After this, Absalom acquired for himself a chariot, horses, and fifty men to run ahead of him.

Absalom would rise early and stand beside the road to the gate. Whenever a man came with a dispute to bring before the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him and ask, 'Which city are you from?' And the man would answer, 'Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.'

Then Absalom would say to him, 'Look, your claims are good and valid, but there is no one appointed by the king to hear you.'

Absalom fortsatte: «Om bare jeg var dommer i landet, ville enhver som hadde en sak eller tvist, komme til meg, og jeg ville sørge for at han fikk rett.»

And Absalom would add, 'If only I were appointed judge in the land, then every man who has a dispute or case could come to me, and I would ensure he receives justice.'

Whenever a man approached to bow down to him, Absalom would reach out, take hold of him, and kiss him.

Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king for judgment, and he stole the hearts of the people of Israel.

At the end of forty years, Absalom said to the king, 'Please allow me to go to Hebron to fulfill a vow I made to the LORD.'

For your servant made a vow while I was living in Geshur in Aram, saying, ‘If the LORD brings me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the LORD.’

Kongen sa til ham: «Gå i fred.» Så sto han opp og dro til Hebron.

The king said to him, 'Go in peace.' So he got up and went to Hebron.

Men Absalom sendte spioner rundt til alle Israels stammer og sa: «Når dere hører lyden av hornet, skal dere si: ’Absalom er blitt konge i Hebron.’»

Then Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel with this message: 'As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, say, “Absalom is king in Hebron!”'

Sammen med Absalom dro to hundre menn fra Jerusalem som var blitt innbudt. De dro i god tro, uten å vite om noe.

Two hundred men from Jerusalem accompanied Absalom. They had been invited and went innocently, unaware of anything.

Absalom sendte også bud etter Ahitofel fra Giloh, Davids rådgiver, mens han bar fram ofrene. Og sammensvergelsen ble sterkere, og folkets støtte til Absalom vokste.

While he was offering the sacrifices, Absalom also sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his hometown of Giloh. And the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept increasing.

En budbringer kom til David og sa: «Hjertene til Israels menn har vendt seg til Absalom.»

Then a messenger came to David and reported, 'The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom.'

David said to all his servants who were with him in Jerusalem, 'Arise, let us flee, or there will be no escape for us from Absalom. Hurry and leave, or he will quickly overtake us, bring disaster upon us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.'

Kongens tjenere svarte ham: «Alt vår herre kongen bestemmer, står dine tjenere klare til å gjøre.»

The king’s servants replied to him, 'Your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king chooses.'

Så dro kongen og hele hans husstand ut til fots. Men kongen lot ti kvinner, konkubiner, bli igjen for å ta vare på huset.

So the king set out, and all his household followed him on foot. But the king left behind ten concubines to take care of the palace.

The king went out with all the people following him, and they stopped at a place some distance away.

All his servants passed by him, along with all the Kerethites, Pelethites, and six hundred Gittites who had come with him from Gath, marching past in front of the king.

The king said to Ittai the Gittite, 'Why should you go with us too? Go back and stay with the new king, for you are a foreigner and an exile from your homeland.'

‘You only came yesterday, so why should I make you wander with us today? I must go wherever I can. Return and take your brothers with you. May kindness and faithfulness be with you.’

Men Ittai svarte kongen: «Så sant Herren lever, og så sant min herre kongen lever: Der min herre kongen er, enten for død eller for liv, der skal også din tjener være.»

But Ittai answered the king, 'As surely as the LORD lives and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be—whether for death or for life—there your servant will be.'

David sa til Ittai: «Gå videre.» Så gikk Ittai fra Gat videre med alle sine menn og barna som var med ham.

David said to Ittai, 'Go ahead, cross over.' So Ittai the Gittite and all his men and their families crossed over with him.

Og hele landet gråt høyt mens alle folkene marsjerte forbi. Kongen krysset Kedron-bekken, og alle folkene dro ut på veien mot ørkenen.

The whole countryside wept aloud as the king and all the people passed by. They crossed the Kidron Valley, and the people moved on toward the wilderness.

Også Sadok var der, og alle levittene som bar Guds paktsark. De satte ned Guds ark, og Abiatar steg opp til hele folket var ferdige med å gå ut av byen.

Behold, Zadok was there too, and with him were all the Levites carrying the Ark of the Covenant of God. They set down the Ark of God, and Abiathar went up until all the people had finished crossing out of the city.

Then the king said to Zadok, 'Take the Ark of God back to the city. If I find favor in the LORD’s eyes, He will bring me back and let me see it and its dwelling place again.'

Men hvis han sier: ’Jeg har ingen glede i deg,’ da er jeg her. La ham gjøre med meg som synes godt i hans øyne.»

'But if He says, “I have no delight in you,” here I am—let Him do to me whatever seems good to Him.'

Kongen fortsatte til Sadok, presten: «Er du ikke en seer? Vend tilbake til byen i fred, og ta med deg din sønn Ahimaas og Jonatan, sønn av Abiatar, begge deres sønner.

The king also said to Zadok the priest, 'Do you not see? Go back to the city in peace, with your son Ahimaaz and Jonathan, the son of Abiathar, your two sons with you.'

Se, jeg vil vente ved vadestedene i ørkenen til det kommer ord fra dere for å informere meg.»

'Look, I will wait in the wilderness plains until I receive a message from you to tell me what to do.'

So Zadok and Abiathar took the Ark of God back to Jerusalem and stayed there.

David gikk oppover Oljeberget, mens han gråt, dekket hodet sitt og gikk barføtt. Og alle folkene som var med ham, dekket hodene sine, og de gikk opp mens de gråt.

David continued up the ascent of the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went. His head was covered, and he was walking barefoot. All the people with him also covered their heads and were weeping as they went up.

David fikk beskjed om at Ahitofel var med i sammensvergelsen sammen med Absalom. Da sa David: «Gjør, Herre, Ahitofels råd til dårskap.»

Then someone told David, 'Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.' So David prayed, 'O LORD, turn Ahithophel’s counsel into foolishness.'

Da David kom til toppen, hvor han pleide å tilbe Gud, kom Hushai fra Arkittene mot ham, med klærne revet i stykker og jord på hodet.

When David reached the summit where he worshiped God, Hushai the Archite met him. His robe was torn, and there was dirt on his head.

David said to him, 'If you come with me, you will be a burden to me.'

'But if you return to the city and say to Absalom, “Your servant will serve you, O king; I was your father’s servant in the past, but now I will be your servant,” then you can thwart Ahithophel’s advice for me.'

Look, their two sons, Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok, and Jonathan, the son of Abiathar, are there with them. Send me everything you hear through them.

Så dro Hushai, Davids venn, inn i byen, akkurat da Absalom kom inn i Jerusalem.

So Hushai, David's friend, arrived in the city just as Absalom was entering Jerusalem.
