1 Ve dem som fatter urettferdige vedtak, og skriver ned ondskap;

Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and to the writers that write perverseness;

2 som avskjærer de trengende fra rettferd, og frarøver mitt folks fattige deres rett, slik at enker blir deres bytte, og de farløse blir deres rov!

to turn aside the needy from justice, and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey!

3 Hva vil dere gjøre på straffens dag, og i ødeleggelsen som kommer langveisfra? Til hvem vil dere flykte for hjelp? Og hvor vil dere etterlate deres herlighet?

And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?

4 De vil bare bøye seg under fangene og falle blant de drepte. For alt dette har hans vrede ikke vendt seg bort, men hans hånd er fortsatt utstrakt.

They shall only bow down under the prisoners, and shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

5 Ve, assyrer, min vredes stav, stokken i hans hånd er min harme!

Ho Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, the staff in whose hand is mine indignation!

6 Jeg vil sende ham mot et vanhellig folk, og mot folket som vekker min vrede vil jeg pålegge ham å ta bytte og plyndre, og trampe dem ned som leire på gatene.

I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

7 Men han tenker ikke slik, heller ikke er det hans hensikt; men det er i hans hjerte å ødelegge, og å skjære ned mange nasjoner.

Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few.

8 For han sier: Er ikke mine fyrster alle konger?

For he saith, Are not my princes all of them kings?

9 Er ikke Kalno som Karkemisj? Er ikke Hamat som Arpad? Er ikke Samaria som Damaskus?

Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?

10 Som min hånd har funnet rikene med avguder, hvor de utskårne bilder overgår dem i Jerusalem og Samaria;

As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;

11 skal jeg ikke, som jeg har gjort mot Samaria og hennes avguder, gjøre det samme med Jerusalem og hennes avguder?

shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?

12 Derfor skal det skje, når Herren har fullført hele sitt verk på Sions berg og i Jerusalem, at jeg vil straffe assyrerkongens stolte hjerte og hans hovmodige blikk.

Wherefore it shall come to pass, that, when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.

13 For han har sagt: Ved min hånds styrke har jeg gjort det, og ved min visdom; for jeg har forstand: jeg har fjernet folkets grenser, og ranet deres skatter, og som en mektig mann har jeg slått ned dem som sitter på troner.

For he hath said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding: and I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and like a valiant man I have brought down them that sit `on thrones':

14 Og min hånd har funnet folkets rikdom som et reir; og som man samler forlatte egg, har jeg samlet hele jorden: og det var ingen som flakset med vingene, eller åpnet munnen, eller pep.

and my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples; and as one gathereth eggs that are forsaken, have I gathered all the earth: and there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped.

15 Skal øksen rose seg mot den som hugger med den? Skal sagen rose seg mot den som sager med den? Som om stokken skulle føre dem som løfter den, eller som om staven skulle løfte ham som ikke er tre.

Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? shall the saw magnify itself against him that wieldeth it? as if a rod should wield them that lift it up, `or' as if a staff should lift up `him that is' not wood.

16 Derfor vil Herren, hærskarenes Gud, sende leanness blant hans fete; og under hans herlighet skal det tennes en brann som en ild.

Therefore will the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory there shall be kindled a burning like the burning of fire.

17 Israels lys skal være en ild, og hans Hellige som en flamme; og det skal brenne og fortære hans torner og tistler på en dag.

And the light of Israel will be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it will burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day.

18 Det skal ødelegge hans skogs herlighet og hans fruktbare mark, sjel og kropp; det skal være som når en fane-bærer besvimer.

And he will consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and it shall be as when a standard-bearer fainteth.

19 Resten av hans skogs trær skal bli så få, at et barn kan skrive dem.

And the remnant of the trees of his forest shall be few, so that a child may write them.

20 På den dagen skal resten av Israel og de som er unnsluppet av Jakobs hus, ikke lenger støtte seg til ham som slo dem, men skal stole på Herren, Israels Hellige, i sannhet.

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and they that are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again lean upon him that smote them, but shall lean upon Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

21 En rest skal vende tilbake, Ja, Jakobs rest, til den sterke Gud.

A remnant shall return, `even' the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.

22 For selv om ditt folk, Israel, er som havets sand, skal kun en rest av dem vende tilbake: en ødeleggelse er besluttet, fylt av rettferdighet.

For though thy people, Israel, be as the sand of the sea, `only' a remnant of them shall return: a destruction `is' determined, overflowing with righteousness.

23 For en fullstendig ende, og det som er besluttet, vil Herren, hærskarenes Gud, fullføre midt i hele jorden.

For a full end, and that determined, will the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, make in the midst of all the earth.

24 Derfor sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Mitt folk som bor i Sion, vær ikke redd for assyreren, selv om han slår deg med stokken og løfter sin stav mot deg slik som Egypt.

Therefore thus saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian, though he smite thee with the rod, and lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.

25 For om en liten stund skal vreden mot deg bli fullført, og min vrede skal vendes mot ham til ødeleggelse.

For yet a very little while, and the indignation `against thee' shall be accomplished, and mine anger `shall be directed' to his destruction.

26 Og hærskarenes Herre vil reise en svøpe mot ham, som i Midjan-slaget ved steinen Oreb: og hans stav vil være over havet, og han vil løfte den som Egypt.

And Jehovah of hosts will stir up against him a scourge, as in the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and his rod will be over the sea, and he will lift it up after the manner of Egypt.

27 Det skal skje den dagen at hans byrde skal tas bort fra din skulder, og hans åk fra din nakke, og åket skal bli ødelagt av fetme.

And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall depart from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed by reason of fatness.

28 Han har kommet til Ajat, han har passert gjennom Migron; i Mikmas har han lagt opp sin bagasje;

He is come to Aiath, he is passed through Migron; at Michmash he layeth up his baggage;

29 de har gått over passet; de har slått leir i Geba; Rama er skjelvende; Sauls Gibea har flyktet.

they are gone over the pass; they have taken up their lodging at Geba; Ramah trembleth; Gibeah of Saul is fled.

30 Rop høyt med din stemme, Gallims datter! Hør, Laisha! Stakkars Anathot!

Cry aloud with thy voice, O daughter of Gallim! hearken, O Laishah! O thou poor Anathoth!

31 Madmena er på flukt; innbyggerne i Gebim flykter.

Madmenah is a fugitive; the inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety.

32 Denne dagen skal han stanse ved Nob; han rister hånden mot Sions datters fjell, Jerusalemshøyden.

This very day shall he halt at Nob: he shaketh his hand at the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

33 Se, Herren, hærskarenes Gud, vil hogge grenene med styrke; de høye av vekst skal hogges ned, og de stolte skal bringes lavt.

Behold, the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, will lop the boughs with terror: and the high of stature shall be hewn down, and the lofty shall be brought low.

34 Han skal hugge ned skogens tette vekster med jern, og Libanon skal falle ved den mektige.

And he will cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.
