1 En kvinne, en av profetenes koner, ropte til Elisja: Din tjener, min mann, er død, og du vet at han fryktet Herren. Nå har en kreditor kommet for å ta mine to barn som treller.

Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear Jehovah: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two children to be bondmen.

2 Elisja sa til henne: Hva kan jeg gjøre for deg? Fortell meg, hva har du i huset? Hun svarte: Din tjenestepike har ingenting annet i huset enn en krukke med olje.

And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me; what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thy handmaid hath not anything in the house, save a pot of oil.

3 Da sa han: Gå ut og lån tomme kar av alle naboene dine, ikke få.

Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbors, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.

4 Gå så inn, lukk døren etter deg og sønnene dine, og hell olje i alle karene, og sett til side de som er fulle.

And thou shalt go in, and shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and pour out into all those vessels; and thou shalt set aside that which is full.

5 Hun gikk fra ham, lukket døren etter seg og sønnene sine; og de bar karene til henne, og hun helte olje.

So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons; they brought `the vessels' to her, and she poured out.

6 Da karene var fulle, sa hun til sønnen: Gi meg enda et kar. Men han svarte: Det finnes ikke flere kar. Da stanset oljen.

And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.

7 Hun kom og fortalte Guds mann hva som hadde skjedd. Han sa: Gå og selg oljen, betal gjelden din, og lev du og dine sønner av resten.

Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy sons of the rest.

8 En dag kom Elisja til Sunem. Der var det en rik kvinne; hun nødet ham til å spise brød. Og hver gang han kom forbi, tok han inn der for å spise.

And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.

9 Hun sa til mannen sin: Jeg vet at dette er en hellig Guds mann som stadig går forbi oss.

And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is a holy man of God, that passeth by us continually.

10 La oss lage et lite rom på taket med seng, bord, stol og lampe til ham, så kan han trekke seg tilbake dit når han kommer til oss.

Let us make, I pray thee, a little chamber on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a seat, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.

11 En dag kom han igjen, og han gikk opp på rommet og la seg der.

And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber and lay there.

12 Han sa til sin tjener Gehasi: Kall på denne sunamittkvinnen. Han kalte på henne, og hun kom og sto foran ham.

And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him.

13 Han sa til gehasi: Si til henne: Du har gjort så meget for oss. Hva kan vi gjøre for deg? Ønsker du å få en anbefaling til kongen eller til hærføreren? Hun svarte: Jeg bor blant mitt folk.

And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people.

14 Så sa han: Hva kan vi da gjøre for henne? Gehasi svarte: Hun har ingen sønn, og mannen hennes er gammel.

And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no son, and her husband is old.

15 Deretter sa han: Kall på henne. Gehasi kalte på henne, og hun kom og sto i døren.

And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door.

16 Elisja sa: Neste år på denne tiden skal du ha en sønn i armene dine. Hun svarte: Nei, min herre, du Guds mann, ikke gi meg falske forhåpninger!

And he said, At this season, when the time cometh round, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thy handmaid.

17 Men hun ble gravid og fødte en sønn på samme tid året etter, slik Elisja hadde sagt til henne.

And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season, when the time came round, as Elisha had said unto her.

18 Da gutten ble større, gikk han en dag ut til faren sin som var hos innhøstingen.

And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers.

19 Gutten ropte til faren sin: Mitt hode, mitt hode! Faren sa til tjeneren: Bær ham til moren hans.

And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to his servant, Carry him to his mother.

20 Tjeneren tok ham og bar ham til moren. Gutten satt på fanget hennes til middagstid, og da døde han.

And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died.

21 Hun gikk opp og la ham på Guds manns seng, lukket døren og gikk ut.

And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut `the door' upon him, and went out.

22 Hun ropte til mannen sin og sa: Send meg en av tjenerne og en esel, så jeg kan dra til Guds mann og komme tilbake.

And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the servants, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.

23 Han spurte henne: Hvorfor vil du dra til ham i dag? Det er verken nymånefest eller sabbat. Hun svarte: Det går bra.

And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to-day? it is neither new moon nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well.

24 Så salet hun eselet og sa til tjeneren: Lei mer om det krevdes. Ikke stopp før jeg sier fra.

Then she saddled an ass, and said to her servant, Drive, and go forward; slacken me not the riding, except I bid thee.

