt. Etter en stund tok de målinger igjen og fant femten favner.

They took soundings, and found twenty fathoms.{20 fathoms = 120 feet = 36.6 meters} After a little while, they took soundings again, and found fifteen fathoms.{15 fathoms = 90 feet = 27.4 meters}.

29 I frykt for å grunnstøte på klipper, kastet de fire ankere fra hekk og bad om daggry.

Fearing that we would run aground on rocky ground, they let go four anchors from the stern, and wished for daylight.

30 Da sjømennene forsøkte å flykte fra skipet og lot livbåten gå på havet under påskudd av å legge ut ankere fra baugen,

As the sailors were trying to flee out of the ship, and had lowered the boat into the sea, pretending that they would lay out anchors from the bow,

31 sa Paulus til centurionen og soldatene: "Hvis ikke disse blir på skipet, kan dere ikke bli reddet."

Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, "Unless these stay in the ship, you can't be saved."

32 Så kuttet soldatene tauene til livbåten og lot den falle av.

Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat, and let it fall off.

33 Mens dagen nærmet seg, oppfordret Paulus alle til å ta mat, og sa: "Dette er den fjortende dag dere venter og faster uten å ha tatt noe.

While the day was coming on, Paul begged them all to take some food, saying, "This day is the fourteenth day that you wait and continue fasting, having taken nothing.

34 Derfor ber jeg dere ta mat, for dette er for deres sikkerhet; ikke et hår vil miste sitt sted fra hodene deres."

Therefore I beg you to take some food, for this is for your safety; for not a hair will perish from any of your heads."

35 Da han hadde sagt dette, tok han brød, takket Gud for alles åsyn, brøt det og begynte å spise.

When he had said this, and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all, and he broke it, and began to eat.

36 Da ble de alle oppmuntret og tok også mat.

Then they all cheered up, and they also took food.

37 I alt var vi to hundre og syttiseks sjeler på skipet.

In all, we were two hundred seventy-six souls on the ship.

38 Da de hadde fått nok mat, lettet de skipet ved å kaste hveten i sjøen.

When they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea.

39 Da det ble dag, kjente de ikke igjen landet, men de la merke til en bukt med en strand, og bestemte seg for å prøve å føre skipet inn dit.

When it was day, they didn't recognize the land, but they noticed a certain bay with a beach, and they decided to try to drive the ship onto it.

40 De kastet av ankrene og lot dem være i sjøen, samtidig som de løste opp styretauene. De heiste forseglet til vinden og satte kursen mot stranden.

Casting off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time untying the rudder ropes. Hoisting up the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach.

41 Men de traff et sted hvor to hav møtes, og skipet grunnstøtte. Baugen satt fast og var ubevegelig, mens akterdelen ble ødelagt av bølgenes kraft.

But coming to a place where two seas met, they ran the vessel aground. The bow struck and remained immovable, but the stern began to break up by the violence of the waves.

42 Soldatene planla å drepe fangene for at ingen av dem skulle svømme bort og rømme.

The soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, so that none of them would swim out and escape.

43 Men centurionen, som ønsket å redde Paulus, hindret dem i deres plan og beordret at de som kunne svømme skulle kaste seg overbord og komme seg til land først.

But the centurion, desiring to save Paul, stopped them from their purpose, and commanded that those who could swim should throw themselves overboard first to go toward the land;

44 De øvrige skulle følge etter, noen på planker, andre på forskjellige deler av skipet. Og slik skjedde det at de alle kom seg trygt i land.

and the rest should follow, some on planks, and some on other things from the ship. So it happened that they all escaped safely to the land.
