The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Jakob ble far til Josef, ektemannen til Maria, som fødte Jesus som kalles Kristus.

And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

Således er det alt i alt fjorten slektsledd fra Abraham til David, og fjorten slektsledd fra David og frem til bortførelsen til Babylon, og fjorten slektsledd fra bortførelsen til Babylon og frem til Kristus.

So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the captivity in Babylon to Christ are fourteen generations.

Med Jesu Kristi fødsel gikk det slik til: Da hans mor Maria var trolovet med Josef, viste det seg, før de hadde vært sammen, at hun var blitt med barn ved Den Hellige Ånd.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened in this way: When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit.

Hennes mann Josef var en rettskaffen mann; han ville ikke bringe skam over henne offentlig, men besluttet å skille seg fra henne i stillhet.

Then Joseph her husband, being a just man and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.

But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

And she shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,

Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Da Josef våknet av søvnen, gjorde han som Herrens engel hadde befalt ham, og tok sin kone Maria hjem til seg.

Then Joseph, being raised from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took his wife:

Men han levde ikke med henne før hun hadde født sin førstefødte sønn; og han ga ham navnet Jesus.

And did not know her until she had brought forth her firstborn son; and he called his name JESUS.
