Cry aloud, do not hold back! Raise your voice like a trumpet; announce to my people their rebellion and to the house of Jacob their sins.

2 Dag etter dag søker de meg og ønsker å kjenne mine veier, som et folk som gjør rettferd og ikke forlater sin Guds lov. De spør meg om rettferdige dommer, de ønsker å nærme seg Gud.

Day after day they seek me and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that practiced righteousness and did not forsake the justice of their God. They ask me for righteous judgments and delight in drawing near to God.

3 Hvorfor faster vi og ser du det ikke? Hvorfor plager vi vår sjel og merker du det ikke? Men på fastedagen søker dere egen nytte og undertrykker alle deres arbeidere.

'Why have we fasted,' they say, 'and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?' Yet on the day of your fasting, you pursue your own desires and oppress all your workers.

4 Deres faste ender i konflikt og krangel, og i å slå med ondskaps slag. Dere faster ikke som på denne dag for å la deres stemme bli hørt i høyden.

Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high.

5 Er dette den faste jeg ønsker, en dag for å plage menneskets sjel? Er det å bøye hodet som en siv og legge seg i sekk og aske? Kaller du dette en faste, en dag som behager Herren?

Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves? Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?

6 Er ikke dette fasten jeg ønsker: å løse ondskapens lenker, å bryte åket, å sette de undertrykte fri og å bryte hvert åk i stykker?

Is this not the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loosen the chains of injustice, to untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free, and to break every yoke?

7 Er det ikke å dele ditt brød med de sultne og ta de hjemløse stakkarer inn i huset? Når du ser den nakne, skal du kle ham, og du skal ikke skjule deg for dine egne slektninger.

Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and to bring the homeless poor into your house? When you see the naked, clothe them, and do not hide yourself from your own flesh and blood.

8 Da skal ditt lys bryte frem som morgenrøden, og din helbredelse skal skyte frem med hast. Din rettferdighet skal gå foran deg, og Herrens herlighet skal samle deg opp.

Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear. Your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.

9 Da skal du kalle, og Herren skal svare. Du skal rope, og han skal si: 'Her er jeg.' Hvis du tar bort åket fra din midte, fingerpekingen og det onde talet,

Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: 'Here I am.' If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing finger, and malicious talk.

10 og hvis du gir av ditt eget gode til de sultne og metter den elendige sjelen, da skal ditt lys skinne i mørket, og din natt skal være som høylys dag.

If you offer yourself to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like noonday.

11 Herren skal lede deg hele tiden og gi deg alt godt i tørre områder. Han skal styrke ditt legeme, og du skal bli som en vannrik hage, som en kilde der vannet aldri svikter.

The Lord will guide you continually, and he will satisfy your soul in parched places and strengthen your bones. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.

12 Dine etterkommere skal bygge opp igjen de gamle ruinene, du skal reise opp grunnvollene fra mange slekter. Du skal kalles reparatør av brudd, gjenoppretter av stier til å bo på.

Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and raise up the foundations of past generations. You will be called the Repairer of Broken Walls, the Restorer of Streets to Live In.

13 Hvis du holder din fot tilbake fra å tråkke på sabbaten, fra å gjøre dine egne fornøyelser på min hellige dag, og kaller sabbaten en glede, en ærverdig dag for Herren, og ærer den ved å ikke følge dine egne veier eller søke dine egne fornøyelser eller snakke tomme ord,

If you keep your foot from breaking the Sabbath, from doing as you please on my holy day, and you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord's holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way or doing as you please or speaking idle words,

14 da skal du glede deg i Herren, og jeg vil føre deg til å ri på jordens høyder, og jeg vil gi deg å nyte din far Jakobs arv. For Herrens munn har talt.

then you will find your joy in the Lord, and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of Jacob your ancestor. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.