25 Hun dro og kom til Guds mann på Karmelfjellet. Da Guds mann så henne på avstand, sa han til Gehasi: Se, der kommer sunamittkvinnen.

So she went, and came unto the man of God to mount Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, yonder is the Shunammite:

26 Løp henne i møte og spør henne, står alt vel til med deg, mannen din og barnet? Hun svarte: Det står vel til.

run, I pray thee, now to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well.

27 Men da hun kom opp til Guds mann på fjellet, grep hun føttene hans. Gehasi kom frem for å støte henne bort, men Guds mann sa: La henne være, for hun er i stor nød. Herren har skjult det for meg og ikke fortalt meg det.

And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught hold of his feet. And Gehazi came near to thrust her away; but the man of God said, Let her alone: for her soul is vexed within her; and Jehovah hath hid it from me, and hath not told me.

28 Hun sa: Har jeg bedt min herre om å få en sønn? Sa jeg ikke: Ikke gi meg falske forhåpninger?

Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me?

29 Da sa han til Gehasi: Bind opp kjortelen, ta staven min i hånden og gå. Hvis du møter noen, så hils ikke på ham, og hvis noen hilser på deg, så svar ikke. Legg staven på guttens ansikt.

Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thy hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child.

30 Men guttens mor sa: Så sant Herren lever og så sant du selv lever, jeg forlater deg ikke. Så reiste han seg og fulgte henne.

And the mother of the child said, As Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her.

31 Gehasi gikk i forveien, men da han la staven på guttens ansikt, var det verken lyd eller tegn til liv. Så vendte han tilbake til Elisja og sa: Gutten er ikke våknet.

And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he returned to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked.

32 Da Elisja kom inn i huset, så han gutten ligge død på sengen hans.

And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed.

33 Han gikk inn, lukket døren bak seg og gutten, og ba til Herren.

He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto Jehovah.

34 Han la seg over gutten, munnen mot munnen, øynene mot øynene, hendene mot hendene. Så bøyde han seg over gutten, og guttens kropp ble varm.

And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon him; and the flesh of the child waxed warm.

35 Elisja sto opp og gikk en gang frem og tilbake i huset, så gikk han opp igjen og bøyde seg over gutten. Da nøs gutten syv ganger, og han åpnet øynene.

Then he returned, and walked in the house once to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.

36 Elisja kalte på Gehasi og sa: Kall inn sunamittkvinnen. Han kalte på henne, og da hun kom inn til Elisja, sa han: Ta sønnen din.

And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son.

37 Hun kom, falt ned for føttene hans, bøyde seg til jorden, tok sønnen sin og gikk ut.

Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground; and she took up her son, and went out.

38 Elisja vendte tilbake til Gilgal mens det var hungersnød i landet. Profetenes sønner satt foran ham, og han sa til tjeneren sin: Sett på den store gryten og kok en suppe for profetenes sønner.

And Elisha came again to Gilgal. And there was a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him; and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and boil pottage for the sons of the prophets.

39 En av dem gikk ut på marken for å plukke urter. Han fant en vill klatreplante, plukket en full fang av ville gresskar, og skar dem opp i gryten uten å vite hva det var.

And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage; for they knew them not.

40 De serverte det til mennene, men da de begynte å spise av suppen, ropte de: Guds mann, det er død i gryten! Og de kunne ikke spise det.

So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof.

41 Men Elisja sa: Ta mel. Han kastet melet i gryten og sa: Ta det ut for folket så de kan spise. Og det var ingen skade i gryten.

But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot.

42 En mann fra Baal-Salisa kom med brød av førstegrøden til Guds mann, tjue byggbrød og friskt korn, og han sa: Gi det til folket så de kan spise.

And there came a man from Baal-shalishah, and brought the man of God bread of the first-fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and fresh ears of grain in his sack. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat.

43 Elisjas tjener sa: Hvordan skal jeg legge dette frem for hundre menn? Men han svarte: Gi det til folket så de kan spise, for så sier Herren: De skal spise og ha til overs.

And his servant said, What, should I set this before a hundred men? But he said, Give the people, that they may eat; for thus saith Jehovah, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.

44 Så satte han det frem for dem, og de spiste og hadde til overs, som Herrens ord hadde sagt.

So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of Jehovah.
