1 Da motstanderne av Juda og Benjamin hørte at de hjemvendte fra fangenskapet holdt på med å bygge et tempel for Herren, Israels Gud,

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building a temple unto Jehovah, the God of Israel;

2 gikk de til Serubabel og lederne for familiene og sa til dem: La oss bygge sammen med dere, for vi søker deres Gud, slik dere gjør; vi har ofret til ham siden Assyrias konge Asarhaddon førte oss hit.

then they drew near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of fathers' `houses', and said unto them, Let us build with you; for we seek your God, as ye do; and we sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assyria, who brought us up hither.

3 Men Serubabel, Jesjua og de andre lederne for Israels familier svarte dem: Dere har ingenting å gjøre med oss i arbeidet med å bygge et hus for vår Gud. Vi skal selv bygge for Herren, Israels Gud, slik kong Kyros, Persias konge, har befalt oss.

But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers' `houses' of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us in building a house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto Jehovah, the God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.

4 Da svekket folket i landet motet til folket i Juda og plaget dem under byggingen,

Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

5 og de leide rådgivere mot dem for å hindre dem i deres planer, alle dagene til kong Kyros av Persia, helt til kong Dareios av Persia.

and hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6 I regjeringstiden til Ahasverus, i begynnelsen av hans regjeringstid, skrev de en anklage mot innbyggerne i Juda og Jerusalem.

And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 Og i Artaxerxes' dager skrev Bisjlam, Mitredat, Tabeel og resten av hans kumpaner til kong Artaxerxes av Persia; og brevet var skrevet i arameisk skrift og formulert på arameisk.

And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian `character', and set forth in the Syrian `tongue'.

8 Rehum kansleren og Sjimsjai skriveren skrev et brev mot Jerusalem til kong Artaxerxes på denne måten:

Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:

9 da skrev Rehum kansleren, Sjimsjai skriveren, og resten av deres følgesvenner, Dinaittene, Arafasjatkittene, Tarpelittene, Aparsittene, Arkevittene, Babelittene, Susanittene, Dehaene, Elamittene,

then `wrote' Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites,

10 og resten av folkeslagene som den store og edle Osnappar hadde flyttet og bosatt i Samaria og i resten av området bortenfor elven, og utover.

and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnappar brought over, and set in the city of Samaria, and in the rest `of the country' beyond the River, and so forth.

11 Dette er kopi av brevet de sendte til kong Artaxerxes: Dine tjenere, mennene bortenfor elven, og så videre.

This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto Artaxerxes the king: Thy servants the men beyond the River, and so forth.

12 La det bli kjent for kongen at jødene som kom opp fra deg, har kommet til oss til Jerusalem; de bygger den gjenstridige og onde byen, ferdigstiller muren og reparerer grunnvollene.

Be it known unto the king, that the Jews that came up from thee are come to us unto Jerusalem; they are building the rebellious and the bad city, and have finished the walls, and repaired the foundations.

13 La nå kongen vite at dersom denne byen blir bygget og murene ferdigstilt, vil de ikke betale skatt, avgift eller toll, og til slutt vil dette skade kongene.

Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful unto the kings.

14 Nå, fordi vi nyter godt av palassets goder, og det ikke er passende for oss å se kongens vanære, har vi derfor sendt beskjed til kongen;

Now because we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not meet for us to see the king's dishonor, therefore have we sent and certified the king;

15 slik at det kan bli søkt i fedrenes annaler: Da vil du finne i annalene og vite at denne byen er en opprørsk by, skadelig for konger og provinser, og at opprør har funnet sted der tidligere; av denne grunn ble byen lagt øde.

that search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time; for which cause was this city laid waste.

16 Vi gir kongen beskjed om at dersom denne byen blir bygget og murene ferdigstilt, vil du ikke ha noen del bortenfor elven.

We certify the king that, if this city be builded, and the walls finished, by this means thou shalt have no portion beyond the River.

17 Kongen sendte da et svar til Rehum kansleren, Sjimsjai skriveren, og resten av deres følgesvenner som bor i Samaria og i resten av området bortenfor elven: Fred, og så videre.

`Then' sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and in the rest `of the country' beyond the River: Peace, and so forth.

18 Brevet som dere sendte til oss, er blitt tydelig lest for meg.

The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.

19 Og jeg har truffet en beslutning, og det er funnet ut at denne byen fra gammelt av har reist seg mot konger, og at opprør og sedisjon har vært utøvd der.

And I decreed, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.

20 Det har også vært mektige konger i Jerusalem, som har hersket over hele området bortenfor elven; og de fikk skatt, avgifter og toll.

There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all `the country' beyond the River; and tribute, custom, and toll, was paid unto them.

21 Gi nå en befaling om at disse mennene skal stoppe, og at denne byen ikke skal bygges før det er gitt en dekret fra meg.

Make ye now a decree to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until a decree shall be made by me.

22 Vær oppmerksomme på å ikke overse dette; hvorfor skulle skade vokse til skade for kongene?

And take heed that ye be not slack herein: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

23 Da kopien av kong Artaxerxes' brev ble lest for Rehum, Sjimsjai skriveren og deres følgesvenner, dro de raskt til Jerusalem til jødene, og med makt og styrke fikk de dem til å stoppe.

Then when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

24 Da stoppet arbeidet på Guds hus i Jerusalem, og det varte til det andre året av regjeringstiden til Dareios, Persias konge.

Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
