1 David dro derfor bort derfra og flyktet til hulen ved Adullam. Da brødrene hans og hele hans fars hus hørte det, dro de dit til ham.

David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave of Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down thither to him.

2 Og alle som var i nød, alle som var i gjeld, og alle som var misfornøyd, samlet seg hos ham; og han ble deres fører, og det var omtrent fire hundre mann med ham.

And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

3 Og David dro derfra til Mizpeh i Moab og sa til Moabs konge: La min far og min mor få komme og være hos dere til jeg vet hva Gud vil gjøre for meg.

And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, `and be' with you, till I know what God will do for me.

4 Og han førte dem til Moabs konge, og de bodde hos ham så lenge David var i borgen.

And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the stronghold.

5 Men profeten Gad sa til David: Bli ikke i borgen, dra bort og gå til Juda-landet. Da dro David bort og kom til skogen Heret.

And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the stronghold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hereth.

6 Saul fikk vite at David og mennene hans var oppdaget. Da satt Saul i Gibea under tamarisktreet i Rama med spydet i hånden, og alle tjenerne hans sto omkring ham.

And Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him: now Saul was sitting in Gibeah, under the tamarisk-tree in Ramah, with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him.

7 Og Saul sa til tjenerne sine som sto omkring ham: Hør nå, Benjaminitter! Vil Isais sønn gi dere alle marker og vingårder? Vil han gjøre dere alle til høvedsmenn over tusen og over hundre,

And Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, will he make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds,

8 så dere alle har sammensverget dere mot meg? Ingen har avslørt for meg at sønnen min har inngått en pakt med Isais sønn, og ingen av dere er bedrøvet for min skyld eller forteller meg at sønnen min har oppviglet tjeneren min mot meg, for å ligge i bakhold som i dag.

that all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that discloseth to me when my son maketh a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or discloseth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

9 Da svarte Edomitten Doeg, som sto blant Sauls tjenere, og sa: Jeg så Isais sønn komme til Nob, til Ahimelek, sønn av Ahitub.

Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.

10 Og han spurte Herren for ham, og ga ham mat, og ga ham sverdet til filisteren Goliat.

And he inquired of Jehovah for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.

11 Da sendte kongen bud etter Ahimelek, presten, sønn av Ahitub, og hele hans fars hus, prestene i Nob, og de kom alle til kongen.

Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king.

12 Og Saul sa: Hør nå, du sønn av Ahitub! Og han svarte: Her er jeg, herre.

And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.

13 Og Saul sa til ham: Hvorfor har du sammensverget deg mot meg, du og Isais sønn, ved å gi ham brød og et sverd og spørre Gud for ham, så han kunne reise seg mot meg og ligge i bakhold, som i dag?

And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

14 Da svarte Ahimelek kongen og sa: Og hvem blant alle dine tjenere er så trofast som David, som er kongens svigersønn, tatt opp i ditt råd, og er æret i ditt hus?

Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who among all thy servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and is taken into thy council, and is honorable in thy house?

15 Har jeg nettopp i dag begynt å spørre Gud for ham? Det være langt fra meg! La ikke kongen legge noe på din tjener eller på hele min fars hus; for din tjener vet ingenting om alt dette, lite eller mye.

Have I to-day begun to inquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute anything unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for thy servant knoweth nothing of all this, less or more.

16 Kongen sa: Du skal sannelig dø, Ahimelek, du og hele din fars hus.

And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father's house.

17 Kongen sa til vaktene som sto omkring ham: Gå frem og drep Herrens prester, for deres hånd er også med David, og fordi de visste at han flyktet og ikke fortalte meg det. Men kongens tjenere ville ikke legge hånd på Herrens prester for å drepe dem.

And the king said unto the guard that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of Jehovah; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew that he fled, and did not disclose it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of Jehovah.

18 Da sa kongen til Doeg: Gå du frem og drep prestene. Og Edomitten Doeg gikk frem og angrep prestene, og han drepte den dagen åttifem menn som bar linet efod.

And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and he slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod.

19 Og Nob, prestenes by, slo han med sverdet - både menn og kvinner, barn og spedbarn, og okser og esler og sauer, med sverdets egg.

And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen and asses and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

20 Men en av sønnene til Ahimelek, sønn av Ahitub, ved navn Abjatar, slapp unna og flyktet til David.

And one of the sons of Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David.

21 Og Abjatar fortalte David at Saul hadde drept Herrens prester.

And Abiathar told David that Saul had slain Jehovah's priests.

22 Og David sa til Abjatar: Jeg visste den dagen da Edomitten Doeg var der, at han sannelig ville fortelle det til Saul. Jeg har forårsaket tapet av alle personer i din fars hus.

And David said unto Abiathar, I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned `the death' of all the persons of thy father's house.

23 Bli hos meg, frykt ikke; for han som søker mitt liv, søker ditt liv også. Hos meg vil du være i sikkerhet.

Abide thou with me, fear not; for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: for with me thou shalt be in safeguard.
