1 Så tok de ut på reisen fra Elim, og hele menigheten av Israels barn kom til ørkenen Sin, som ligger mellom Elim og Sinai, på den femtende dagen i den andre måneden etter at de dro ut av Egypt.

And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt.

2 Og hele menigheten av Israels barn murret mot Moses og mot Aron i ørkenen.

And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron in the wilderness:

3 Israels barn sa til dem: «Om vi bare hadde dødd for Herrens hånd i landet Egypt, da vi satt ved kjøttgrytene og spiste oss mette på brød! For dere har ført oss ut i denne ørkenen for å drepe hele menigheten med sult.»

and the children of Israel said unto them, Would that we had died by the hand of Jehovah in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh-pots, when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

4 Da sa Herren til Moses: «Se, jeg skal la brød regne fra himmelen for dere. Folket skal gå ut og samle dagens porsjon hver dag, for at jeg skal prøve dem, om de vil følge min lov eller ikke.»

Then said Jehovah unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or not.

5 Og på den sjette dagen skal det skje at de skal forberede det de tar inn, og det skal være dobbelt så mye som de samler hver dag.

And it shall come to pass on the sixth day, that they shall prepare that which they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.

6 Da sa Moses og Aron til alle Israels barn: «I kveld skal dere vite at det er Herren som har ført dere ut av landet Egypt.

And Moses and Aaron said unto all the children of Israel, At even, then ye shall know that Jehovah hath brought you out from the land of Egypt;

7 Og i morgen tidlig skal dere se Herrens herlighet, for han har hørt dere murringen mot Herren. Og hva er vi, at dere murrer mot oss?»

and in the morning, then ye shall see the glory of Jehovah; for that he heareth your murmurings against Jehovah: and what are we, that ye murmur against us?

8 Moses sa også: «Dette skal skje når Herren gir dere kjøtt å spise om kvelden og brød til å bli mett på om morgenen, for Herren har hørt deres murmureringer mot ham. For hva er vi? Det er ikke mot oss dere murrer, men mot Herren.»

And Moses said, `This shall be', when Jehovah shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for that Jehovah heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against him: and what are we? your murmurings are not against us, but against Jehovah.

9 Og Moses sa til Aron: «Si til hele menigheten av Israels barn: Kom fram for Herren, for han har hørt deres murmureringer.»

And Moses said unto Aaron, Say unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, Come near before Jehovah; for he hath heard your murmurings.

10 Og da Aron talte til hele menigheten av Israels barn, vendte de seg mot ørkenen, og se, Herrens herlighet viste seg i skyen.

And it came to pass, as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of Jehovah appeared in the cloud.

11 Og Herren talte til Moses og sa:

And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

12 «Jeg har hørt Israels barns murmureringer. Tal til dem og si: Om kvelden skal dere spise kjøtt, og om morgenen skal dere bli mette på brød. Da skal dere vite at jeg er Herren deres Gud.»

I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread: and ye shall know that I am Jehovah your God.

13 Og det skjedde om kvelden at vaktlene kom opp og dekket leiren, og om morgenen lå duggen rundt leiren.

And it came to pass at even, that the quails came up, and covered the camp: and in the morning the dew lay round about the camp.

14 Da duggen gikk opp, se, lå det over ørkenens overflate en liten rund ting, liten som rim på jorden.

And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness a small round thing, small as the hoar-frost on the ground.

15 Da Israels barn så det, sa de til hverandre: «Hva er dette?» For de visste ikke hva det var. Moses sa til dem: «Dette er brødet som Herren har gitt dere å spise.»

And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, What is it? For they knew not what it was. And Moses said unto them, It is the bread which Jehovah hath given you to eat.

16 Dette er det Herren har befalt: «Samle så mye dere trenger, hver etter sitt spiseforhold, en omer per hode, etter antall personer i teltene deres, skal dere ta det.»

