The men of Ephraim said to Gideon, 'What is this thing you have done to us by not calling us when you went to fight against Midian?' And they argued with him forcefully.

But Gideon replied to them, 'What have I accomplished compared to you? Aren’t the gleanings of Ephraim’s harvest better than the full harvest of Abiezer?'

God gave the leaders of Midian—Oreb and Zeeb—into your hands. What was I able to do compared to you?' At this, their anger toward him subsided when he said this.

Then Gideon and his three hundred men, exhausted yet pursuing, came to the Jordan and crossed it.

He said to the men of Succoth, 'Please give loaves of bread to the people who are following me, for they are exhausted, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.'

6 Men lederne av Sukkot svarte: «Har du allerede Seba og Salmunna i din hånd, så vi skulle gi brød til dine soldater?»

But the leaders of Succoth replied, 'Are Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hands, that we should give bread to your army?'

7 Gideon svarte: «Derfor, når Herren gir Seba og Salmunna i min hånd, vil jeg slå dere med ørkenens torner og brier.»

So Gideon said, 'Very well, when the Lord has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hands, I will tear your flesh with thorns of the wilderness and briars.'

8 Han gikk derfra opp til Penuel og sa det samme til dem. Men mennene i Penuel svarte ham slik mennene i Sukkot hadde svart.

From there he went up to Penuel and made the same request of them, but they answered him just as the men of Succoth had.

9 Så sa han også til mennene i Penuel: «Når jeg kommer tilbake i fred, skal jeg rive ned dette tårnet.»

So he said to the men of Penuel, 'When I return in peace, I will tear down this tower.'

10 Nå var Seba og Salmunna i Karkor, sammen med deres hær på omkring femten tusen menn, som var de eneste overlevende fra hele hæren til Østens sønner. Hundre og tjue tusen menn som bar sverd, var falt.

Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army, about fifteen thousand men, all that was left of the army of the sons of the east. One hundred twenty thousand sword-wielding men had fallen.

11 Gideon dro opp veien mot de som bor i teltene, øst for Nobah og Jogbehah, og slo leiren som lå der trygg i tillit.

Gideon went up by the route of the tent dwellers east of Nobah and Jogbehah and attacked the camp while the army was unprepared.

Zebah and Zalmunna fled, but Gideon pursued them. He captured the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and threw the entire army into a panic.

He captured a young man from Succoth and questioned him, and the young man wrote down for him the names of the leaders of Succoth and its elders—seventy-seven men.

15 Så kom han til mennene i Sukkot og sa: «Se, her er Seba og Salmunna, som dere hånte meg med og sa: 'Har du allerede Seba og Salmunna i din hånd, så vi skulle gi brød til dine utmattede menn?'»

Then Gideon went to the men of Succoth and said, 'Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me, saying, “Are Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hands, that we should give bread to your exhausted men?”'

16 Og han tok de eldste av byen og ørkentornene og brierne, og han straffet mennene i Sukkot med dem.

He then took the elders of the city, along with thorns and briers from the wilderness, and used them to teach the men of Succoth a lesson.

17 Han rev også ned tårnet i Penuel og drepte mennene i byen.

He also tore down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city.

18 Deretter sa han til Seba og Salmunna: «Hva slags menn var det dere drepte på Tabor?» De svarte: «Som du er, var de. Hver og én så ut som en konges sønner.»

Then he asked Zebah and Zalmunna, 'What kind of men did you kill at Tabor?' They answered, 'They were like you—each one resembling the son of a king.'

19 Han sa: «De var mine brødre, sønner av min mor. Så sant Herren lever: Hvis dere hadde latt dem leve, ville jeg ikke ha drept dere.»

Gideon said, 'They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As surely as the Lord lives, if you had spared their lives, I would not kill you.'

20 Så sa han til sin eldste sønn Jeter: «Stå frem og drep dem.» Men den unge mannen dro ikke sitt sverd, for han var redd, siden han fortsatt var en gutt.

He then said to Jether, his firstborn, 'Get up and kill them.' But the young man did not draw his sword because he was afraid, still being just a boy.

21 Da sa Seba og Salmunna: «Stå du frem og slag oss i hel, for som mannen er, så er hans styrke.» Gideon sto frem og drepte Seba og Salmunna, og han tok måneformede smykker som var på deres kamelers hals.

Zebah and Zalmunna said, 'Get up yourself and strike us down, for a man is judged by his strength.' So Gideon got up, killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescent ornaments from the necks of their camels.

22 Da sa Israels menn til Gideon: «Regjer over oss, du og din sønn og din sønnesønn, for du har frelst oss fra Midians hånd.»

The Israelites said to Gideon, 'Rule over us—you, your son, and your grandson—because you have saved us from the hand of Midian.'

23 Men Gideon sa til dem: «Jeg vil ikke regjere over dere, og min sønn skal heller ikke regjere over dere. Herren skal regjere over dere.»

But Gideon replied, 'I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The Lord will rule over you.'

24 Gideon fortsatte: «La meg bare be dere om én ting: Hver av dere gir meg øreringen fra sitt bytte.» For de bar øreringer av gull, siden de var ismaelitter.

Then Gideon said to them, 'I have one request—that each of you give me an earring from your share of the plunder.' (It was the custom of the Ishmaelites to wear gold earrings.)

25 De svarte: «Vi skal gjerne gi dem.» Så bredte de ut et klede, og hver mann kastet øreringen fra sitt bytte på det.

They answered, 'We will gladly give them.' So they spread out a garment, and each man threw a gold earring from his share of the plunder onto it.

26 Vekten av gulleørene han hadde bedt om, var tusen og sju hundre sekel gull, foruten de måneformede smykkene, de hengende kjedene og de purpurfargede klærne som kongene av Midian hadde båret, og foruten halsringene som var på deres kameler.

The weight of the gold earrings that Gideon had requested was seventeen hundred shekels, apart from the crescent ornaments, the pendants, the purple robes worn by the kings of Midian, and the chains on the necks of their camels.

27 Gideon laget en efod av det og satte den i sin by, i Ofra. Hele Israel spilte utroskap med den der, og den ble en felle for Gideon og hans hus.

Gideon made the gold into an ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his hometown. All Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his family.

28 Så ble Midian ydmyket for Israels barn og løftet ikke lenger sitt hode. Landet hadde fred i førti år i Gideons dager.

Thus Midian was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its head again. During the days of Gideon, the land had peace for forty years.

29 Jerubbaal, Joasj sønn, dro hjem og bodde i sitt hus.

Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) son of Joash went back to his home to live.

30 Gideon hadde sytti sønner som stammet fra ham, for han hadde mange koner.

Gideon had seventy sons of his own, for he had many wives.

31 Hans medhustru, som bodde i Sikem, fødte også en sønn, og han kalte ham Abimelek.

His concubine, who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech.

32 Gideon, Joasj sønn, døde i høy alder og ble begravet i sin far Joas grav i Ofra, som tilhørte Abieser-familien.

Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

After Gideon died, the Israelites again prostituted themselves to the Baals, making Baal-Berith their god.

34 Israels barn husket ikke Herren deres Gud, som hadde reddet dem fra hendene til alle deres fiender rundt omkring.

The Israelites did not remember the Lord their God, who had rescued them from the hand of all their enemies on every side.

35 De viste heller ikke vennlighet mot Jerubbaals, Gideons, hus, til gjengjeld for alt det gode han hadde gjort mot Israel.

They also failed to show kindness to the family of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) for all the good that he had done for Israel.
