Hungersnøden var svært alvorlig i landet.

Now the famine was severe in the land.

Da de hadde spist opp maten de hadde brakt fra Egypt, sa deres far til dem: «Gå tilbake og kjøp litt mat til oss.»

When they had finished eating the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go back and buy a little more food for us.”

Juda svarte ham: «Mannen advarte oss strengt og sa: ‘Dere skal ikke se ansiktet mitt hvis ikke deres bror er med dere.’»

But Judah said to him, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.’

«Hvis du sender vår bror med oss, vil vi dra ned og kjøpe mat til deg.

If you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy food for you.

Men hvis du ikke sender ham, går vi ikke ned, for mannen sa til oss: ‘Dere skal ikke se mitt ansikt uten at deres bror er med.’»

But if you do not send him, we will not go down, for the man said to us, ‘You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.’

Israel sa: «Hvorfor har dere gjort meg denne skade og fortalt mannen at dere hadde en annen bror?»

Israel said, “Why did you bring this trouble on me by telling the man that you had another brother?”

De svarte: «Mannen spurte nøye om oss og vår slekt: ‘Lever deres far ennå? Har dere en annen bror?’ Vi svarte ham som han spurte. Kunne vi vite at han ville si: ‘Bring deres bror hit’?»

They replied, “The man kept asking us about ourselves and our family, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ We simply answered his questions. How could we have known he would say, ‘Bring your brother down here’?”

Og Juda sa til sin far Israel: «Send gutten med meg, så vi kan stå opp og dra, så vi kan leve og ikke dø, både vi, du og våre små.

Then Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the boy with me, and we will get up and go, so that we and you and our children may live and not die.

Jeg, jeg skal være hans garantist. Fra min hånd skal du kreve ham tilbake. Hvis jeg ikke bringer ham tilbake til deg og stiller ham foran deg, skal jeg være skyldig overfor deg for alltid.

I will be a guarantee for him; you can hold me personally responsible. If I do not bring him back to you and set him here before you, I will bear the blame before you all my life.

Hadde vi ikke nølt, kunne vi nå ha vært fram og tilbake to ganger.»

If we had not delayed, we could have gone and returned twice by now.”

Deretter sa deres far Israel til dem: «Hvis det må være slik, så gjør dette: Ta litt av landets beste produkter i sekkene deres og før dem som gave til mannen – litt balsam, litt honning, krydder, myrra, pistasjnøtter og mandler.

Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: Take some of the best products of the land in your bags and carry them as a gift to the man—a little balm, a little honey, spices, myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds.

Ta også dobbelt så mye penger med dere, og før pengene som ble lagt tilbake i sekkene deres, med dere igjen. Kanskje det var en feil.

Take double the silver with you, and also return the silver that was put back into your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake.

Ta også deres bror, og reis tilbake til mannen.

Take your brother also, and get up and return to the man.

Må Gud Den Allmektige gi dere barmhjertighet for mannen, så han lar dere få deres andre bror tilbake, samt Benjamin. Og jeg, hvis jeg skal bli fratatt dem, så blir jeg fratatt dem.»

May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, so that he will release your other brother and Benjamin. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.

Så tok mennene denne gaven, dobbelt så mye penger og Benjamin. De dro ned til Egypt og presenterte seg for Josef.

So the men took the gifts, double the amount of silver, and Benjamin. They got up, went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.

Da Josef så Benjamin sammen med dem, sa han til sin husholder: «Ta disse mennene til huset mitt, slakt et dyr og gjør det klart, for de skal spise sammen med meg ved middagstid.»

When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, "Take these men to my house, slaughter an animal, and prepare a meal, for they will eat with me at noon."

Mannen gjorde som Josef sa og tok dem til Josefs hus.

The steward did as Joseph said and brought the men to Joseph's house.

Mennene ble redde fordi de ble ført til Josefs hus, og de sa: «Det er på grunn av pengene som ble lagt tilbake i sekkene våre ved første gang at vi blir brakt hit. Nå vil han angripe oss, overfalle oss og gjøre oss til slaver, sammen med våre esler.»

