Tro er en tillit til det man håper på, en overbevisning om det man ikke ser.

And faith is of things hoped for a confidence, of matters not seen a conviction,

For det var ved denne tro de eldste fikk vitnesbyrd om.

for in this were the elders testified of;

Ved tro forstår vi at verdens tidsepoker ble skapt gjennom Guds ord, slik at det synlige ikke ble til av noe synlig.

but now they long for a better, that is, an heavenly, wherefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for He did prepare for them a city.

Ved tro ofret Abraham sin sønn Isak da han ble prøvet, han som hadde fått løftene, ga han også den enbårne sønn.

By faith Abraham hath offered up Isaac, being tried, and the only begotten he did offer up who did receive the promises,

Til ham var det sagt: 'I Isak skal din ætt nevnes.'

of whom it was said -- `In Isaac shall a seed be called to thee;'

For han tenkte at Gud endog var mektig til å oppreise fra de døde, derfor fikk han ham også tilbake, som et forbilde.

reckoning that even out of the dead God is able to raise up, whence also in a figure he did receive `him'.

Ved tro velsignet Isak Jakob og Esau om kommende ting.

By faith, concerning coming things, Isaac did bless Jacob and Esau;
