1 Jerubba'al, som også er Gideon, sto tidlig opp med hele den troppen som var med ham. De slo leir ved Harodskilden, mens midianittenes leir hadde plass nord for Gibeat-Moreh i dalen.

Early in the morning, Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people with him set up camp beside the spring of Harod. Meanwhile, the camp of Midian was to the north of them, by the hill of Moreh in the valley.

2 Herren sa til Gideon: 'Troppen som er med deg, er for stor til at jeg kan overgi midianittene i deres hender, ellers vil Israel kunne skryte overfor meg og si at det var deres egen hånd som reddet dem.'

The LORD said to Gideon, "You have too many people with you for me to hand Midian over to them, lest Israel boast against me, claiming, 'My own strength has delivered me.'

3 Derfor, rop nå ut foran folkets ører: 'Den som er redd og engstelig, kan vende hjem igjen.' Omtrent tjue to tusen menn vendte tilbake, mens ti tusen ble igjen.

Now therefore, announce to the people: 'Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and depart from Mount Gilead.'" So, twenty-two thousand men returned, but ten thousand remained.

4 Herren sa til Gideon: 'Det er fortsatt for mange menn. Ta dem ned til vannet, og jeg vil prøve dem for deg der. De jeg sier skal gå med deg, skal gå med deg, og hver den jeg sier ikke skal gå med deg, skal ikke gå.'

Then the LORD said to Gideon, "There are still too many people. Take them down to the water, and there I will test them for you. Whoever I say, 'This one shall go with you,' he shall go; and whoever I say, 'This one shall not go with you,' he shall not go."

5 Så førte han troppen ned til vannet. Herren sa til Gideon: 'Alle som lepjer vannet med tungen som en hund, skal du sette til side. Likeledes de som bøyer seg ned på knærne for å drikke.'

So Gideon brought the people down to the water. There the LORD said to him, "Separate those who lap the water with their tongues, as a dog laps, from those who kneel down to drink."

6 Antallet av dem som lepjet vannet, ved å bringe hånden til munnen, var tre hundre menn. Resten av troppen bøyde seg ned på knærne for å drikke.

The number of those who lapped with their hands to their mouths was three hundred men. All the rest of the people knelt to drink water.

7 Herren sa til Gideon: 'Med de tre hundre menn som lepjet, vil jeg redde dere og gi midianittene i din hånd. La resten av troppen gå hver til sitt sted.'

The LORD said to Gideon, "With the three hundred men who lapped, I will save you and hand Midian over to you. Let all the others go home."

8 Så tok de forsyningene og trompetene fra folkets hender. Alle de andre israelittene ble sendt til sine telt, men de tre hundre mennene beholdt han hos seg. Midianittenes leir lå nedenfor i dalen.

So the three hundred men took provisions and their trumpets. The rest of the men of Israel were sent away, each to his own home, but Gideon kept the three hundred men. Meanwhile, the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.

9 Den natten sa Herren til ham: 'Reis deg og gå ned til leiren, for jeg har overgitt den i din hånd.'

That night the LORD said to him, "Get up and go down against the camp, for I have given it into your hands.

10 Men hvis du er redd for å gå ned, kan du gå ned til leiren sammen med din tjener Pura.

But if you are afraid to go down, take your servant Purah with you and go down to the camp.

11 Så vil du høre hva de sier, og etterpå vil du få styrke til å gå ned til leiren.' Han gikk ned sammen med tjeneren Pura til utkanten av de væpnede mennene som var i leiren.

Listen to what they are saying, and afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp." So he and his servant Purah went down to the edge of the armed men who were in the camp.

12 Midianittene, amalekittene og alle østfolkene lå spredt i dalen, så mange som gresshopper, og deres kameler var uten tall, så mange som sandene ved havets bredde.

Midian, Amalek, and all the people of the east were lying in the valley as thick as locusts. Their camels were too numerous to count, like the sand on the seashore.

