When David had gone a little beyond the summit, Ziba, the servant of Mephibosheth, met him. He had with him a pair of saddled donkeys loaded with two hundred loaves of bread, one hundred clusters of raisins, one hundred cakes of summer fruit, and a wineskin full of wine.

Kongen spurte Siba: «Hva skal du med alt dette?» Siba svarte: «Eslene er til kongens hus for å ri på, brødet og frukten er til tjenerne som mat, og vinen er til å drikke for dem som er trette ute i ørkenen.»

The king asked Ziba, "Why have you brought these?" Ziba answered, "The donkeys are for the king's household to ride on, the bread and summer fruit are for the young men to eat, and the wine is for those who become weary in the wilderness to drink."

Kongen spurte: «Hvor er din herres sønn?» Siba svarte kongen: «Han ble igjen i Jerusalem, for han sa: 'I dag vil Israels hus gi meg min farfar Sauls kongedømme tilbake.'»

The king then asked, "Where is your master’s grandson?" Ziba replied to the king, "He is staying in Jerusalem because he said, 'Today the house of Israel will restore to me my grandfather’s kingdom.'"

Da sa kongen til Siba: «Alt som tilhører Mefibosjet, er ditt.» Siba sa: «Jeg bøyer meg for deg, min konge. Måtte jeg finne nåde i din øyne, min herre konge!»

Then the king declared to Ziba, "Everything that belonged to Mephibosheth is now yours." Ziba said, "I humbly bow before you. May I find favor in your eyes, my lord the king."

Da kong David kom til Bahurim, kom det ut en mann fra Sauls slekt ved navn Sjimi, sønn av Gera. Mens han kom ut, forbannet han.

When King David reached Bahurim, a man from the family of Saul’s household came out, cursing as he approached. His name was Shimei, son of Gera.

Han kastet stein på David og alle kongens tjenere, selv om hele folket og alle de modige mennene var på hans høyre og venstre side.

He threw stones at David and all the servants of King David, even though all the people and the mighty warriors surrounded him on his right and left.

Sjimi sa mens han forbannet: «Gå bort, gå bort, du blodige mann, du onde mann!»

As he cursed, Shimei shouted, "Get out! Get out, you man of bloodshed, you worthless man!

Herren har vendt tilbake over deg alt blodet fra Sauls hus, som du har erstattet som konge, og Herren har gitt riket i din sønn Absaloms hånd. Se, du er nå i din egen ondskap, fordi du er en blodig mann.»

The Lord has repaid you for all the bloodshed in the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned. The Lord has given the kingdom into the hand of your son Absalom. You are now caught in your own evil, for you are a man of bloodshed."

Da sa Abisjai, sønn av Seruja, til kongen: «Hvorfor skal denne døde hunden få forbannet min herre kongen? La meg gå over og slå hodet av ham.»

Then Abishai, son of Zeruiah, said to the king, "Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head!"

Men kongen sa: «Hva har jeg med dere å gjøre, dere Serujas sønner? La ham forbanne! Hvis Herren har sagt til ham: 'Forbann David!', hvem kan da si: 'Hvorfor gjorde du det?'»

But the king replied, "What does this have to do with you, sons of Zeruiah? If he is cursing because the Lord told him to curse David, who can ask, 'Why did you do this?'"

David sa til Abisjai og til alle sine tjenere: «Se, min egen sønn, som kom fra mitt indre, søker mitt liv. Hvor mye mer da denne benjaminitt! La ham være, og la ham forbanne, for Herren har befalt ham det.

David then said to Abishai and all his servants, "Look, my own son who came from my own body is trying to take my life. How much more now this Benjamite! Leave him alone; let him curse, for the Lord has told him to.

Kanskje Herren vil se til min nød og gi meg godt igjen i stedet for hans forbannelse denne dagen.»

Perhaps the Lord will look upon my affliction and repay me with good for the curses I am receiving today.

Så David og hans menn fortsatte på veien mens Sjimi gikk langs fjellet på den andre siden, forbannende mens han gikk, kastet stein og spredde støv.

So David and his men continued along the road, while Shimei kept pace with him on the hillside opposite, cursing and throwing stones and dirt at him.

Kongen og hele folket som var med ham, kom endelig frem, trette, og der fant de hvile.

The king and all the people with him arrived exhausted, and he refreshed himself there.

I mellomtiden kom Absalom og hele folket, alle menn av Israel, til Jerusalem, og Akhitofel var med ham.

Meanwhile, Absalom and all the men of Israel came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel was with him.

Da Hushai, arkittens venn, kom til Absalom, sa Hushai til Absalom: «Leve kongen! Leve kongen!»

When Hushai the Arkite, David's friend, came to Absalom, he said to him, "Long live the king! Long live the king!"

Absalom spurte Hushai: «Er dette din troskap mot din venn? Hvorfor dro du ikke med din venn?»

Absalom said to Hushai, "Is this the loyalty you show your friend? Why didn’t you go with your friend?"

Hushai svarte Absalom: «Nei, den som Herren og dette folket og alle Israels menn har utvalgt, hos ham vil jeg være, og hos ham vil jeg bli.»

Hushai said to Absalom, "No, the one chosen by the Lord, by these people, and all the men of Israel—him I will serve, and with him I will remain.

Og for det andre, hvem skulle jeg tjene? Er det ikke hans sønn? Som jeg har tjent din far, slik vil jeg tjene deg.»

Besides, whom should I serve? Should I not serve his son? Just as I served your father, so I will serve you."

Da sa Absalom til Ahitofel: «Gi råd om hva vi skal gjøre.»

Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, "Give us your advice. What should we do?"

Ahitofel sa til Absalom: «Gå inn til din fars konkubiner, som han har latt tilbake for å vokte huset. Da vil hele Israel høre at du er blitt foraktet av din far, og styrken til alle som er med deg, vil øke.»

Ahithophel answered, "Sleep with your father’s concubines, whom he left to care for the palace. Then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself obnoxious to your father, and the hands of everyone with you will be strengthened."

Så slo de opp et telt for Absalom på taket, og Absalom gikk inn til sin fars konkubiner i all Israels påsyn.

So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he slept with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.

På den tiden var det slik at Ahitofels råd ble betraktet som om en hadde spurt om Guds ord. Slik var alle Ahitofels råd både for David og for Absalom.

Now the advice Ahithophel gave in those days was like someone inquiring of God. Such was all of Ahithophel’s advice to both David and Absalom.
