1 Han kom også til Derbe og til Lystra. Og se, der var det en disippel ved navn Timoteus, sønn av en troende jødisk kvinne, men faren hans var greker.

And he came also to Derbe and to Lystra: and behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewess that believed; but his father was a Greek.

2 Han hadde godt vitnesbyrd fra brødrene i Lystra og Ikonium.

The same was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.

3 Paulus ønsket at han skulle bli med ham, så han omskar ham på grunn av jødene som bodde i området, for alle visste at hans far var greker.

Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and he took and circumcised him because of the Jews that were in those parts: for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

4 Da de reiste gjennom byene, overleverte de bestemmelsene som apostlene og de eldste i Jerusalem hadde vedtatt, så de skulle holde dem.

And as they went on their way through the cities, they delivered them the decrees to keep which had been ordained of the apostles and elders that were at Jerusalem.

5 Menighetene ble styrket i troen og vokste i antall hver dag.

So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.

6 De dro gjennom området Frygia og Galatia, etter at Den hellige ånd hadde hindret dem i å forkynne ordet i Asia.

And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden of the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia;

7 Da de kom til Mysia, forsøkte de å dra til Bithynia, men Jesu Ånd tillot dem ikke det.

and when they were come over against Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia; and the Spirit of Jesus suffered them not;

8 De gikk derfor forbi Mysia og kom ned til Troas.

and passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.

9 I en syn om natten så Paulus en mann fra Makedonia som sto og ba ham og sa: Kom over til Makedonia og hjelp oss.

And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: There was a man of Macedonia standing, beseeching him, and saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

10 Da han hadde sett synet, forsøkte vi straks å dra til Makedonia, da vi konkluderte med at Gud hadde kalt oss for å forkynne evangeliet for dem.

And when he had seen the vision, straightway we sought to go forth into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

11 Vi satte derfor seil fra Troas og gikk rett over til Samothrake, og dagen etter til Neapolis.

Setting sail therefore from Troas, we made a straight course to Samothrace, and the day following to Neapolis;

12 Derfra dro vi til Filippi, en by i Makedonia, en romersk koloni, og vi var i denne byen noen dager.

and from thence to Philippi, which is a city of Macedonia, the first of the district, a `Roman' colony: and we were in this city tarrying certain days.

13 På sabbatsdagen gikk vi utenfor porten til en elv, hvor vi antok det var et bønnested, og vi satte oss ned og snakket til kvinnene som var samlet der.

And on the sabbath day we went forth without the gate by a river side, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down, and spake unto the women that were come together.

14 En kvinne ved navn Lydia, en purpurhandler fra byen Tyatira som tilba Gud, hørte oss. Herren åpnet hjertet hennes, så hun tok til seg det som ble talt av Paulus.

And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple of the city of Thyatira, one that worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened to give heed unto the things which were spoken by Paul.

15 Da hun ble døpt, sammen med sitt hus, inviterte hun oss og sa: Dersom dere mener jeg er trofast mot Herren, kom inn i mitt hus og bli der. Og hun overtalte oss.

And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide `there'. And she constrained us.

16 Da vi var på vei til bønnestedet, møtte vi en tjenestejente som hadde en spådomsånd og skaffet sine herrer stor fortjeneste ved spådomskunster.

And it came to pass, as we were going to the place of prayer, that a certain maid having a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much gain by soothsaying.

17 Hun fulgte etter Paulus og oss og ropte: Disse menn er Den høyeste Guds tjenere, som forkynner dere frelsens vei.

The same following after Paul and us cried out, saying, These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim unto you the way of salvation.

18 Dette gjorde hun mange dager, men Paulus ble irritert, vendte seg til ånden og sa: Jeg befaler deg i Jesu Kristi navn å gå ut av henne. Og den gikk ut i samme stund.

And this she did for many days. But Paul, being sore troubled, turned and said to the spirit, I charge thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And it came out that very hour.

