1 Israels barn gjorde igjen det som var ondt i Herrens øyne, og Herren overga dem i filisternes hånd i førti år.

The Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord handed them over to the Philistines for forty years.

2 Det var en mann fra Sora, av Dans slekt, som het Manoah, og hans kone var ufruktbar og hadde ikke født barn.

There was a certain man from Zorah, from the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah. His wife was barren and had no children.

3 Herrens engel viste seg for kvinnen og sa til henne: «Se, du er ufruktbar og har ikke født barn, men du skal bli gravid og føde en sønn.

The angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, "Behold, you are barren and have not had children, but you will conceive and give birth to a son."

4 Nå må du være forsiktig og ikke drikke vin eller sterke drikker, og ikke spise noe urent.

Now therefore, be careful! Do not drink wine or strong drink, and do not eat anything unclean.

5 For se, du skal bli gravid og føde en sønn. Ingen barberkniv skal komme på hans hode, for gutten skal være en nasireer, innviet til Gud, fra mors liv. Han skal begynne å frelse Israel fra filisternes hånd.

For you will conceive and give birth to a son, and no razor is to touch his head, because the boy will be a Nazirite, dedicated to God from birth. He will begin to rescue Israel from the power of the Philistines.

6 Kvinnen gikk til sin mann og sa: «En gudsmann kom til meg; han så ut som en Herrens engel, veldig skremmende. Jeg spurte ham ikke hvor han kom fra, og han fortalte meg ikke sitt navn.

Then the woman went to her husband and told him, "A man of God came to me. His appearance was like that of an angel of God, very awe-inspiring. I did not ask him where he was from, and he did not tell me his name.

7 Men han sa til meg: ‘Se, du skal bli gravid og føde en sønn. Nå må du ikke drikke vin eller sterke drikker, og ikke spise noe urent, for gutten skal være en nasireer til Gud fra mors liv og til sin død.’»

But he said to me, 'Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. Now, do not drink wine or strong drink, and do not eat anything unclean, for the boy will be a Nazirite to God from the womb until the day of his death.'

8 Manoah ba til Herren og sa: «Herre, la gudsmannen du sendte komme til oss igjen og lære oss hva vi skal gjøre med gutten som skal fødes.»

Then Manoah prayed to the Lord, saying, "Please, Lord, let the man of God you sent come back to us and teach us what we are to do with the boy who is to be born."

9 Gud hørte Manoahs bønn, og gudsmannen kom igjen til kvinnen da hun satt ute på marken, men Manoah, hennes mann, var ikke med henne.

God listened to Manoah’s prayer, and the angel of God came again to the woman while she was sitting in the field. But her husband Manoah was not with her.

10 Kvinnen skyndte seg og løp til mannen sin og sa til ham: «Se, mannen som kom til meg den dagen, har vist seg for meg igjen.»

The woman hurried and ran to tell her husband, saying to him, "Behold, the man who came to me the other day has appeared to me again."

11 Manoah reiste seg, fulgte sin kone og kom til mannen. Han sa til ham: «Er du mannen som talte til min kone?» Og han sa: «Ja, det er jeg.»

Manoah got up, followed his wife, and came to the man and said to him, "Are you the man who spoke to my wife?" And he said, "I am."

12 Da sa Manoah: «Når dine ord går i oppfyllelse, hva skal da være guttens livsregel og gjerning?»

Then Manoah said, "Now, when your words come true, what will be the rules for the boy's life and work?"

13 Herrens engel sa til Manoah: «Kvinnen må følge alt jeg har sagt til henne.

The angel of the Lord said to Manoah, "The woman must obey everything I told her.

14 Hun må ikke spise noe som kommer fra vintreet, og ikke drikke vin eller sterke drikker, og ikke spise noe urent. Alt jeg har befalt henne, må hun holde.»

She must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine, nor drink wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I commanded her."

15 Manoah sa til Herrens engel: «La oss holde deg tilbake så vi kan tilberede en geitekilling for deg.»

Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, "Please stay here, and we will prepare a young goat for you."

16 Herrens engel sa til Manoah: «Selv om du holder meg tilbake, vil jeg ikke spise av ditt brød. Men hvis du vil ofre et brennoffer, må du gjøre det for Herren.» For Manoah visste ikke at det var Herrens engel.

The angel of the Lord said to Manoah, "Even if you detain me, I will not eat your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, you must offer it to the Lord." (Manoah did not know he was an angel of the Lord.)

17 Manoah sa til Herrens engel: «Hva er ditt navn, så vi kan ære deg når dine ord blir oppfylt?»

Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, "What is your name, so that we may honor you when your words come true?"

18 Herrens engel svarte ham: «Hvorfor spør du om mitt navn? Det er underfullt.»

The angel of the Lord said to him, "Why do you ask my name? It is beyond understanding."

19 Så tok Manoah geitekillingen og matofferet og ofret det på klippen til Herren; og Herren gjorde underfulle ting mens Manoah og hans kone så på.

So Manoah took the young goat and the grain offering and offered them on a rock to the Lord, and He did a wondrous thing while Manoah and his wife watched.

20 Da flammen steg opp fra alteret mot himmelen, steg Herrens engel opp i alterets flamme. Da Manoah og hans kone så dette, kastet de seg ned med ansiktet mot jorden.

When the flame rose from the altar toward heaven, the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar. Seeing this, Manoah and his wife fell facedown to the ground.

21 Herrens engel viste seg ikke mer for Manoah og hans kone. Da forsto Manoah at det var Herrens engel.

The angel of the Lord did not appear again to Manoah and his wife. Then Manoah realized that he was the angel of the Lord.

22 Manoah sa til sin kone: «Vi skal visselig dø, for vi har sett Gud.»

Manoah said to his wife, "We are sure to die, because we have seen God!"

23 Men hans kone sa til ham: «Hvis Herren hadde ønsket å drepe oss, ville han ikke ha tatt imot brennoffer og matoffer fra våre hender, eller latt oss se alle disse tingene, eller gitt oss slike beskjeder.»

But his wife said to him, "If the Lord had intended to kill us, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from our hands, nor shown us all these things, nor let us hear such things now."

24 Kvinnen fødte en sønn og kalte ham Samson. Gutten vokste, og Herren velsignet ham.

The woman gave birth to a son and named him Samson. The boy grew, and the Lord blessed him.

25 Herrens Ånd begynte å røre ham i Dans leir, mellom Sora og Eshtaol.

The Spirit of the Lord began to stir him while he was in Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.
