Så la Abia seg til hvile med sine fedre, og de gravla ham i Davids by. Asa, hans sønn, ble konge i hans sted. I hans dager var landet i fred i ti år.

So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David; and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.

Asa gjorde det som var godt og rett i Herrens, hans Guds, øyne.

And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of Jehovah his God:

For han fjernet de fremmede altrene og offerhaugene, brøt ned steinstøttene og hogde ned Asjera-stolpene.

for he took away the foreign altars, and the high places, and brake down the pillars, and hewed down the Asherim,

Han befalte Juda å søke Herren, deres fedres Gud, og å holde loven og budene.

and commanded Judah to seek Jehovah, the God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.

Han fjernet også offerhaugene og solbildene fra alle byene i Juda, og riket hadde ro under ham.

Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the sun-images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.

Han bygde befestede byer i Juda; for landet hadde fred, og han hadde ikke krig i de årene fordi Herren hadde gitt ham hvile.

And he built fortified cities in Judah; for the land was quiet, and he had no war in those years, because Jehovah had given him rest.

Han sa til Juda: La oss bygge disse byene og omgi dem med murer, tårn, porter og bommer; landet er fortsatt vårt, fordi vi har søkt Herren vår Gud. Vi har søkt ham, og han har gitt oss hvile på alle kanter. Så bygget de og hadde fremgang.

For he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars; the land is yet before us, because we have sought Jehovah our God; we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered.

Asa hadde en hær som bar skjold og spyd, fra Juda tre hundre tusen; fra Benjamin, som bar skjold og spente buer, to hundre og åtti tusen. Alle disse var tapre krigere.

And Asa had an army that bare bucklers and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valor.

Da kom Zera, etioperen, mot dem med en hær på tusen tusen og tre hundre vogner; og han kom til Maresja.

And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an army of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and he came unto Mareshah.

Da gikk Asa ut mot ham, og de stilte seg opp til kamp i Sfata-dalen ved Maresja.

Then Asa went out to meet him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.

Asa ropte til Herren sin Gud og sa: Herre, det er ingen andre enn deg som kan hjelpe mellom den sterke og den som ikke har styrke. Hjelp oss, Herre vår Gud, for vi stoler på deg, og i ditt navn har vi gått mot denne store hæren. Herre, du er vår Gud; la ikke mennesker få overmakt over deg.

And Asa cried unto Jehovah his God, and said, Jehovah, there is none besides thee to help, between the mighty and him that hath no strength: help us, O Jehovah our God; for we rely on thee, and in thy name are we come against this multitude. O Jehovah, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee.

Så slo Herren etiopierne for Asa og Juda, og etiopierne flyktet.

So Jehovah smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.

Asa og folket som var med ham forfulgte dem til Gerar, og det falt så mange av etiopierne at de ikke kunne komme seg, for de ble knust av Herren og hans hær. De tok svært mye bytte.

And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar: and there fell of the Ethiopians so many that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before Jehovah, and before his host; and they carried away very much booty.

De slo alle byene rundt Gerar; for frykten for Herren kom over dem, og de plyndret alle byene; for det var mye bytte i dem.

And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of Jehovah came upon them: and they despoiled all the cities; for there was much spoil in them.

De slo også teltene til buskapen, tok med seg mange sauer og kameler, og vendte tilbake til Jerusalem.

They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep in abundance, and camels, and returned to Jerusalem.