19 Da hennes herrer så at håpet om fortjeneste var borte, grep de Paulus og Silas og slepte dem til torget for å møte myndighetene.

But when her masters saw that the hope of their gain was gone, they laid hold on Paul and Silas, and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers,

20 De førte dem til magistratene og sa: Disse menn, som er jøder, forstyrrer vår by tungt,

and when they had brought them unto the magistrates, they said, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

21 ved å innføre skikker som det ikke er tillatt for oss som romere å motta eller praktisere.

and set forth customs which it is not lawful for us to receive, or to observe, being Romans.

22 Folkemengden reiste seg samlet mot dem, og magistratene rev klærne av dem og befalte at de skulle piskes.

And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent their garments off them, and commanded to beat them with rods.

23 Da de hadde fått mange slag, kastet de dem i fengsel og beordret fangevokteren å holde dem trygt.

And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:

24 Han, som hadde mottatt slik ordre, kastet dem i det innerste fengselet og låste føttene deres i stokken.

who, having received such a charge, cast them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

25 Omkring midnatt ba Paulus og Silas og sang lovsanger til Gud, mens fangene hørte på dem.

But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns unto God, and the prisoners were listening to them;

26 Plutselig kom det et kraftig jordskjelv så fengselsbygningen ristet, og straks ble alle dørene åpnet og alles lenker falt av.

and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison-house were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.

27 Fangevokteren våknet av søvnen, og da han så fengselsdørene åpne, dro han sitt sverd og ville ta sitt eget liv, da han trodde fangene hadde rømt.

And the jailor, being roused out of sleep and seeing the prison doors open, drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.

28 Men Paulus ropte med høy røst: Gjør deg selv ingen skade, for vi er alle her!

But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.

29 Han ba om lys, sprang inn og falt skjelvende ned foran Paulus og Silas.

And he called for lights and sprang in, and, trembling for fear, fell down before Paul and Silas,

30 Han førte dem ut og sa: Herrer, hva må jeg gjøre for å bli frelst?

and brought them out and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

31 De svarte: Tro på Herren Jesus, så skal du bli frelst, du og ditt hus.

And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved, thou and thy house.

32 De forkynte Herrens ord for ham og for alle i hans hus.

And they spake the word of the Lord unto him, with all that were in his house.

33 Samme time om natten tok han dem og vasket sårene deres, og straks ble han døpt, både han og alle hans.

And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, immediately.

34 Han førte dem til sitt hus, stilte mat fram for dem og jublet sammen med hele sitt hus fordi han hadde kommet til tro på Gud.

And he brought them up into his house, and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly, with all his house, having believed in God.

35 Da det ble dag, sendte magistratene vaktmenn og sa: La de menn gå fri.

But when it was day, the magistrates sent the sergeants, saying, Let those men go.

36 Fangevokteren sa til Paulus: Magistratene har sendt beskjed om at dere kan gå fri. Gå derfor ut og dra i fred.

And the jailor reported the words to Paul, `saying', The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore come forth, and go in peace.

37 Men Paulus sa til dem: De har offentlig pisket oss, ufordømte, menn som er romerske borgere, og kastet oss i fengsel. Og nå vil de sende oss bort i hemmelighet? Nei, la dem komme selv og ta oss ut.

But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men that are Romans, and have cast us into prison; and do they now cast us out privily? Nay verily; but let them come themselves and bring us out.

38 Vaktmennene rapporterte dette til magistratene, og de ble redde da de hørte at de var romere.

And the sergeants reported these words unto the magistrates: and they feared when they heard that they were Romans;

39 De kom og ba dem om unnskyldning, førte dem ut og ba dem dra bort fra byen.

and they came and besought them; and when they had brought them out, they asked them to go away from the city.

40 De gikk ut av fengselet og gikk inn til Lydia, og da de hadde sett brødrene, oppmuntret de dem og dro videre.

And they went out of the prison, and entered into `the house' of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.
