1 De fortalte David og sa: «Se, filisterne kjemper mot Ke'ila og plyndrer treskeplassene.»

And they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah, and are robbing the threshing-floors.

2 Da spurte David Herren og sa: «Skal jeg dra og slå disse filisterne?» Og Herren sa til David: «Dra og slå filisterne og frels Ke'ila.»

Therefore David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And Jehovah said unto David, Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.

3 Men Davids menn sa til ham: «Se, her i Juda er vi redde; hvor mye mer om vi drar til Ke'ila mot filisternes hærer?»

And David's men said unto him, Behold, we are afraid here in Judah: how much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?

4 Da spurte David Herren igjen. Og Herren svarte ham: «Reis ned til Ke'ila, for jeg vil gi filisterne i din hånd.»

Then David inquired of Jehovah yet again. And Jehovah answered him, and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thy hand.

5 Så dro David og mennene hans til Ke'ila, kjempet mot filisterne, tok med seg buskapen deres og slo dem med et stort nederlag. Så reddet David innbyggerne i Ke'ila.

And David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and slew them with a great slaughter. So David save the inhabitants of Keilah.

6 Og da skjedde det at da Abiatar, Ahimeleks sønn, flyktet til David i Ke'ila, kom han ned med en efod i hånden.

And it came to pass, when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he came down with an ephod in his hand.

7 Det ble fortalt Saul at David var kommet til Ke'ila. Og Saul sa: «Gud har gitt ham i min hånd, for han har stengt seg inne ved å gå inn i en by med porter og bommer.»

And it was told Saul that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, God hath delivered him into my hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that hath gates and bars.

8 Så kalte Saul sammen alt folket til krig for å dra ned til Ke'ila og beleire David og mennene hans.

And Saul summoned all the people to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men.

9 Men David forstod at Saul planla ondt mot ham, og han sa til presten Abiatar: «Bring hit efoden.»

And David knew that Saul was devising mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, Bring hither the ephod.

10 Og David sa: «Herre, Israels Gud, din tjener har sikkert hørt at Saul vil komme til Ke'ila for å ødelegge byen for min skyld.

Then said David, O Jehovah, the God of Israel, thy servant hath surely heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake.

11 Vil mennene i Ke'ila overgi meg i hans hånd? Vil Saul komme ned, som din tjener har hørt? Herre, Israels Gud, vær så snill å si til din tjener.» Og Herren sa: «Han vil komme ned.»

Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? O Jehovah, the God of Israel, I beseech thee, tell thy servant. And Jehovah said, He will come down.

12 Da sa David: «Vil mennene i Ke'ila overgi meg og mennene mine i Sauls hånd?» Og Herren sa: «De vil overgi deg.»

Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver up to me and my men into the hand of Saul? And Jehovah said, They will deliver thee up.

13 Så reiste David og mennene hans, omtrent seks hundre, opp og dro ut av Ke'ila og gikk hvor de kunne. Det ble fortalt Saul at David hadde rømt fra Ke'ila, og han oppgav å dra dit.

Then David and his men, who were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah, and went whithersoever they could go. And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah; and he forbare to go forth.

14 David holdt til i ørkenen i fjellborgene og forble i fjellene i ødemarken i Sif. Saul søkte ham hver dag, men Gud gav ham ikke i hans hånd.

And David abode in the wilderness in the strongholds, and remained in the hill-country in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.

15 David skjønte at Saul hadde kommet ut for å lete etter ham for å ta livet av ham; og David var i Sifs ørken i skogen.

And David saw that Saul was come out to seek his life: and David was in the wilderness of Ziph in the wood.

16 Og Jonatan, Sauls sønn, sto opp og gikk til David i skogen og styrket hans hånd i Gud.

And Jonathan, Saul's son, arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.

17 Og han sa til ham: «Frykt ikke, for min fars hånd, Saul, skal ikke finne deg; du skal bli konge over Israel, og jeg skal være nest etter deg; det vet også min far, Saul.»

And he said unto him, Fear not; for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and that also Saul my father knoweth.

18 De to inngikk en pakt for Herrens åsyn; så ble David værende i skogen, og Jonatan gikk hjem.

And they two made a covenant before Jehovah: and David abode in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house.

19 Da kom folk fra Sif opp til Saul i Gibea og sa: «Er ikke David gjemt hos oss i fjellborgene i skogen, på høyden Hahila, som er sør for ørkenen?

Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself with us in the strongholds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of the desert?

20 Så kom da, konge, etter som ditt hjerte ønsker å komme ned, og vi skal overgi ham i kongens hånd.»

Now therefore, O king, come down, according to all the desire of thy soul to come down; and our part shall be to deliver him up into the king's hand.

21 Og Saul sa: «Velsignet være dere av Herren, for dere har medfølelse med meg.»

And Saul said, Blessed be ye of Jehovah; for ye have had compassion on me.

22 «Gå, jeg ber dere, undersøk enda en gang og finn ut og se hans sted hvor han gjemmer seg, og hvem som har sett ham der; for det er sagt til meg at han er meget listig.»

Go, I pray you, make yet more sure, and know and see his place where his haunt is, `and' who hath seen him there; for it is told me that he dealeth very subtly.

23 «Se derfor, og få kunnskap om alle stedene hvor han skjuler seg, og kom tilbake til meg med sikre opplysninger. Da vil jeg gå med dere, og finner han i landet, skal jeg oppspore ham blant alle Judas tusener.»

See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking-places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me of a certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah.

24 Så sto de opp og dro til Sif foran Saul, men David og mennene hans var i Maons ørken, sør for ørkenen.

And they arose, and went to Ziph before Saul: but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the Arabah on the south of the desert.

25 Og Saul og mennene hans dro for å lete etter ham. Da de fortalte David, kom han ned til klippen og ble i Maons ørken. Da Saul hørte det, forfulgte han David i Maons ørken.

And Saul and his men went to seek him. And they told David: wherefore he came down to the rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard `that', he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.

26 Saul gikk på den ene siden av fjellet, og David og mennene hans på den andre siden av fjellet. David skyndte seg å komme unna for Saul, for Saul og mennene hans omringet David og mennene for å ta dem.

And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain: and David made haste to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them.

27 Men en budbringer kom til Saul og sa: «Skynd deg og kom, for filisternene har gjort et angrep på landet.»

But there came a messenger unto Saul, saying, Haste thee, and come; for the Philistines have made a raid upon the land.

28 Så oppgav Saul å forfølge David og gikk mot filisterne. Derfor kalte de det stedet Sela-Hammalekot.

So Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines: therefore they called that place Sela-hammahlekoth.

29 Og David dro opp derfra og bodde i borgene i En-Gedi.

And David went up from thence, and dwelt in the strongholds of En-gedi.
