1 Da profeterte profetene Haggai og Sakarja, Iddos sønn, til jødene som var i Juda og Jerusalem, i navnet til Israels Gud.

Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem; in the name of the God of Israel `prophesied they' unto them.

2 Da sto Serubabel, sønn av Sjealtiel, og Jesjua, sønn av Josedak, frem og begynte å bygge Guds hus i Jerusalem, og med dem var Guds profeter som hjalp dem.

Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them.

3 På samme tid kom Tattenai, guvernør på den andre siden av elven, og Sjezar-Boznai og deres følgesvenner til dem og sa: Hvem har gitt dere tillatelse til å bygge dette huset og fullføre denne muren?

At the same time came to them Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?

4 Da fortalte vi dem hva navnene var på mennene som bygde denne bygningen.

Then we told them after this manner, what the names of the men were that were making this building.

5 Men deres Guds øye var over de eldste blant jødene, og de fikk dem ikke til å stanse før saken kunne bringes fram for Darius, og et svar kunne sendes tilbake gjennom brev.

But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, and they did not make them cease, till the matter should come to Darius, and then answer should be returned by letter concerning it.

6 Kopien av brevet som Tattenai, guvernøren på den andre siden av elven, Sjezar-Boznai og hans følgesvenner, afarsakitaene, som var på den andre siden av elven, sendte til kong Darius.

The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites, who were beyond the River, sent unto Darius the king;

7 De sendte ham et brev hvor det sto: Til kong Darius, all fred.

they sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus: Unto Darius the king, all peace.

8 Kongen skal vite at vi dro til provinsen Juda, til huset til den store Gud, som bygges med store steiner, og det legges tømmer i veggene; og dette arbeidet pågår flittig og lykkes i deres hender.

Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls; and this work goeth on with diligence and prospereth in their hands.

9 Så spurte vi de eldste og sa: Hvem har gitt dere tillatelse til å bygge dette huset og fullføre denne muren?

Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?

10 Vi spurte dem også om navnene deres, for å kunne informere deg, så vi kunne skrive navnene på mennene som leder dem.

We asked them their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were at the head of them.

11 Og de svarte oss slik: Vi er tjenere for himmelens og jordens Gud, og bygger huset som ble bygget for mange år siden, som en stor konge av Israel bygget og fullførte.

And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and are building the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and finished.

12 Men etter at våre fedre hadde krenket himmelens Gud, ga han dem i hendene på Nebukadnesar, kongen av Babylon, kaldeeren, som ødela dette huset og førte folket bort til Babylon.

But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.

13 Men i det første året til Kyros, kongen av Babylon, ga Kyros, kongen, en befaling om å bygge dette Guds hus.

But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God.

14 Og de gylne og sølvne redskapene til Guds hus, som Nebukadnesar tok ut av tempelet i Jerusalem og brakte til tempelet i Babylon, dem tok Kyros, kongen, ut av tempelet i Babylon og overleverte dem til en mann ved navn Sjesjbassar, som han hadde gjort til guvernør.

And the gold and silver vessels also of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;

15 Og han sa til ham: Ta med deg disse redskapene, gå og legg dem i tempelet som er i Jerusalem, og la Guds hus bli bygget opp på sin plass.

and he said unto him, Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in its place.

16 Så kom den samme Sjesjbassar og la grunnvollene til Guds hus som er i Jerusalem; og siden den tid har det blitt bygget og er ennå ikke ferdig.

Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundations of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not completed.

17 Nå, derfor, hvis det behager kongen, la det bli gjort en undersøkelse i kongens skattkammer i Babylon, om det virkelig er slik at en befaling ble gitt av Kyros, kongen, om å bygge dette Guds hus i Jerusalem; og la kongen sende sin avgjørelse til oss om denne saken.

Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king's treasure-house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