13 Da Gideon kom dit, var det en mann som fortalte sin venn om en drøm han hadde hatt: 'Jeg drømte om en byggkake som kom rullende ned i midianittenes leir. Den traff et telt så det veltet og lå flatt.'

When Gideon arrived, he overheard a man telling his companion about a dream. He said, "Listen, I had a dream: a round loaf of barley bread tumbled into the Midianite camp, struck a tent with such force that it collapsed and fell completely flat."

14 Hans venn svarte: 'Dette kan ikke bety annet enn sverdet til Gideon, Joasj sønn, en mann fra Israel. Gud har gitt Midian og hele leiren i hans hånd.'

His companion responded, "This can only mean the sword of Gideon son of Joash, a man of Israel. God has delivered Midian and the entire camp into his hands."

15 Da Gideon hørte drømmen og tydningen av den, tilba han. Han vendte tilbake til Israels leir og sa: 'Stå opp, for Herren har gitt midianittenes leir i deres hender.'

When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down in worship. He returned to the Israelite camp and said, "Get up! The LORD has given the Midianite camp into your hands."

16 Han delte de tre hundre mennene i tre grupper. Han ga dem alle trompeter og tomme krukker med fakler inne i krukkene.

Gideon divided the three hundred men into three groups. He placed trumpets and empty jars, with torches inside the jars, into the hands of all of them.

17 Han sa til dem: 'Se på meg og gjør som jeg gjør. Når jeg kommer til utkanten av leiren, skal dere gjøre det samme som jeg.'

He said to them, "Watch me and do as I do. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do.

18 Når jeg og alle de med meg blåser i trompetene, da skal også dere blåse i trompetene rundt hele leiren og rope: For Herren og for Gideon!'

When I and all who are with me blow our trumpets, then you also blow your trumpets all around the camp and shout, 'For the LORD and for Gideon!'"

19 Gideon og de hundre mennene som var med ham, kom til utkanten av leiren ved begynnelsen av midtvakten, akkurat da de hadde stilt ut vaktpostene. De blåste i trompetene og brakk krukkene de hadde i hendene.

Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the guards had been changed. They blew their trumpets and smashed the jars in their hands.

20 De tre gruppene blåste i trompetene og slo i stykker krukkene. De holdt faklene i venstre hånd og trompetene i høyre hånd for å blåse i dem og ropte: 'Sverd for Herren og for Gideon!'

The three groups blew their trumpets and broke the jars. Holding the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands, they shouted, "A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!"

21 Hver mann stod på sin plass rundt leiren, men alle i leiren begynte å løpe. De skrek og flyktet.

Each man stood in his place around the camp, and the Midianites ran, crying out as they fled.

22 Da de tre hundre trompetene lød, satte Herren hver manns sverd mot hans kamerat over hele leiren. Leiren flyktet til Bet Hashitta, mot Serera, til grensen av Abel Mehola ved Tabbath.

When the three hundred trumpets sounded, the LORD caused the men throughout the camp to turn on each other with their swords. The army fled to Beth Shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah near Tabbath.

23 Menn fra Israel ble kalt ut fra Naftali, fra Asjer og fra hele Manasse, og de forfulgte midianittene.

The men of Israel from Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh were called out, and they pursued the Midianites.

24 Gideon sendte bud ut over hele Efraims fjellområde og sa: 'Kom ned mot midianittene og avskjær dem ved vannkildene helt til Bet Bara og Jordan!' Efraims menn ble kalt ut, og de avskar vannene helt til Bet Bara og Jordan.

Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying, "Come down and attack the Midianites. Capture the waters around Beth Barah and the Jordan." So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they secured the waters as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan.

25 De tok to av midianitthøvdingene, Oreb og Zeeb. De drepte Oreb ved Oreb-klippen og Zeeb ved Zeeb-vinpressen. De forfulgte midianittene og brakte hodene av Oreb og Zeeb til Gideon fra den andre siden av Jordan.

They captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued the Midianites and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, across the Jordan.