This is the thing which Jehovah hath commanded, Gather ye of it every man according to his eating; an omer a head, according to the number of your persons, shall ye take it, every man for them that are in his tent.

17 Israels barn gjorde slik, og samlet, noen mer, noen mindre.

And the children of Israel did so, and gathered some more, some less.

18 Da de målte det med en omer, hadde den som hadde samlet mye intet til overs, og den som hadde samlet lite, manglet ingenting. Hver samlet etter sitt spiseforhold.

And when they measured it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.

19 Og Moses sa til dem: «Ingen må la noe bli igjen til morgenen.»

And Moses said unto them, Let no man leave of it till the morning.

20 Likevel hørte de ikke på Moses, men noen lot det bli igjen til morgenen, og det ynglet ormer i det og luktet vondt. Moses ble sint på dem.

Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and became foul: and Moses was wroth with them.

21 Så samlet de det hver morgen, hver etter sitt spiseforhold. Når solen ble varm, smeltet det bort.

And they gathered it morning by morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted.

22 På den sjette dagen skjedde det at de samlet dobbelt så mye brød, to omer for hver person. Og alle lederne i menigheten kom og fortalte Moses.

And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.

23 Han sa til dem: «Dette er hva Herren har talt: I morgen er det sabbat, en hellig hviledag for Herren. Bak det dere vil bake, og kok det dere vil koke. Alt som blir til overs, skal dere legge til side til morgenen.»

And he said unto them, This is that which Jehovah hath spoken, Tomorrow is a solemn rest, a holy sabbath unto Jehovah: bake that which ye will bake, and boil that which ye will boil; and all that remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.

24 De la det til side til morgenen, som Moses hadde befalt, og det luktet ikke vondt og var ikke ormer i det.

And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not become foul, neither was there any worm therein.

25 Moses sa: «Spis det i dag, for i dag er det sabbat for Herren. I dag vil dere ikke finne det på marken.»

And Moses said, Eat that to-day; for to-day is a sabbath unto Jehovah: to-day ye shall not find it in the field.

26 Seks dager skal dere samle det, men på den syvende dagen, sabbaten, skal det ikke være noe.

Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.

27 Og det skjedde på den syvende dagen at noen av folket gikk ut for å samle, men de fant ingenting.

And it came to pass on the seventh day, that there went out some of the people to gather, and they found none.

28 Da sa Herren til Moses: «Hvor lenge vil dere nekte å holde mine bud og mine lover?»

And Jehovah said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?

29 Se, Herren har gitt dere sabbaten, derfor gir han dere på den sjette dagen brød for to dager. Bli værende hver på sin plass, ingen må gå ut av sitt sted på den syvende dagen.»

See, for that Jehovah hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

30 Så hvilte folket på den syvende dagen.

So the people rested on the seventh day.

31 Israels hus kalte det manna. Det var som korianderfrø, hvitt, og smaken var som honningkake.

And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna: and it was like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like wafers `made' with honey.

32 Moses sa: «Dette er hva Herren har befalt: La en omers mengde bli bevart for deres etterkommere, så de kan se brødet jeg ga dere å spise i ørkenen, da jeg førte dere ut av Egypt.»

And Moses said, This is the thing which Jehovah hath commanded, Let an omerful of it be kept throughout your generations, that they may see the bread wherewith I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt.

33 Moses sa til Aron: «Ta en krukke, legg en omers mengde manna i den, og sett den foran Herren for å bli bevart for deres etterkommere.»

And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a pot, and put an omerful of manna therein, and lay it up before Jehovah, to be kept throughout your generations.

34 Som Herren hadde befalt Moses, la Aron det foran vitnesbyrdet for å bli bevart.

As Jehovah commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept.

35 Israels barn spiste manna i førti år, til de kom til et bebodd land, de spiste manna til de kom til kanten av Kanaans land.

And the children of Israel did eat the manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat the manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan.

36 En omer er den tiende delen av en efa.

Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah.
