Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer, and put fire in it, and laid incense on it, and offered strange fire before Yahweh, which he had not commanded them.

And fire came forth from before Yahweh, and devoured them, and they died before Yahweh.

Da sa Moses til Aron: "Dette er det Herren har talt om, når han sier: 'Jeg vil hellige meg blant dem som kommer nær meg, og for hele folket vil jeg bli æret.'" Aron var stille.

Then Moses said to Aaron, "This is what Yahweh spoke of, saying, "'I will show myself holy to those who come near me, And before all the people I will be glorified.'" Aaron held his peace.

Moses kalte til seg Mishael og Elzafan, sønnene til Ussiel, Arons onkel, og sa til dem: "Kom hit og bær deres brødre bort fra helligdommen ut av leiren."

Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, "Draw near, carry your brothers from before the sanctuary out of the camp."

Så kom de og bar dem bort i deres kapper, ut av leiren, som Moses hadde sagt.

So they drew near, and carried them in their coats out of the camp, as Moses had said.

Moses sa til Aron og Eleazar og til Itamar, hans sønner: "La ikke håret på hodet henge løst, og ikke riv deres klær, for at dere ikke skal dø, og for at han ikke skal bli vred på hele menigheten. La heller deres brødre, hele Israels hus, sørge over den brann som Herren har tent.

Moses said to Aaron, and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his sons, "Don't let the hair of your heads go loose, neither tear your clothes; that you don't die, and that he not be angry with all the congregation: but let your brothers, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which Yahweh has kindled.

Dere skal ikke gå ut fra inngangen til Åpenbaringsteltet, for at dere ikke skal dø, for Herrens salvingsolje er over dere." De gjorde som Moses hadde sagt.

You shall not go out from the door of the Tent of Meeting, lest you die; for the anointing oil of Yahweh is on you." They did according to the word of Moses.

Herren talte til Aron og sa:

Yahweh spoke to Aaron, saying,

"Du og dine sønner med deg skal ikke drikke vin eller sterk drikk når dere går inn i Åpenbaringsteltet, for at dere ikke skal dø. Dette skal være en evig lov for dere gjennom alle slekter,

"Drink no wine nor strong drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the Tent of Meeting, that you don't die: it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations:

og for at dere skal gjøre forskjell mellom det hellige og det vanlige, mellom det urene og det rene,

and that you are to make a distinction between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean;

og for at dere skal lære Israels barn alle de lover som Herren har talt til dem ved Moses."

and that you are to teach the children of Israel all the statutes which Yahweh has spoken to them by Moses."

Moses talte til Aron og til Eleazar og Itamar, hans gjenlevende sønner: "Ta matofferet som er igjen av Herrens ildoffer, og spis det uten surdeig ved alteret, for det er høyhellig,

Moses spoke to Aaron, and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his sons who were left, "Take the meal offering that remains of the offerings of Yahweh made by fire, and eat it without yeast beside the altar; for it is most holy;

og dere skal spise det på et hellig sted, for det er din del og dine sønners del av Herrens ildoffer, for så er det befalt meg.

and you shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your portion, and your sons' portion, of the offerings of Yahweh made by fire: for so I am commanded.

Det brisket som er svaiet, og det lår som er løftet, skal dere spise på et rent sted, du og dine sønner og dine døtre med deg, for de er gitt deg som din del og dine sønners del av Israels barns fredsoffer.

The waved breast and the heaved thigh you shall eat in a clean place, you, and your sons, and your daughters with you: for they are given as your portion, and your sons' portion, out of the sacrifices of the peace offerings of the children of Israel.

Det skal føres frem sammen med fettets ildoffer for å svinges som et svingoffer for Herrens ansikt, og det skal være ditt og dine sønners med deg som en evig del, slik Herren har befalt."

The heaved thigh and the waved breast they shall bring with the offerings made by fire of the fat, to wave it for a wave offering before Yahweh: and it shall be yours, and your sons' with you, as a portion forever; as Yahweh has commanded."

Moses spurte ivrig etter syndofferkjeet, men se, det var brent opp. Han ble vred på Eleazar og Itamar, de gjenlevende sønnene til Aron, og sa,

Moses diligently inquired about the goat of the sin offering, and, behold, it was burned: and he was angry with Eleazar and with Ithamar, the sons of Aaron who were left, saying,

"Hvorfor har dere ikke spist syndofferet på det hellige stedet? For det er høyhellig, og han har gitt det til dere for å bære menighetens synd og gjøre soning for dem for Herrens ansikt.

"Why haven't you eaten the sin offering in the place of the sanctuary, seeing it is most holy, and he has given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before Yahweh?

Se, dets blod ble ikke brakt inn i helligdommen. Dere skulle virkelig ha spist det på det hellige stedet, som jeg har befalt."

Behold, its blood was not brought into the inner part of the sanctuary: you certainly should have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded."

Så talte Aron til Moses: "Se, i dag har de båret frem sitt syndoffer og sitt brennoffer for Herrens ansikt, men slike ting har hendt meg; hvis jeg hadde spist syndofferet i dag, ville det vært til behag for Herrens ansikt?"

Aaron spoke to Moses, "Behold, this day they have offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before Yahweh; and such things as these have happend to me: and if I had eaten the sin offering today, would it have been pleasing in the sight of Yahweh?"

Da Moses hørte det, fant han det godt.

When Moses heard that, it was pleasing in his sight.