But the men were afraid when they were taken to Joseph's house. They said, "We were brought here because of the silver that was returned to our sacks the first time. He plans to trap us, attack us, take us as slaves, and seize our donkeys."

De gikk derfor fram til mannen som hadde ansvaret for Josefs hus og snakket med ham ved inngangen til huset.

So they approached Joseph's steward and spoke to him at the entrance of the house.

De sa: «Herre, vi kom første gang for å kjøpe mat.

They said, "Please, my lord, we came down here before to buy food.

Men da vi kom til åstedet der vi overnattet, åpnet vi sekkene våre, og der var pengene til hver mann – fullvektige i munningen av sekkene våre. Derfor har vi brakt dem tilbake.

But when we reached our lodging place and opened our sacks, there was each man's silver in the mouth of his sack, the exact weight. So we have brought it back with us.

Og vi har også tatt med oss mer penger for å kjøpe mat. Vi vet ikke hvem som la pengene i våre sekker.»

We have also brought additional silver with us to buy food. We don't know who put our silver in our sacks."

Han svarte: «Vær i fred, frykt ikke. Deres Gud og deres fars Gud har gitt dere en skatt i sekkene deres. Jeg fikk pengene deres.» Og han førte Simeon ut til dem.

He said, "Peace be with you. Do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks. I received your silver." Then he brought Simeon out to them.

Mannen førte dem inn i Josefs hus, ga dem vann til å vaske føttene, og ga mat til deres esler.

The steward brought the men into Joseph's house, gave them water, and they washed their feet. He also provided fodder for their donkeys.

Så gjorde de klar gaven til Josef skulle komme ved middagstid, for de hadde hørt at de skulle spise der.

They prepared their gift for Joseph's arrival at noon because they had heard that they were going to eat there.

Da Josef kom til huset, gav de ham gaven de hadde med seg, og de bøyde seg for ham til jorden.

When Joseph came home, they presented him the gift they had brought with them and bowed to the ground before him.

Han spurte dem om de hadde det godt, og sa: «Står det vel til med deres gamle far som dere fortalte om? Lever han enda?»

He greeted them and asked, "How is your father, the old man you told me about? Is he still alive?"

De svarte: «Ja, vår tjener, vår far, har det godt og lever enda.» De bøyde seg og kastet seg ned for ham.

They replied, "Your servant our father is well. He is still alive." And they bowed down, prostrating themselves before him.

Da han løftet blikket og så sin bror Benjamin, sin morens sønn, sa han: «Er dette deres yngste bror, som dere fortalte meg om?» Og han sa: «Må Gud gi deg sin nåde, min sønn.»

Looking up, Joseph saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and asked, "Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?" Then he said, "May God be gracious to you, my son."

Josef skyndte seg ut, for hjertet hans var fylt av følelser for broren, og han søkte et sted hvor han kunne gråte. Han gikk inn i sitt private kammer og gråt der.

Joseph was deeply moved at the sight of his brother and hurried out to find a place to weep. He went into his private room and wept there.

Deretter vasket han ansiktet sitt, kom ut og behersket seg, og sa: «Sett fram maten!»

After washing his face, he came out and, controlling himself, said, "Serve the food."

De satte fram maten for ham alene, for dem alene, og for de egypterne som spiste sammen med ham, for egypterne kunne ikke spise sammen med hebreerne, da det var en vederstyggelighet for egypterne.

They served Joseph separately, the brothers separately, and the Egyptians who ate with him separately, because Egyptians could not eat with Hebrews, for that was detestable to them.

De satt foran ham – den eldste etter sin førstefødselsrett, og den yngste etter sin alder; og mennene undret seg på hverandre.

The men were seated before him in order of their ages, from the firstborn to the youngest, and they looked at each other in astonishment.

Han lot dem få porsjoner fra sitt eget bord, men Benjamins porsjon var fem ganger så stor som de andres. De spiste og drakk sammen med ham og ble glade.

Joseph sent portions from his table to them, but Benjamin's portion was five times as much as anyone else's. So they feasted and drank freely with him.
