Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honorable, because by him Jehovah had given victory unto Syria: he was also a mighty man of valor, `but he was' a leper.

2 Syrerne hadde dratt ut i små grupper og tatt til fange en liten jentunge fra Israel, og hun tjente hos Naaman sin kone.

And the Syrians had gone out in bands, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maiden; and she waited on Naaman's wife.

3 Hun sa til sin frue: «Om bare min herre hadde vært hos profeten i Samaria! Da ville han helbrede ham fra hans spedalskhet.»

And she said unto her mistress, Would that my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! then would he recover him of his leprosy.

4 Naaman gikk inn til sin herre og fortalte hva den israelske jenta hadde sagt.

And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the maiden that is of the land of Israel.

5 Kongen av Syria sa: «Dra dit nå, så sender jeg et brev til kongen av Israel.» Han dro av sted og tok med seg ti talenter sølv, seks tusen gullstykker og ti sett med klær.

And the king of Syria said, Go now, and I will send a letter unto the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand `pieces' of gold, and ten changes of raiment.

6 Han brakte brevet til kongen av Israel, hvor det sto: «Når du mottar dette brevet, vet at jeg har sendt min tjener Naaman til deg, for at du skal helbrede ham fra hans spedalskhet.»

And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, saying, And now when this letter is come unto thee, behold, I have sent Naaman my servant to thee, that thou mayest recover him of his leprosy.

7 Da kongen av Israel hadde lest brevet, rev han i stykker klærne sine og sa: «Er jeg Gud, som kan gi liv eller ta liv, at denne mannen sender bud til meg for å helbrede en mann fra hans spedalskhet? Se hvordan han søker en anledning til strid mot meg.»

And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man doth send unto me to recover a man of his leprosy? but consider, I pray you, and see how he seeketh a quarrel against me.

8 Da Elisja, Guds mann, hørte at kongen av Israel hadde revet klærne sine, sendte han bud til kongen og sa: «Hvorfor har du revet klærne dine? La Naaman komme til meg, så skal han vite at det finnes en profet i Israel.»

And it was so, when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.

9 Så kom Naaman med hester og vogner og stanset ved døren til Elisjas hus.

So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariots, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha.

10 Elisja sendte en budbærer til ham med beskjed om å gå og vaske seg sju ganger i Jordan, så ville hans kropp bli frisk igjen og han ville bli ren.

And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.

11 Men Naaman ble sint og dro sin vei, og sa: «Jeg trodde at han ville komme ut til meg, stå der, kalle på Herrens navn, føre hånden over det syke stedet og helbrede spedalskheten.»

But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of Jehovah his God, and wave his hand over the place, and recover the leper.

12 Er ikke Abana og Parpar, elvene i Damaskus, bedre enn alle vannene i Israel? Kan jeg ikke vaske meg i dem og bli ren? Så snudde han seg og dro bort i sinne.

Are not Abanah and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.

13 Men hans tjenere nærmet seg ham og sa: «Min far, hvis profeten hadde bedt deg gjøre noe stort, ville du ikke ha gjort det? Hvor mye mer da når han bare sier: 'Vask deg, så blir du ren.'»

And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?

14 Da dro han ned og dyppet seg sju ganger i Jordan, slik Guds mann hadde sagt; og hans kropp ble som en liten gutt sitt, og han ble ren.

Then went he down, and dipped `himself' seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.

15 Han vendte tilbake til Guds mann, han og hans følge, stod foran ham og sa: «Nå vet jeg at det ikke finnes noen Gud i hele verden uten i Israel. Ta derfor imot en gave fra din tjener.»

And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him; and he said, Behold now, I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a present of thy servant.

16 Men han sa: «Så sant Herren lever, for hvem jeg står, jeg vil ikke ta imot noe.» Og selv om Naaman prøvde å presse på ham, nektet han.

But he said, As Jehovah liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; but he refused.

17 Da sa Naaman: «Hvis ikke, ber jeg deg om å la din tjener få så mye jord som to muldyr kan bære, for fra nå av vil jeg ikke ofre brennoffer eller slaktoffer til noen annen gud enn Herren.»

And Naaman said, If not, yet, I pray thee, let there be given to thy servant two mules' burden of earth; for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt-offering nor sacrifice unto other gods, but unto Jehovah.

18 Men i én ting vil Herren måtte tilgi din tjener: Når min herre går inn for å tilbe i Rimmons hus, støttet på min arm, og jeg også må bøye meg der, må Herren tilgi din tjener denne ene gangen i Rimmons hus.

In this thing Jehovah pardon thy servant: when my master goeth into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, when I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, Jehovah pardon thy servant in this thing.

19 Elisja sa til ham: «Gå i fred.» Så dro han en liten strekning fra ham.

And he said unto him, Go in peace. So he departed from him a little way.

20 Gehasi, Elisjas tjener, sa: «Se, min herre har spart denne Naaman fra Syria, og ikke tatt imot noe av det han har brakt; så sant Herren lever, jeg vil løpe etter ham og ta noe fra ham.»

But Gehazi the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath spared this Naaman the Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: as Jehovah liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him.

21 Så fulgte Gehasi etter Naaman. Da Naaman så noen komme etter ham, steg han ned fra vognen for å møte ham og sa: «Er det godt med alt?»

So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw one running after him, he alighted from the chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well?

22 Han svarte: «Ja, alt er godt. Min herre har sendt meg og sier: 'Se, nå har det kommet to unge menn fra profetenes sønner i Efraim-fjellene; vær så snill og gi dem en talent sølv og to sett med klær.'»

And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there are come to me from the hill-country of Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets; give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of raiment.

23 Naaman sa: «Vær så snill å ta to talenter.» Han insisterte, pakket to talenter sølv i to sekker med to sett klær og la det på to av sine tjenere; og de bar det foran Gehasi.

And Naaman said, Be pleased to take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of raiment, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bare them before him.

24 Da han kom til høyden, tok han det fra dem, la det i huset, og lot mennene gå, og de dro.

And when he came to the hill, he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house; and he let the men go, and they departed.

25 Så gikk han inn og stod foran sin herre. Elisja sa til ham: «Hvor har du vært, Gehasi?» Han svarte: «Din tjener har ikke vært noe sted.»

But he went in, and stood before his master. And Elisha said unto him, Whence comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went no whither.

26 Elisja svarte: «Var ikke min ånd med deg da mannen snudde fra vognen for å møte deg? Er det tiden for å ta imot penger, klær, oljelunder, vinmarker, sauer og storfe, tjenere og tjenestepiker?

And he said unto him, Went not my heart `with thee', when the man turned from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards and vineyards, and sheep and oxen, and men-servants and maid-servants?

27 Nå skal Naamans spedalskhet klebe seg til deg og til din ætt for alltid.» Så gikk Gehasi ut fra Elisjas nærvær, spedalsk og hvit som snø.

The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper `as white' as snow.
